Information for Parents

In celebration of Ellon Primary School’s Golden Jubilee, staff and pupils invite you to join them in a magical history tour of the 60s finishing with a celebratory tea in the Gordon Park.
Classes have been studying a wide range or topics from space voyaging to playground games, agricultural shows to protest movements, from yellow submarine to oil exploration, via the excitement and colour of 60’s music, fashion and popular culture, each class has been working hard to prepare a scene inspired by the memorable moments and movements from the 1960s.
The tour will start at the front steps leading into the playground from 3.15pm onwards.
At Gordon Park marquees will be set up and the children will gather together after the tour with the audience to sing ‘Happy Birthday’ and be treated to juice and birthday cake.

Ellon Primary Golden Jubilee Planning Group Update  23rd March 2012

As you know this year we celebrate our 50th birthday. Yes, it’s our Golden Jubilee Year and the planning group, consisting of parents, staff and our Pupil Learning Council have got some fantastic ideas on how we can celebrate this important landmark.

This update will give you an outline of the exciting events we are planning for children, parents and the local community.

Our Pupil Learning Council has been busy writing to local businesses for sponsorship. They also ran a competition within the school to redesign the school logo for the jubilee year and have selected the winning entries. Aspects of three designs have been chosen and combined into one winning design. We will be announcing the winners this coming Wednesday and you will be able to see the design for our Jubilee logo next week on our school blog.

Limited edition polo shirts and tee shirts will be produced with the Jubilee logo. These will go on sale in term 4. The design will also be printed onto Golden Jubilee mugs, pens and other goods.

The children are getting lots of ideas by keeping a close eye on what is being planned for Queen Elizabeth’s Diamond Jubilee.

Through looking at the traditions of Jubilee celebrations we decided to look into the possibility of having a Jubilee Parade involving all the children which would culminate in a big Tea Party.

Our creative teaching team came up with the idea of centring our learning outcomes next term on the 1960s. We wanted to add an element of excitement and began to look at involving creative arts companies. Theatre Modo were recommended to us by schools and groups in the area who have worked with the company to organise successful community events in and around the north east of Scotland.

We met with Martin Danzinger, the creative director of Modo and invited him in to work with two of our classes. They had a fantastic experience learning circus skills.

Since then Martin has been planning with the teaching staff and has come up with the following exciting ideas for studying aspects of the 1960s.

Nursery

Will investigate tie dye techniques to create patterns on fabric.

P1 – Flower Children

P1’s will be celebrating the colours, flowers, nature and joy of the ‘flower children’ by studying flowers and gardens.

They will be creating flower ‘deely boppers’, floral bandanas, tie die or flower design t-shirts and performing flower dance routines

P2, P2/3 – The Beatles

Using the songs Yellow Submarine and Octopus Garden as starting points, children will develop routines and costume ideas for underwater worlds. They will be researching underwater creatures, submarines and crew.

P3 – Going to the Moon

Primary 3 will bring to life the wonder and the achievements of men landing on the moon. They will be researching: the space race, how rockets work, the moon, zero gravity and space walking.

Creative aspects will include making a giant moon and space hats.

P4 – The class of 62

Primary 4 children will be going back in time to recreate the 1st class to be in the school and the games, rhymes and chants they played.

Research will be around old games, chants and rhymes, uniform and school life in the 60s.

P4/5 The discovery of oil in the North Sea

P4/5 will explore and celebrate the technology and discoveries that the discovery of oil in the north east has allowed. Research will include the process of drilling for oil, where oil comes from and how it was made.  They will also look at drilling platforms/equipment, what oil/gas allow us to do.

P5 Ellon Agricultural Parade in the 60s

Children in P5 will research agriculture in 60s, farm animals, farm implements/machines and visits to farming museums.

Children will be involved in making animal heads, drama and movement on the theme of machines.

P6 Civil Rights Movement

The focus for our P6 class will be on protest movements in the 60s, and in particular the anti Polaris demonstrations.

They will research the history of CND, banners, slogans and chants.

They will also be studying the music of protest, Bob Dylan, Joan Baez and Scottish folk music.

P6/7 Music/Album Covers

Taking iconic album covers as a starting point, the children will create images and routines to bring to life the covers.

They will look at images of covers, montage/collage forms of art, shadow/rod puppetry.

Album covers chosen will relate to the music or inspiration behind other classes work themes.

P7  Art in the 1960s

Loking at the work of Andy Warhol, the class will create flags and routines based on his art and performance art.

They will research his art, and research the notion of icon. They will be studying contemporary icons.

The work created by all the classes will culminate in a Golden Jubilee Parade with music, art and drama combined into a visual spectacle for all to enjoy and remember. It will end with a 60’s themed Tea Party for the children and the community. This will take place on the afternoon of Friday 15th June.

To support the activities outlined the group have been busy applying to various public funding bodies for funds and so far have secured almost £3,000. We are awaiting the outcome of applications from Awards for All, Make a Splash and from a number of companies who have expressed an interest in sponsoring aspects of the Jubilee event.

We look forward to creating rich learning experiences for the children during term four. We aim to excite and motivate all our learners.

The Jubilee planning group are also planning the following events for children and adults:

15th June        Golden Jubilee 60’s Parade and Tea Party

22nd June       Golden Jubilee disco for the children

23rd June        A 1960’s themed dance for adults in the school community to a live 60’s band in the Victoria Hall.

We hope that as many parents and friends of the school as possible will support the activities and events planned.

We would like to say a huge thank you to local companies and people who have made private donations to the school to enable us to go ahead with what will be a memorable event for children, families and our community.
