Continuing our celebration of books and reading for enjoyment during this Book Week we went for a visit to West Calder Library. The rain did not put us off and we had a lovely walk into West Calder. Ann the librarian was very welcoming and delighted to see us. She read us a very funny David Walliams book about a little girl who brought her pet snake to school. We then played an alphabet game and we had a little biscuit. We then spent some time looking at the books and we all checked our books out using the machine. Thank you so much to Ann for our lovely visit.

P4/3 Gifting Party
We got Book Week Scotland off to a fun start with our hosting party in P4/3. Some of our parents and carers joined us this afternoon to do some fun activities related to books. P3 were gifted a Read, Write, Count bag and P4 were gifted a new book. We all enjoyed creating a book character from a potato. We were very creative in our use of the materials we had to make the characters. We made Where’s Wally, Mr Twit, the White Rabbit from Alice in Wonderland, a minion, some aliens Harry Potter, Hermoine and lots of others. Thank you to all ours mums, dads and grandparents who came to help us. We especially loved the hot chocolate and biscuits.
Japanese Experiences in P4/3
Today has been an immersive day in lots of things Japanese.
We enjoyed experiencing some Japanese anime when we watched My Neighbour Totoro. This is a very popular anime created by a Japanese film studio, Studio Gibli. We watched a little part at the beginning in Japanese and then we changed it to English.
We then looked at the Japanese alphabet and tried writing some sounds in Japanese and we practised writing the Japanese words for animals. We found lots of the symbols were complicated to write.
in the afternoon we had a taster session of some Japanese food and we tried to use chopsticks to eat it. We tried sushi and some mochi, the mochi was definitely more popular than the sushi.
Lill y- I didn’t like the sushi
Jenson – I didn’t like any of the food, the outside of the mochi was weird
Freya – I loved the sushi and the mochi
Macie – I loved the mochi, especially the ice-cream inside.
Siena – I thought they were both the best thing in the world
Jorja – It wasn’t good.
Abner – I liked everything, the ice-cream and the sushi
Grace – I loved it all especially the sushi with the soy sauce
Joseph – The mochi felt weird in my mouth, it has a funny texture
Jake – I liked everything except the soy sauce and the outside of the mochi
Lucy – I liked everything because the sushi was really nice, I liked the seaweed and the mochi was a different kind of ice-cream.
Philip – I liked the ice-cream but I didn’t like the sushi
Jude – I didn’t like the sushi, I didn’t like the taste of the seaweed but I liked the mochi
Amber – I didn’t like the sushi but I did like the mochi

Fun in P4/3
Each week we love our time outdoors with Miss Nelson. Last week we were out in the woods exploring and playing. We were given a task to create a home for an animal using any materials we could find lying around. We used acorns, sticks, leaves, stones, string, little pieces of bricks and rocks.
We have been learning to read and say numbers in French. We had fun playing snakes and ladders using a French dice.
House corner in P4/3
In our classroom we have a house corner which we are always changing. Last week we had a business meeting which Joseph chaired and Riley took the minutes. During this meeting we all got to share our ideas for the house corner and what we would like to turn it into next. We thought about the time of year and lots of us had some very creative ideas. Afterwards we had a vote and it was decided to turn it into a haunted cinema.
We then worked in groups to create the haunted cinema. Some of us painted cardboard to be the outside spooky cinema building and some of us painted scary characters to decorate the inside. We discussed that we need tickets and money and a group of us made those. We made promotional posters which we will display to show which films are on in the cinema and we were very creative in making lots of snacks for the snack stall. We now have lots of popcorn, sweets, chocolate and drinks we can buy when we go to watch a film.
