Puffins in Scotland – Amazing Fauna

Hello Boys and Girls!

Today we are going to learn about a breed of birds that gather every spring and summer in the coasts of Scotland, Puffins. They nest in cliffs at scattered locations around the coast of Scotland, northern England, south-west England and Wales. They are a very special type of birds that live in the sea most of their lives and only go to land for breeding. Here in Scotland are several viewpoints to see them, one of them is at the RSPB Scotland Fowlsheugh Nature Reserve. Last year I decided to go and see them, it was an amazing experience! It took me a while to spot them because they  were not the only birds there and they are very small.

Let’s learn more about them.

Puffins’ Features

Read the questions below and look at the Puffin picture.

  1. What colour are its feathers?
  2. What colour are its wings?
  3. What colour and shape are its claws?

Making a Puffin

Now that you know more about Puffins, that you have seen photos and videos of them, let’s make one.

Materials

You will use any materials you have at home like colour pencils, colour paints, markers or anything you can find. Here are two options of what you can do:

  1. You learnt about some artists during our Art fortnight, you can choose a style and make a Puffin.
  2. By using cardboard from shoe boxes or cereals you can make a real life size Puffin. If you researched the information you will know they are from 26 to 29 cm.

Steps

  1. Choose one of the options from above.
  2. Find the materials you need.
  3. Design your own Puffin.
  4. Send a photo of your work to your teachers and add what you learnt to your learning journal.

Mild Numeracy – Giving Change

Mental Maths warm up!

Keep practising counting in 2s, 5s and 10s to help you count amounts of money quickly.

Many of you have set up your own shops at home.

Your customers might not bring the exact amount of money so you need to learn to give them change.

Warm up – Take away facts!

Make a flag

As part of the Scotland/Social subjects grid we have set the task of making a flag.

Think about what you already know about flags.

Why do we have them?

What do they have in common?

What do they represent?

Why are they so different? or why are some similar? Here are two sets that are very similar.

Flags often have special meaning. The colours and shapes are not random. They often have a specific theme or idea connected to them. Some flags have mythical creatures or stories connected to them. Each flag is different and individual to the cause or Country it stands for.

The Welsh flag is a good example.

Your task is to make a flag that represents you.

Think about the colours you want to use, will you add a connection to family or friends? Will you add in something connected to a hobby or sport you enjoy? Will you include anything special to you? or will your flag be something totally different? It’s up to you.

Here is one I made with my Home School pupil. Pink and purple are her favourite colours and her hobby is dancing. She also added four hearts to represent the members of our family. For our flag we used fabric and glued on the pieces but you can use pen and paper or anything you have access to at at home. Don’t forget to share it with your teacher.

Well-Being Wednesday: Mr.Mutch vs Mr.Reid #9 Scavenger Race

The gents are back… back to school!

Yes, teachers have been able to go back into school to prepare for when we all return. Mr.Mutch and Mr.Reid actually saw each other, without the Green Screen.

When they took a break they realised they didn’t have much to do. As most places were closed or that we had been told to avoid. So after a short discussion the teachers had an idea.

Tune in and enjoy this weeks episode of…

Mr.Mutch vs Mr.Reid

Who is ready for a Scavenger Race?

Your challenge this week is to go on a race following clues around Methlick. You start when you find the location of your first clue. Start the timer when you set off to find clue two.

Remember to take a selfie with the card at the final destination and send it in to your teacher. We will create a video of everyone taking part and send it out next week.

Where will you place on the Leader board?

MILD: Literacy – My Favourite Spot

This fortnight is all about celebrating Scotland and our Local Area.

We all love Methlick and there are many places to love Methlick. But each of us will have that one special spot. Somewhere that could have a great view or it could be somewhere that you visit regularly or somewhere that brings back memories.

In our writing we want to make a Mild guide of places to visit in Methlick, as described by you.

Follow the Sway below to learn more…

There is a PDF attached underneath which you can print or refer to in your writing. One side is for taking notes and planning and the other is for the your final writing piece…

Compare the Supermarkets – Spicy/Hot

Today’s maths challenge is related to our ‘Money’ theme.  You will be given a shopping list and challenged to find the best value online supermarket.

A minimum of 2 supermarkets should be selected, however if you wish a slightly HOTTER challenge you can, of course, choose more.

Instructions and a shopping list are contained in the Sway.

Ensure that you stick to the guidelines, and keep an eye open at all times for any special offers, such as ‘3 for 2’ or  ‘Buy-One-Get-One-Free’ as these offer good value for money.

Remember to post your results on Seesaw or write them in your jotter, and come back to the Blog to tell us how you got on!

Scots, Spanish & French – Languages

 Bonjour! Hola!

I hope you are enjoying your new topic for this week boys and girls. Since I moved in to Scotland I have loved everything about it, specially its language. That’s why with Ms Rees we thought it would be so fun to mix all languages and give you a try matching words to their language.

Here is a word document that will allow you to see the words you will be looking up, once you find the meaning in Scots, Spanish and French you put them in the column where they belong.

Vocabulary Chart

Activity

In this Sway you will have one slide for each language with the words mixed up, try and find to which language they belong. Below the Sway you will find 3 links to dictionaries that could help you.

Let’s Begin.
