Literacy Groups
The Literacy Groups are small groups of about 5 or 6 pupils who require support in all aspects of literacy. The groups meet with the teacher for 3 periods a week in a separate location from the main class – the library or another classroom. The sessions are intended to be quite intense focussing on aspects of literacy that a pupil is currently having difficulty with.
We cover aspects of literacy such as:
Spelling – spelling rules, a deeper understanding of how to spell and where to look both in online dictionaries and specialist dictionaries.
Reading Comprehension – differentiated comprehensions with questions to help pupils learn how to read a passage and look for information, to take meaning from it and to predict what happens next. This teaches them to think outside the box and look at the bigger picture when reading.
Listening – listening to short passages and answering questions – this teaches pupils to pick out important information.
Talking – pupils take part in fun activites such as charades, reciting riddles, tongue twisters and reading aloud to each other and in front of the group to build confidence in speaking and to raise self esteem.
Technology – text to speech and speech to text.
Reading – the pupils spend time reading personal novels or other texts such as short stories, magazines, newspapers or factual pieces depending on their preferences, but we do encourage a wide range of genres.
Memory – building skills to help commit knowledge to short and long term memory using fun games.
The benefits from attending these sessions are:
– Build confidence
– Build self esteem
– Meet people who have similar difficulties with literacy
– Peer support
– More personalised approach
– Build skills for life – reading, listening, talking, writing
– Health and Wellbeing
