Learning Characters

Welcome to Sheuchan Primary’s Learning Characters.

At Sheuchan Primary we have been investigating how we can make children more independent and engaged in their learning process.

We believe that the more children understand what a ‘good learner’ looks like, the more they will be able to develop these characteristics for themselves. We know that as the world is changing so rapidly, children have to be able to respond confidently and creatively towards it. In order to do this, they need to have acquired the right skills and attitudes.

After a wide range of activities with the staff and children we voted on the six characteristics, or dispositions, that we thought would make the most impact on the children’s learning. They are:

  • Have A Go
  • Co-operation
  • Curiosity
  • Concentration
  • Resilience
  • Reflecting

Then to help us understand our Learning Dispositions, each characteristic was developed into an alien designed by the children in our school. These learning aliens will be an essential part of each lesson, where children will be identifying the key characteristic needed for the task and their own key areas for improvement.

HELPING AT HOME

Please do encourage your child to talk about his or her learning at home and to relate the dispositions to weekend and evening activities. Your child could be Captain Resilient when going on a long walk, or a Have-A-Go-Go when helping to make dinner!

As always, thank-you for your support with this new initiative. Please do not hesitate to speak to us if you would like more information.
