Don’t Say ‘Said’!

Good morning, everyone!

Welcome back to the Blog.  It seems very strange not to be taking in the lines as usual on the first day of term.  I also miss hearing your holiday news, but you can leave a message here or on Seesaw to let me know what you’ve been up to (or write it in your journal).

Anyway, I hope you had a lovely break enjoying the sunshine over the holidays and are all ready for some more learning activities in Term 4.

To kick-start the term, I have a Literacy challenge for you.  You may already have seen that one of the reading tasks in this week’s Spicy Literacy Grid involves finding different words in your reading book that the author uses instead of ‘said’.

Click on my Sway to find out more …

P.S.   House points will be awarded to the pupil with the highest total (I will have to verify this once we’re back at school)!

P.P.S. Maybe some of the teachers/parents would like to have a go at this as well?

Easter Word Challenge

Here’s another Easter Literacy challenge for everyone.  How many words you can make from ‘HAPPY EASTER’?

Read the instructions in the Sway below, and challenge other family members to take part.  I’d recommend doing this over a number of days so that you can keep adding to your total.

Don’t forget to write the list of words in your Learning Journals, and leave a comment for me here, to let me know how many you have managed to find.   I’m going to give it a go and I challenge all the teachers and Mrs Fraser to take part as well!

There are different rules for Mild, Spicy and Hot, so click on the Sway to find out more.

Literacy: Pobble: Hot

I love creative writing, especially when I have to think of a story with very little to go off of. It could be a picture, a video, a song that could be the inspiration for a story and from there you can build the world of your story to be anything.

I was really intrigued to give the Pobble HOT challenge a go, it was going to be my first HOT Challenge and I was really excited to try it. I felt much more confident after following Miss Deans Sway the other day on how to help build my story. She gave me tips and different things that I could consider to help make my piece of writing better.

On the website link there were lots of things to do relating to the picture so I decided to give them all a go and hopefully they would help me to create my story.

Here is a PDF link to my finished story, it can also be found at the end of my sway.

Pobble About to Hatch Story Starter

This is a great little project that can be completed over a longer period of time and it has all been created from one picture! How have you all got on with your Pobbles?

Play Sumdog with Mr Reid and Miss Deans – Spicy/Hot – Numeracy – Week 2

Good morning everyone

If your child has a Sumdog account, they will be able to play with Mr Reid and Miss Deans between 12pm – 1pm today.

Mr Reid will be playing – Street Racer

Miss Deans will be playing – Dance

Each game will start on a 5 minute interval, meaning that the first game will start at 12pm, then 12.05pm, 12.10pm etc.

When selecting ‘Who do you want to play against?’ – Select ‘Class’.

We have added every teacher to each class, so we should all be able to play together!

We look forward to playing Sumdog with you all.

Egg Box Volume – Numeracy – Hot

Hello everyone,

Have you had a go at the ‘Hot’ Numeracy Challenge – Egg Box Volume?

The task was to  create a net for an easter egg that is 20 cm high and 8cm wide. The net must have a window shape cut into the front to view the egg through.

Here are some simple and straight forward instructions to help you with this task.

1. Create a net for a 3D Cuboid – If you do not have paper big enough to match the dimensions, feel free to alter the measurements. Use a search engine to help with the drawing of your net.

2. Decorate the net of your Cuboid using Easter images – for example, eggs, Easter Bunny or chicks.

3. Carefully cut out an egg shaped-hole in one of the rectangles.

4. Cut out the Cuboid Net and assemble your Easter box!

If you managed to complete this activity, please share your finished product with your class teacher – through Seesaw or email.

Literacy Pobble Story Starter Support with Miss Deans

Hello Everyone 🙂

Hope you all had a nice weekend and are ready for another week of learning.

My blog post today is on our Story Starter task, again I am aware many of you may have already done this but I would encourage you to go through this powerpoint, you could maybe self assess your piece of writing or edit and redraft as this is also a very important skill within your writing that will create depth and progression 🙂

Remember you can send your stories to your individual teacher through their email/ send the link of sway via private message on seesaw.

Word of the Week (Hot)

Hello everyone.  I hope you all had a lovely weekend and are going to try out some more of the grid activities this week.

Before the school closed, P4 were keen to have a ‘Word of the Week’, challenge.  I thought some of the other classes might like to give it a go too, so here it is.

Click on the Sway to find out what to do.

I wonder if anyone in P6/5 can remember what this week’s word means?  🙂

Hello everyone!

It’s time to practise our Times Tables.

Please comment and let us know which times tables you have been practising and which activity you are enjoying the most!

New – Outdoor Learning Grid 1

Hopeful for some spring sunshine and warmth we thought you might like to explore the challenges on Outdoor Learning Grid 1 to learn about worms, create a nest and investigate the rainbow spectrum of colours.

Outdoor Learning Grid 1

Capture your learning in your journal or sway and leave a COMMENT to let us know what you have been learning to do. Help everyone to feel connected and that we are learning together.

Mild challenge

Spicy challenge

Hot challenge

When you come back indoors:

Mild challengers might like to sit and listen to ‘Superworm’ by Julia Donaldson. Worms are superheroes in our gardens. Can you find out why?

Spicy challengers might like to sit and listen to ‘Yucky Worms’ by Vivian French. You could turn the sound off and read the book independently by pausing the clip at the right time for you. List the facts you learn from the story in your journal or sway.

Hot challengers, older children might like to watch the Springwatch documentary about earthworms which includes information about their importance, varieties. predators, how they reproduce and how to investigate them.  Creating a mindmap would help you to summarise the main points in your learning journal or sway.

Haiku Challenge – Grid 1 – Hot!

Today I thought I’d attempt a HOT challenge from the Literacy grid, as I know a few of you have done this already.

With poetry, remember that ‘less is more’,  so choose your words carefully and remember to paint a picture in the reader’s mind.

Drifting slowly down
Like pink confetti falling –
Cherry blossom tree.

Trees scrape the night sky,
Bare branches clutching at stars.
The storm is coming.

And now a silly one  –

Stretching and yawning,
The world’s laziest cat wakes –
“Time for my tea, Mum!”

Hope you’ll have a go too! 🙂
