On Thursday 21st March students from S1 and S2 took part in the BBC’s School Report, making two news reports. One group made and completed a report on the importance of our ferries to everyday life on Mull. They had already been to Craignure and interviewed some of the staff at the port and some of the crew of the Isle of Mull including the Captain. They managed to meet the 2.00 editing deadline so that their report could go live on News Day.
The second group looked at the arts on Mull and were out and about to interview some of those involved including the Artistic Directors of Mull Theatre and An Tobar. On Thursday morning they went to visit the Screen Machine and filmed its transformation into a cinema as well as interviewing the senior driver. Back in school technology was against the group so they were unable to edit the film together but did manage to get their interviews online.
During the morning three pupils were interviewed live on BBC Radio, a somewhat surreal experience as the interview was done by phone and they were unsure as to whom they were speaking to and who was actually listening!
Overall this was a valuable experience, a steep learning curve for all but one which we would hope to do again next year.
