This week we have been using google to search for images of things that we are interested in. Cars, rockets and space have been the most popular areas to search for. You can try this at home too. I would recommend checking all images before allowing your children to view them.

Making Pizzas
Floating and sinking
We continue to be very interested in water. This week we have been developing our skills in carrying out simple experiments to determine whether an object floats or sinks. We then tried to sort our objects into the correct floating or sinking baskets – this is a key numeracy skill we are developing.
We are going to build on this next week by trying to build our own boats.
Forest Fun
We had great fun in the forest this week. We all followed new forest rules to help keep ourselves safe and enjoyed exploring a new environment that was different from nursery. Particular areas of interest was: bug hunting, den building, tree climbing and mud!
We are still looking for helpers for all nursery sessions next week. Please let us know a.s.a.p. if you are able to help.
Transport – looking for signs
Some of us went on a walk with Mrs Ogilvie this week to find different signs around the playground and school perimeter. We hope to develop this with other children too. You can extend this at home by encouraging your child to look for signs when out and about. They may wish to find certain letters from their name, numbers that they know on the signs or to try guessing what the sign might mean.
Transport – exploring forces
Many of us are very interested in different forces. We have been exploring this in our water topic and are now exploring this in our transport topic.
These boys had great fun creating slides for the toy cars. They worked collaboratively and discovered the steeper the slope the faster the car will go. you can see how we plan to address this new interest in our planning folder.
Transport – painting with wheels
We have started a transport mini topic this week. Our water/space mini topics are continuing too!
This week Stanley suggested we should paint using different types of trucks and cars. This was great fun and we all enjoyed experimenting with the different patterns different wheels created. You can see this on our transport wall near the construction area inside the nursery classroom. We have also been sharing books about transport and working hard to complete transport themed puzzles.
Forest Sessions – Reminder
Forest sessions
A reminder that the green and yellow children will be visiting the forest on Tuesday 20th and 27th September. Red and blue children will be visiting the forest on Wednesday 21st and 28th September.
Please ensure your child has the following items with them for the forest:
- A warm waterproof jacket
- A cosy fleece or jumper
- Waterproof trousers (not essential but recommended)
- Sturdy footwear – preferably not wellies unless it is very wet
- A small rucksack containing:
- A filled water bottle – no juice please
- Hats and gloves
Outdoor fun this week
We have had very busy outdoor week this week. Following on from our interest in building last week we started using real tools this week. We have been carefully using hammers and nails to ‘fix’ items in the garden. Many of the children have requested that we get more tools and we are currently looking into this.
You could extend this at home by getting your child to help you fix items around the house.
Please note: as we are now uploading observations onto your child’s personal profile (Interactive learning diary) we will be doing slightly less blog updates. Please see your child’s tray for your login for the Interactive learning diary. Returning parents: your log ins from last year should still work. Please let me know if they don’t.
Website of the week
We have been creating our own aliens using the ‘Website of the week’ this week. Please click here to access it.
