Calside Superstars

Despite the ongoing Covid restrictions, our children have continued to be very Busy Bees. There has been lots of great learning going on in class: please remember that you can see what we have been up to on our Class Teams.  An overview of this term’s learning is always available on the Class Team so you know what your child is learning, and you can then support at home. Homework can also be found on Teams: there are a few impending deadlines for Topic Homework so you may wish to look at these with your child over the February break. You may also want to visit a castle, a battle site or a museum such as the Devil’s Porridge.

Scots Poetry Festival
A huge well done to all those children who learned their poems: we know it isn’t easy, and some of the poems are very tricky! We had a very enjoyable week listening to them all. The winners’ performances can be found on Teams for you to view. The winners were:

P1: Sophie Adamson, Hannah Hogg, Ollie Service and Eden Windsor
P1/2: Ethan Bruce, Adam McIntosh and Lewis Weir
P2: Natalie Little, Olivia Loughran and Roddy MacBeth
P3: Daniel Gray, Alice Kirkpatrick and David Rogerson
P4: Olly Bisset, Archie Hamilton and Olivia Rice
P5: Harris Cunliffe, Sophie Little, Ruairidh Tennant
P6: Josie Borland and Harry Service
P6/7: Megan Borland, Isaac Ishmael and Callum McCaulay
P7: Adam McNay

Burns Supper
P6 and P7 held their Burns Supper within their bubble: some excellent toasts and speeches. Special mentions go to Summer Anderson, Megan Borland, Joe Burnie, Natalie Little, Archie McHattie, Malachi Samuels and Harry Service.

Teams
We continue to use Teams as the main class noticeboard, and we share class messages on these as well as our learning activities. We are very conscious that you have not been able to be in school to celebrate the learning with us, and so we try to share as much as we can. If you have any suggestions for items you would like to see on Teams, we would love to hear them.

Wider Achievements
All the activities that the children get up to both in and out of school are a huge part of their achievements and progress along their learning journey. They develop vital skills at clubs or at home such as teamwork, following instructions or having a go at something they are nervous about. Please remember to let us know about these achievements via Teams or email: your child’s interests and strengths make them who they are. Some of the wider achievements so far this term can be found in the February newsletter.

Safer Internet Day 8th February

On Tuesday 8th February we will be joining schools across the UK in marking Safer Internet Day 2022. Safer Internet Day is a global campaign to promote the safe and responsible use of technology; which calls on young people, parents, carers, teachers and the wider community to join together in helping to create a better Internet.

Using the Internet safely and positively is a key message that we promote in Calside Primary, and celebrating Safer Internet Day is a great opportunity for us to re-emphasise the online safety messages we deliver throughout the year. Children across the school will be working on different activities in class, so make sure you check out your child’s Team page to see what they have been up to.

We would be delighted if you could join us in celebrating the day by continuing the conversation at home. To help you with this, you may be interested in downloading the free Safer Internet Day Resources for Parents and Carers which is available at: saferinternet.org.uk/sid-parents.

There are top tips, quizzes, and films which you can use at home with your child. Some other resources which you may find helpful in supporting your child online are:

● Tips, advice and guides for parents and carers from the UK Safer Internet Centre (saferinternet.org.uk/parents)

● Advice for parents and carers from Childnet (childnet.com/parents-and-carers)

● Reviews and information about games, apps, TV shows and websites from Common Sense Media (commonsense.org)

● Help on using parental controls and privacy settings from Internet Matters (internetmatters.org./controls)

● Information and reporting of online grooming or sexual abuse from CEOP (ceop.police.uk)

Online safety is an important issue which we are committed to, as a school. Your support makes such a difference in keeping the children safe on the Internet or social media.

If you have any concerns or questions about keeping your child safe online, please do get in touch with your child’s class teacher.

Headteacher Christmas Challenge 3

A great morning of Christmas challenges today: today’s Headteacher challenge was to make a reindeer obstacle course. Check them out on Teams: some are totally hilarious.

Special mention to P6/7 who did not create an obstacle course, but instead did reindeer training: resulting in some very tired reindeer, a very bemused passer-by and a Headteacher in stitches. A second special mention to P5 who made their obstacle course as an engineering lesson complete with model sleigh to fly it.

The winners today are P1 and P7.

On behalf of all the children and staff, may we wish you a joyous Christmas season.

Headteacher Christmas Challenge 2

Today’s class Christmas challenge was to make a gingerbread house: some were absolutely amazing! See their efforts on Teams.

The winners were P1/2 whose house was so big that they could all get in it; P4 who presented a stunning house; and P6/7 for their sense of humour with a house made of bread painted ginger……

Watch out for tomorrow’s challenge!

Fun, decorated gingerbread house for the holidays. Editable vector file.

Christmas Hamper Raffle

The draws for the Christmas hampers can be found on the Class Teams. Winners will be notified by phone call, and are asked to collect their winning hamper from the school office tomorrow. We can’t send them home with the children due to their size and due to some of the contents!

Thank you all for your support: the Pupil Council are delighted with their success. A huge thankyou to Miss Brown and Mrs Findlater for organising and making the hampers; and to Mrs Copeland for her assistance with the draws.

Children In Need At Calside 2021

Here at Calside primary we all had a blast as everyone got to come to school in non-uniform. We all brought a donation of up to £1 and together raised £456.12 for children in need. The majority of us made Pudsey eye patches and had a competition where the best eye patch won a prize. Here are the two winners:

National Anti-Bullying Week

This week has been National Anti-Bullying Week: the children have been exploring issues related to bullying in class, in particular what they themselves can do to reduce incidents and respond appropriately to any issues.
The Pupil Council has also revisited the policy and procedures. This can be located on the school website under the Positive Behaviour tab. The children have made leaflets, games and videos in class, and you can see some of their work on their Class Team. You can also see two examples below.
