The morning children have shown a strong interest in numbers recently. They have enjoyed exploring the new number resources in the construction area. They are beginning to use numberlines, rulers, calculators and number stones in stand alone play scenarios. We hope to develop this by helping the children see how they can use these resources to extend their play in all contexts.

Beetleland!
We (encouraged by Finlay) have renamed our stone pit ‘Beetleland’ after finding several beetles today. We looked under stones and logs to find beetles, worms, spiders and ants. The ground was very dry so we decided to add some water to make it wet. We found out that some minibeasts like wet ground better. We had great fun using our senses to observe the minibeasts that we had found.
Our Assault Courses
We have been busy creating our own assault courses in both the morning and afternoon classes. We have been developing our skills in checking our assault courses are safe and have been talking to each other to share ideas. We have also been experimenting with how we can use our arm and leg movements to increase the distance we can jump off our assault courses. We hope to build on this in the coming days and weeks.

Our first full nursery session
We have all had a wonderful first full session at nursery. We enjoyed having snack and are becoming increasingly familiar with the routine of getting ready for snack or our door play. We are all making new friends and the returning children have been wonderful at being welcoming and kind. Here is a selection of photos of us from today.
Den building
Next time you are in the garden make sure you have a look at the fantastic dens some of the afternoon boys have been working on over the last few days. They have been using sticks, rope and hammers to build their den. They made a fire using stones and kept themselves safe by wearing high vis vests and helmets.
They worked hard as team and had to solve problems and persevere when the den kept collapsing. Well done boys!
We plan to build on this indoors using natural materials in our construction area.
New children
Please ensure all nursery forms have been returned to the school office or to nursery staff. We are unable to share nursery photographs of all children on the blog before these forms are returned to us. We have some fantastic photos of wonderful learning experiences that we would love to share with you. 😀
Resource request
We are looking for new stones or rocks for our stone pit in nursery. We use them for building, balancing, counting and for extending our imaginative play. Natural resources like stones are also a fantastic resource for open ended play experiences that require higher order thinking. For more information on the use of natural materials in early years settings please click here.
Please could all children try to bring at least one stone or rock to nursery as soon as possible. We are looking for stones or rocks in a variety of sizes. Many thanks.
Water Experiments
Over the past week the afternoon boys have been very interested in exploring pouring, floating and sinking in the water tray. They especially enjoyed using the water pipes to make water flow. Today they used new nursery toys to extend this further. The new toys are quite similar to marble run and can be constructed in different ways to make pipes that flow in different directions.
The boys also enjoyed making different sounds using the pipes like trumpets. More photos to follow…
Possible home extension: provide jugs, pipes and cups for supervised bath time fun.
