Paired Reading

Extra support with literacy is offered through involvement in our Paired Reading Programme. The programme runs on Monday and Tuesday mornings  during registration time, although timings may vary in the new school session. Students are invited to join and seek permission from parent / carer before involvement.

All young learners involved are supported by a sixth year student who has been trained to offer help and encouragement. The programme makes use of Accelerated Reading materials which involves learners reading a book at a level suited to their ability. A sixth year student works with each young person to offer encouragement and support with her / his reading. On completion of a book, a quiz is completed before a new text is chosen.

Although the sessions run during registration, many learners attend as soon as they arrive in school. The atmosphere is relatively informal and a sound network of both social and academic support is built up.

Many of the students involved enjoy the experience, building new friendships and gaining confidence in themselves and in their reading.
