Primary 7 Rocket Science!

P7 were visited yesterday by Martin Bailey an Engineer from Wyman –  Gordon in Livingston. After hearing all about his job and how he became an engineer the pupils had their own chance at designing and building rockets. Pupils were split into groups of three or four and set about creating their own rockets.  Each rocket was given an astronaut (an egg, eggstronaut!) which they had to land safely after their launch. After presenting their rockets and features and how they were going to keep their eggstronauts safe they tested their rockets, launching them in the field outside. You will be pleased to hear that all our eggstronauts made it back safely. Well done P7 engineers.

Nessie needs our help!

Primary 1 received an email from Nessie! She needs our help because she would like to find out all about Scotland but she cannot leave her loch. Over the next few weeks the boys and girls in Primary 1 will be helping her to learn about Scotland. We will use this information to help us design and make a coat hook, hoopla game or desk tidy in technology. We will develop lots of skills such as drilling, sawing, cutting and painting. We can’t wait to show you what we’ve made!

As part of this topic we will also be doing outdoor learning. Each week different groups will be using our outdoor area to be creative and learn more about Scotland. This includes the Scottish weather as we will be going out in all weathers!

Last week we enjoyed discovering Scottish and Fairtrade food in our food technology lesson. We learned different skills such as spreading and cutting. Our favourite part was eating what we made!

Comic Relief

Primary 4 would like to say a huge THANK YOU to everyone who helped the school raise money for Comic Relief. Primary 4’s Comic Relief project The school has managed to raise over £1010 and we are still counting! The government has promised to double any money raised by schools so that means it will become more than £2000.

As well as red noses, Primary 4 sold loom bands and funny faces Hama Beads which we made ourselves. In addition to this there was a whole school competition to design Mr Taylor’s face for the day, won by Zoe from P3b (see photo). Everyone in the school dressed up on the day coming in with their funny faces.

There were some great acts in our talent show competition. The runners up were Holly, Rachel and Evie from P4a and the winners were Marek and Adam, from P6.

The Red Nose Group have sold out of red noses – that is a whopping 480 red noses they have sold in the past week! The Advertising Group have been busy with tannoy announcements, interviews, making posters and writing a letter to parents. The Fundraising Group organised the making of the picture bead funny faces and Loom Band jewellry and they are now selling the products around classes. They have also been collecting the entries for our competition to design Mr Taylor’s face. And finally, the Assembly Group have made a PowerPoint presentation and have been rehearsing for the big day tomorrow. Please remember to “Make Your Face Funny for Money” tomorrow and bring a donation for Comic Relief. Thank you for your support!

Zoo Lab

Today, the nursery were lucky to have a visit from Zoo Lab. We listened to lots of facts on why animals hibernate and the importance of Spring for bringing new life. We were able to touch/look at a snake, rat, scorpion, tarantula, snail and a millipede. Some of us were very brave and touched the animals. The snake looked slimy but was very smooth. The snail was very cold and slimy. It was really interesting to learn that baby snails are born with their shell.

Olivia the musical!

P7 are having an amazing time working on our Junior Production of ‘Olivia’, which includes lots of different characters from other musicals, books and films.
We have already started on our dress rehearsals while the prop and art group have been working on backdrops and props. The choreography and ICT groups have also been working especially hard to get everything together in time.
As for the cast, they have been working very hard on their lines, singing and accents as well as acting!
We can’t wait to show everyone our hard work and we hope you enjoy it!

Tremendous Tennis in P2 and P2/1.

Wow! We just keep on getting better and better at ball control and being quick on our feet.  We have learnt so much from Eoin and had an amazing time.  We really enjoyed the games he played with us, especially Jungle is on Fire which taught us to be quick on our feet and always look up towards the ball.  We are sad that our three weeks of tennis is finished but we hope to be able to develop our fast feet and ball control skills in other PE activities.

Thank you Eoin!

Pupils Celebrate Commonwealth Day – 9th March 2015

To celebrate Commonwealth Day ( 9th March 2015) there was a celebratory occasion arranged involving young people from local schools at the Civic Centre. The event was opened by the Provost, Councillor Tom Kerr.

Shirees (P7) and Kaylah (P2) were chosen to represent Williamston Primary School .

They saw the raising of the Commonwealth Flag, listened to a fantastic performance from Howden St Andrew’s Primary School Choir and met lots of other children representing their own schools and Commonwealth Countries. The morning was finished off with a drink and a bite to eat as well as a photo shoot for the local news.
