On, Wednesday, 26 September 2012, half of Dunoon Grammar School’s S4 pupils attended Industrial Awareness Day, held at the local hostel – with the other half going on, Tuesday, 2 October 2012. The day is held in order to raise awareness of what goes on in business and to educate pupils of the day to day occurrences in some businesses. It is also to show S4 pupils what the business world is like and allows them to work with people from outwith the school. The day is always a success because of the fact pupils are put into groups and therefore working together and meeting new people. The tasks that they have to complete are all business related, this making them use other skills that are not normally used in a classroom environment.
Mrs Landsburgh, the member of staff responsible for the event, said:
“There is a huge educational benefit to this day, as it allows pupils to demonstrate skills of working with others. It allows them to use their initiative and for them to think creatively, and lets the pupils use skills which are needed in the world of work.”
Two S4 pupils, Keir and Teddy, both said this about their day taking part in Industrial Awareness:
“We enjoyed the day very much; it was a character building and useful event. The day taught us a lot about business and talking to successful business people inspired us to do our best.”
Mr Shaw, Head Teacher added,
“I would like to thank Mrs Landsburgh, Miss McTaggart, the staff at the hostel and all the members of our local community who gave up their time to attend and contribute to both events. Our pupils have again gained a great insight into the world of business and I am confident several will progress to become great captains of industry in the future.”
