As part of their topic ‘Going For Gold’, P4/5 in Port Ellen Primary School organised a ‘wonderful world of work’ event to help them to develop their knowledge of different jobs. The children brainstormed people in the community who they thought had interesting jobs and sent out invitations. They were delighted when eighteen people from a wide variety of working backgrounds agreed to come along.
Everyone worked hard preparing for the event by developing interesting questions to ask, making response sheets, name cards and even baking some treats for afterwards.
The hall was set up to allow our guests to sit at tables which were spaced out around the room. The children had three minutes to question each person about their job and record their response before moving on to the next person.
The hall was buzzing with enthusiasm as all the children engaged in discussion about different careers like being a doctor, photographer, editor, fireman, vet, electrician, jockey and hotel manager to name but a few.
The following day, the children worked together to collate all their findings and used this to create a class book about careers.
All the children thoroughly enjoyed this experience and all agreed that they had really developed their knowledge of the world of work as a result of it.
We would like to give a massive thank you to all the people who came along and made this happen. We hope you enjoyed the afternoon as much as we did.
