P3 pupil leading our learning

As our IDL topic this term is The Human Body we are looking at the  skeleton and internal organs. Bonnie taught us about 1 major organ, the pancreas. Bonnie had some books which taught  us all about the pancreas and diabetes. She had her little teddy, Ruffles who has diabetes and she used him to show where he can have his injections and blood checked. We were very interested and enjoyed learning from Bonnie, we asked lots of great questions.  Thank you Bonnie.

Thank you, parents, from Primary 3!

A huge thank you to the parents and grandparents who were able to come along and support the children today.  They were delighted to work with you and plant their seeds.  We will watch them grow over the coming weeks and the children will bring them home before the Easter holidays.  We hope you had a fun morning with us!

SHARING THE LEARNING IN PRIMARY 3!

World Book Day fun in Primary 3!

Supporting World Book Day

What a day!  Great fun was had by all in P3.  We started our day by coming to school in our pyjamas – we could get used to this!

We did a reading doodle activity before putting our detective skills into action and setting off on a Where’s Wally picture hunt!  Back in class we were joined by P4 and we all took part in a live World Book Day football quiz.  Lots of schools across the country were taking part in this and we had to answer a series of questions from famous footballers.

Throughout the day we have done some paired reading, reading crosswords and word searches,  designed book covers and took part in authors live (Scottish Book Trust) We watched and listened to Catherine Rayner who shared her picture book “Arlo: The Lion Who Couldn’t Sleep“, a beautiful story about finding peace and calm.  Catherine also gave us a sneak peek at her sketchbook, and showed us step by step how to draw Arlo the lion. We had our pencils and paper at the ready!

In the afternoon we enjoyed Paired Reading with Primary 6 and we all enjoyed this and asked to do it again soon.  Lots of us in Primary 3 brought in a book from home for the whole school book swap which will take place next week.

We will be bringing home a £1 book token home today which is valid to use until the end of March.

A huge WELL DONE to all of our Primary 3 stars for practicing their poems at home this week!  We were blown away with how well you remembered the words and had confidence to say your poem to all your friends in class!  On Friday morning the whole school gathered in the hall for our annual Scots Poetry Competition.  Congratulations to the children in Primary 3 for sharing their Scots poem to the whole school.  We are so proud of you!

Primary 3 are sending lots of Valentine’s love to everyone!

Have a wonderful, happy, safe and fun February holiday!

Coding in Primary 3

This week we had the opportunity to use our problem solving and coding skills with the Bee-Bots.  We gave our Bee-Bot a sequence of instructions to navigate around the classroom. We had to be confident with left and right and work out directions for the Bee-Bot to follow.

Once we were confident with the basic coding instructions we then used maps where we could navigate the Bee-Bots around the roads.

Art and Design in P3

We have really enjoyed learning about famous artists this year. As our IDL topic is a  Scottish focus we wanted to learn about a famous  Scottish  artist.  We learned about Gillian Kyle who is a textile designer. She is greatly inspired by all things Scottish. We learned that she was born in Renfrewshire and studied at the Glasgow School of Art. She creates designs for products such as aprons, cushions and table mats. She takes her influence from lots of Scottish products such as Tunnocks Teacakes, Caramel Wafers, Irn Bru and haggis. We used Scottish products and looked at the design of their packaging and then created a piece of art in the style of Gillian Kyle.

P3 update

We have enjoyed learning about a very famous Scottish dog, Greyfriar’s  Bobby. We have used ICT to do our own research about Bobby and we found some very interesting facts. We wrote our own information reports all about Bobby.

We explored the use of line to create pencil drawings of Bobby. We used straight and wavy lines to draw his fur and features. We tried to make it look as realistic as possible.

We had the opportunity to share our learning with the whole school at assembly on Monday. We invited the school to challenge themselves to save energy. We explained that you can do simple things such as switch the lights off when you leave a room, unplug chargers when not in use, don’t leave the fridge door open for long, turn the tap off when brushing your teeth and wear warm clothes inside instead of turning the heating up. We all had our parts to say and we spoke confidently and clearly. Well done!

Learning about Robert Burns in P3

Robert Burns - Wikipedia

~ ROBERT BURNS ~

Robert Burns was a Scottish poet and song writer.  He is known around the world as Scotland’s national poet.  Burns Night is celebrated every year on 25th January, Robert Burns’ birthday.  Robert Burns was born on 25th January 1759 in the village of Alloway in Ayrshire, Scotland.  Burns had a very humble start to life.  He was the eldest of seven children and his father was a tenant farmer so the family often struggled for money.  From a young age, Burns worked as a farmer but his father knew education was important so he taught his children how to read and write. Some of Burns’ poems were based on the things he saw whilst he was out ploughing the fields.  He wrote ‘To a Mouse’ after he turned over a field mouse’s nest with his plough.  He wrote his first love song at the age of 15 but it wasn’t until the age of 27 that his poems were published.  Burns died on 21st July 1796 at the age of 37.  One of Burns’ most famous poems is Auld Lang Syne. It is sung all over the world on 31st December.

Primary 3 enjoyed learning all about this famous Scot.  We did lots of fun activities in class to celebrate him!

Karlie – He was very famous because of his poems and he worked on his dad’s farm.  Everyone knows who he is.

Cody – He was a Scottish person and he wrote amazing poems.

Kiera – He is very famous for poems.

Jaxon – He had lots of children and he had brothers and sisters.  He was only 37 when he died.

Bonnie – His first poem he wrote was when he was 15 and it was about a wee mouse.

Rocco – His house is a museum now.

Stella – I liked doing a fact file about him.

Jessica – We made Burns cards.  There are lots of statues of him around the world.

Damon – We listened to Auld Lang Syne and sang it.

Saving energy in Primary 3!

Let's Save Energy' Packs - Rainy Day Trust

ECO SCHOOLS

Throughout all my learning, I take appropriate action to ensure conservation of materials and resources, considering the impact of my actions on the environment. TCH 1- 02a

I can consider ways of looking after my school or community and can encourage others to care for their environment. SOC 1-08a

Primary 3 have been learning about some of the ways they can be eco-friendly.  This means encouraging people to engage in their environment by allowing them the opportunity to actively protect it.  It starts in the classroom, it expands to the school and eventually fosters change in the community.

Through listening to stories and carrying out research we have been finding out about how we can save energy and become more energy efficient.  We shared our learning with each other and designed posters to highlight this.  We have made a  commitment to turn the lights off in our classroom every Friday morning after playtime to save energy.

We wondered if any other classes would like to do the same?

If you turn them off when the light is not needed, even for a short period of time, you will be saving a lot of energy and reduce electricity demand which has a rippling effect.

Karlie – You can do lots of things like switching lights off, turning taps off so you don’t waste water, recycle old things and re-use them too so you are not wasting things.

Damon – We made posters about saving energy.  I’m trying to do some of the things at home like turning lights off when they are not needed.

Jaxon – Have a short shower and save electricity and water.

Jessica – Don’t use your tablet for that long because it needs to be charged up.  You can play with other games instead or read books.

Rocco – Walk to school rather than the bus or car.

Bonnie – Turn the heating down in your house and wear warm clothes when it’s cold so you don’t need the heating on that long.

Cody – Close the windows when the heating is on.  If it’s a sunny day you don’t need the heating on.

Ellie – If the washing machine is on, don’t have it up high (temperature).

Jacob – Turn off the TV and other things (devices) when you aren’t using them and don’t leave them on standby.

REMEMBER – Saving energy is really important to help protect the environment and save money on the household bills.  Our teachers have set us a challenge to do some energy saving activities at home over the coming week!
