Primary 5 this week…

It’s been very busy again in Primary 5 this week!!

We have been working really hard on our new Numeracy topic ‘Decimals’ in preparation for starting our Money topic after the Easter holidays. Decimals has been a challenge but we’re doing really well with it.

In Literacy some of our reading groups started new books – Rockets started ‘The Iron Man’ and Shooting Stars started ‘Paradise High.’ The Crazy Craters are nearly finished ‘The BFG’ and the Astronauts are nearly finished ‘James and the Giant Peach’ so both of those groups will be getting new books before Easter too.

It was Science Week so to celebrate we completed the Tower Challenge! You have to build a tower using only once piece of paper and nothing else. Using different strategies such as cutting, slotting, folding and rolling the winning group built their tower 61.5cm high!

We worked in teams to complete this challenge and everyone showed amazing school values throughout.

We were also told about ‘St Mary’s Got Talent’ taking place on Thursday 28th of March before we split up for the Easter Holidays. We decided on our groups and what our acts are going to be for the talent show. We are going to be practicing a couple of times a week before the show and we are all really excited!

Finally, we had Parents’ Evening this week and it was lovely to see so many of you, and catch up! Everyone has been working really, really hard throughout Primary 5 and I am so proud of all of the pupils in class!

Have a great weekend everyone…see you next week!

Primary 5 this week…

Wow what another busy week we have had in Primary 5!

We have started our subtraction in numeracy and everyone has been putting in so much effort with our new topic! Keep it up!!

In writing, we were researching our own topic for our Information Reports using our class technology and will be writing our reports on Monday!

It was Book Week and we had lots of activities relating to this. We made book character wooden spoons and we may have contacted a couple of famous people to show them off to them!! Everyone did so well with this activity and all the spoons looked amazing!!!

It was also Catholic Education Week – ‘Pilgrims of Faith.’ Everyone researched a Saint they were interested in, some of the Saints were St Margaret, St Ninian, St John Ogilvie and St Bernadette. Everyone completed some great research and it was amazing to hear their different reasons for who they chose to look into. We then spent some time reading about St Margaret as the 16th of November is her Feast Day. We learned some very interesting facts!

Thanks for another amazing week P5!! Have a great weekend 🙂

Busy, busy, busy in Primary 5!

What a week we’ve had!!

Firstly, it has been ‘Money Week’ in Numeracy so we have focussed a lot of our activities around this. We attended assembly where we listened to our Numeracy Ambassadors tell us all about money week activities and we had a big school discussion about money too.

Mrs Wotherspoon ‘gifted’ us all £150.00 to spend in Tesco and Boots, some of us were club-card owners so got bigger discounts. We had lots of fun doing this activity, cutting and pasting our shopping lists as well as using our subtraction knowledge to calculate how much money we had left to spend.

We also had a visit from Blackburn District Credit Union who explained different ways for us to save our money and we played some games relating to saving too! We all participated really well with this activity and, used our manners and school values with our visitors. There was some great answers about what we would like to learn to save for from Primary 5, some of them were; animals we’d like, university, travelling and gifting it to charity.

We also completed our castles this week finishing up our Mary, Queen of Scots topic. Again everyone worked really well on this, using paper mache, different textures and colours to create and design replica castles of place where Mary, Queen of Scots lived.

And finally we have been learning something really special for our Christmas celebrations. After the summer holidays Primary 5 asked to learn British sign language so we are also challenging ourselves to learn ‘Rudolf the Red Nose Reindeer’ in BSL. Watch this space….

Massive well done on a very busy week P5!! Have a great weekend 🙂

Primary 5’s busy week!

Lots has happened in Primary 5 this week!

We have completed our numeracy assessments – we tried our very best with these as there was lots of questions. We had to use many different strategies to help complete the assessment but we did it!

Sentences was our grammar topic this week and we did really well with this activity too. We also started our new writing genre, information report, and did some investigations about firefighters which we all found really interesting!

We celebrated Saints Day at Mass and discussed this in our class together too.

Very well done on another great week Primary 5! I’m really proud of you all!!

Mrs Wotherspoon 🙂

Primary 5’s visit to Broomlee Camp

This week Primary 5 had the very exciting experience of going to Broomlee Camp for two days and one night! Everyone had so much fun and did so well with all of the challenges & activities.

There will be lots more photos uploaded onto the children’s Digital Profiles for special adults to have a look at.

Whilst we were away, the children that didn’t attend camp had lots of fun with Mr Henderson. The children got to play Ukulele’s, play poison dodgeball and create amazing Halloween art using oil pastels.

Have a good rest this weekend everyone, you deserve it after all the activities!

Primary 5

We have had such a busy week in Primary 5, with lots of new beginnings!

It started off with discussing our new writing genre in literacy which is Information Reports, then we moved onto a new numeracy topic, Fractions. We all put lots of hard work into these new topics and are all doing really, really well!!

We have a ‘classroom door competition’ on Monday 6th of February so we spent some time designing our door that had to be based on our class novel. Currently we are reading Matilda by Roald Dahl and it is a big hit so far! All of the pupils came up with different ideas for our door, noted them on our whiteboard in class and got to work! The attention detail has been amazing from their own individual mini books to the ‘tinfoil’ nails on the chokey door! Big well done P5!!

Today was also our first Friday Mass in St Mary’s and Primary 5 lead our Mass. I am so proud of all of them for their efforts and participation. The theme was Happiness and it certainly made me smile seeing all of them taking part and working together as a team to do such a great job! The 6 pupils who spoke during the Mass all received a special ‘Star of the Week’ certificate for all their efforts learning their readings and doing so well this morning.

Massive well done to Skye for being our ‘Star of the Week’ this week for all her hard work in our numeracy lessons! Excellent work this week Skye, you should be very, very proud of yourself!!!

We have had some great achievements outside of the classroom to celebrate this week too! We have our own champion gymnast who shared some great photos with us all this week of her tumbling and performing at a very high height!! And we also have a published artist with a painting in a national book!! Very big high fives and well done for these achievements this week!!

I hope you all have a great weekend and I’ll see everyone on Monday!!

Primary 5

Our first full back in into the swing of Primary 5 and what a busy week it has been! Everyone has worked really, really hard this week and I am so proud of you all 🤩

We have been working really hard on our numeracy, learning about Bar and Line Graphs. Everyone has put so much effort into learning more about this numeracy topic and the graphs that have been created look great!

Our spelling and reading groups started up again this week! Everyone was given new reading books and hopefully, these have been out at home for reading practice. The best way to improve our reading skills is to read, read, read and our skills are coming along really well.
There was lots of fun had in PE doing Gymnastics with Mrs McMaster and, with Mrs Blair in RE we are going to ‘Make a Pound Grow’. This is part of our Religious Education Plan for this term, and we have decided that we will make our Lenten experiences positive by raising money for SCIAF (Scottish Catholic International Aid Fund).

We have also been learning lots this week for our IDL topic, ‘Living on Earth’ and have been researching about the Oceans, its different habitats and creatures found in all different places under the water, including Coral Reefs, Kelp Forests, Seamoss Meadows and the Marina Trench!

With it being Robert Burns’ birthday this coming week we were discussing his poems and writings, and also created a colourful display for our corridor.
Don’t forget Friday February 3rd, Primary 5 are leading the Mass with the theme being ‘Happiness.’ All are more than welcome to attend, to support us and participate in the service. We hope to see you there 😁
