Building almost complete in P1/2

As part of their Houses and Homes topic, children in P1/2 have been working hard to build their own houses, complete with hinged doors!  They have even learned that roofs are actually triangular prisms! They are using Plan, Do, Review to help them complete their houses.  Hopefully we will invite mums and dads in to see the completed houses soon.

Camping in P1/2

As part of a topic on houses and homes, P1/2 have been learning all about materials. Thinking about the story of the Three Little Pigs, they first checked to check the strength of straw, sticks and bricks as building materials. Then then heard that the three little pigs had gone on a camping trip and had used lots of different materials as coats and tents….and it had started to rain. They tested out different materials to see what was the most waterproof. They were very impressed with balloon material!! Then they worked together to put up a tent in the classroom (although the tent is waterproof, the very strong winds meant that they did not put it up outside!)

The forest pitch

Last Friday I found out that I had made the shortlist for a very special event. The event is called the Forest Pitch. It is a competition for primary school kids in
Scotland. I made it into the last 30 out of 2000 kids.Forest pitch is a football event, that you have to design a football strip for a special game what will be played on a football pitch in the middle of a forest in 2012.4 people can win the event and whoever does win they will get their shirt worn by the players.

I am well chuffed …… and so is my mum! My gran thinks that I might even win! I am going away on the Tuesday 7th February to see if I’ve won. Im going to Hampden park in Glasgow.

P6/7 remember local hero

Major General Alexander McDougall was one of the most important men involved in the American War of Independence. At Portantruan where he was born, a cairn to him was unveiled last Thursday, 1st September. This young boy, born on Islay in 1732, grew up to be a truly great man.
We went to Portantruan in a minibus and then we climbed a small hill to get to the cairn. It was overlooking the Major General’s place of birth. Lord George Robertson, people from the Bank of New York, Mr Oglivary and Mr Reavey from the Museum of Islay Life were there along with some invited guests. Lord Robertson gave a speech and then we left. The others went to have lunch.
The Major General was born in 1732 at Portantruan. His family left Islay to go to America when he was only 6 years old. When he was 14 he became a merchant seaman and then a privateer. The British put him in prison for five months because he thought that America should not be ruled by the British. After the war, he became the first President of the New York Bank. He died when he was only 53. His last act was to be carried on a stretcher to vote against paper money.
I was very honoured to have been invited to the unveiling and I thought that it was very interesting what Major General Alexander McDougall did. It proves to me that if you work really hard you can do anything you want. I wonder what he could have achieved if he had lived longer?
