Week in the Woods – June 2013

It was great to get a really dry, sunny start to the week and parents were very surprised when we turned up almost clean at the end of the first day!

We had planned den building and camp fire cooking skills – building on the skills learned last session but we also wanted pupils to transfer skills from the classroom into the woods so we planned maths, art and drama activities too.

We used different tools to cause vibrations to coax worms out of the ground – Scott’s group won with a worm 20cm in length.

Tuesday was all about trees and pupils had to calculate the area of leaves with the seniors also working out the average area of leaves on a tree. We took rubbings and observation drawings of the leaves both in the playground and in the woodland.

In the afternoon we went to the outdoor classroom in the woodland and pupils created faces on the trees using mud and found objects from the woods. Some pupils chose to create scary monster faces. Working with mud was great fun!

Wednesday was all about mini beasts and pupils went on a bug hunt, classified bugs and observed and drew mini beasts. Staff were impressed at the confidence of pupils – no one was nervous about studying mini beasts.

Week In The Woods

Dens:
We went up the woods to collect some sticks. We used the sticks to make dens in the playground. We got to make our own groups and we stuck with the groups we had for the rest of the Week.

Trees and Leaves:
We learned in how to measure trees by looking underneath our legs. To figure out the Age you hug it.

Mini Beasts:
We looked at lot of different mini beast like:
Spider
Ground Beetles
Slugs and lots more

Camp fires:
On Thursday we had a topic about campfires. We made a chocolate banana, Toasted marshmallows and made fish. We ate EVERYTHING. My opinion was that it is awesome.

Thank you, for every one who took part even parents.

Wallace Hall Academy

On the 25th of June the P7s went up to Wallace Hall Academy for their Induction days. It lasted for three days. I was extremely worried about getting lost or getting bullied. As I walked through the gate I saw loads of people playing football and joking around, it was awesome. We got taken in to the dance studio and put in to our house teams. I was in Carne. Then we got taken to our registration classes, my registration teacher was Mr Rae, then we got shown around the school. After a while I didn’t seem that bad but we had buddies to show us around. Then came the last day I was so sad but I couldn’t wait to come after the summer. On the last day we had to find our own way round the school, it was kind of hard but I just followed the others in my class. When it was time for geography everyone had got to class however I had to find my own way because I couldn’t find anyone. Unfortunately I got lost and was just walking down the corridor and this boy from an older year asked me if I was lost and I told him were I had to go and he pointed it out to me.
My favourite thing about high school is the bus, it was awesome and the fact you have loads of different classes!

Wallace Hall Academy

On the 25th of June the p7s induction days started at Wallace Hall Academy. It went on for 3 days. We went up to have a look at what things we will be doing, when we go up after the summer holidays. We got to find out what class we were in for the whole of S1. We did lots of subjects which we will also be doing for the rest of high school. It was like a typical day at Wallace hall, so we could see what it would be like when we go up for real. My favourite subjects were math, H.E and P.E. When I walked into the school I was very nervous and scared, but there was lots of teachers and pupils to help you round. It was a lot of fun and I cant wait to go after the summer holidays, but I will miss Holywood Primary. A list of subjects we did: Maths, P.E, H.E, Geography, ICT, RE, English, Art, and Q.I. I have made lots of friends and I know a lot of people there that helped me around. I am very surprised that I did not get lost on my way to class. The bus was very scary on the first day I went.

Den building (week in the woods)

On Monday we started to bulid our dens for the week in the woods. We picked groups. I had Ryan,Lewis M and Scott. After we choose our group we went to the woods to collect the sticks. I brought some sticks up to our den and I put them on. Then I saw Ryan behind the hills when I got there. Ryan had a plan to get more sticks quickly. He asked me to get up on the hill and he chucked all the sticks over the fence and I collected them and put them down next to our den.
