Literacy Software Overview
The IDL Literacy Intervention is a speaking-computer based multi-sensory system which supports learners with dyslexia and other learning difficulties to increase their reading and spelling ages. The programme was specifically designed for those with dyslexia and is used as an intervention but can also be used effectively as a school wide literacy solution.
Over the last 40 years numerous research studies have shown that IDL Literacy is a proven solution for increasing the reading and spelling ability of pupils with dyslexia and other learning difficulties by an average of 11 months after just 26 hours of use.
It is developed around five basic principles:
Multi Sensory Lessons
IDL uses sight, sound, touch, and voice to improve literacy and mathematical ability. Links are made between the visual, auditory and tactile pathways. |
Progress Monitoring
Teachers can easily see how pupils are achieving against expected standards for their age group along with identifying areas they are struggling with most. |
Simple To Use
IDL has been simply designed to make it easy for pupils and teachers to use. Pupils are able to work independently or with minimum supervision, whilst teachers can track and monitor progress effortlessly. |
Independent Learning
Pupils are able to work independently on the programme, allowing for larger intervention groups. |
Available Anywhere
Pupils can use IDL from school or at home, on a computer or tablet. The cloud is used to store pupil progress so they can pick up where they left off. |

Numeracy Software Overview
IDL Numeracy is a maths software resource that helps to improve ability for low-attaining learners in mathematics. In order to be inclusive, the lessons in IDL are designed to reduce the stress those with dyscalculia would ordinarily feel when faced with mathematical problems. After a few hours using IDL, learners will find a familiarity with the lessons and because the lesson mechanics remain the same, they gain the confidence they need to tackle problems, even those they have never encountered before.
Mathematical principles:
Each lesson is made up of one or more of these main mathematical principles.
Number bonds are simple mathematical sums, which should become so familiar that a pupil can recognise them and complete them almost instantly. |
Within a series of lessons simple counting strategies are introduced. You will see your pupils counting numbers, apples, carrots, money and much more. |
The ability to put things into the correct order, usually based on the size, number or value. Lessons will see pupils organising all kinds of things from ducks to trains. |
Patterns cover an array of topics from 2d and 3d shapes to spatial awareness and time. |
This relates to the value of a given number in terms of quantity or size. Those with Dyscalculia find it very difficult to visualise a number in these terms. |
The ability to understand the value of a number based on its position in terms of ‘ones’, ‘tens’ and ‘hundreds’. |
IDL Numeracy lessons are interspersed with increasingly difficult sums. These provide a marker for overall progress. |
