Primary 5A Weekly Update- 30th September 2022

Dear Families,

Wow, what a busy week we have had again!

Throughout literacy this week we have been focusing on our reading skill of clarifying. We thought about what this means and how we can use different strategies to clarify a word or term we don’t understand. We had great fun trying to clarify the meaning of words in different languages with Mrs Callaghan and worked on producing a Frayer model to clarify the definition of some vocabulary we had not heard of before. For writing this week we have continued our procedural writing where we have been looking at ‘bossy’ verbs and ensuring we always include a title, goal, material and steps. We wrote a procedure to tell others how to plant a daffodil bulb (we did this ourselves last week during outdoor learning!) and Miss Ventisei was once again so proud of the quality of writing produced. Well done P5A!

This week in maths we have been using our knowledge of rounding to estimate an approximate calculation. We worked really hard on some challenge cards and enjoyed playing lots of different games throughout the week to help us understand this concept. On Wednesday, we worked collaboratively as a class to share and practice our understanding of the concept by producing some fantastic posters for our maths working wall- take a look at these in our collage! We also really enjoyed learning all about the  properties of a circle with Mrs Callaghan this week.

Another highlight of the week was our learning through science. We were learning about all of the different inventions that have changed space exploration and also some that have impacted our daily lives today- who knew that Nike Air Max trainers were designed by a NASA aeronautical engineer?! We enjoyed taking part in a QR code hunt around the classroom to collaboratively find all of the different inventions and use technology to research each one. Super teamwork was shown by everyone!

Throughout IDL this week we have been learning about Robert the Bruce. We listened to and discussed the famous story about the spider and Bruce losing the battle against England 6 times and also researched his life using the iPads. Some of us presented our findings using videos, images, powerpoints, word documents and lots more. We even posted them on a padlet page so we can all view them together. We also designed our very own battle shields fit for William Wallace and Robert the Bruce! We thought carefully about the design of each one and worked really hard to produce some amazing artwork- well done Primary 5!

On Friday, we started our introduction to coding. We used a programme called Scratch to code a short animation of our choice and Miss Ventisei was so impressed with our enthusiasm, wonderful digital skills and creativity. We are looking forward to developing our coding skills throughout the year!

Here are some of our class highlights of the week:

Emily: I LOVED the estimation and rounding ball toss game in maths this week!

Leo: My favourite part of this week was definitely coding.

Farrah: I liked cutting up newspapers and magazines to make our spelling posters this week!

Our Hot Chocolate Friday winner this week was Tyler. He consistently showed our school values of Ready, Respectful and Safe all week- well done Tyler, we are so proud of you!

Learning Highlights Primary 1A – 30th September 2022

This week we have been learning the ‘s’ sound. We made snakes using repeating patterns and carefully cut them out. It was great fun! In writing, we wrote our own sentences about what we could see in a farm picture. For Word Boost, we have been reading ‘Penguin’s Hidden Talent’ and we spoke about the talents that we have. We are getting very confident in listening for the words and explaining what they mean.

In maths, we have been doing different activities for Maths Week Scotland. We read the story ‘The Perfect Fit’ and we made patterns and objects using the shape tiles. We have also been learning the names of different 3D shapes. We now know how to write all the numbers from 0-9.

This week we learned about our sense of hearing and sense of sight. We played a sound game and we had to circle the correct picture on our worksheet. We listened to ‘Pirate Pete and his Smelly Feet’ and discussed smells we liked and disliked.

We have continued to enjoy spending time in our Optician Role Play Area.

Here are some of our personal highlights this week:

Vedansh – I enjoyed being Lead Learner.

Vasilisa – I enjoyed drawing.

Olga – I enjoyed writing.

Summer – I enjoyed practising ‘s’.

Lillian – I enjoyed playing the shape game.

Oliver – I enjoyed doing my writing.

Eve – I liked colouring in.

Miss Stebbing – I was very pleased with everyone trying so hard to write the number 8 and 9 correctly. I also enjoyed making patterns with the shape tiles at the maths table with everyone.

Congratulations to Summer who is this week’s Hot Chocolate Winner.

Primary 4B Weekly Blog 30th September 2022

Wow, we have reached the end of another very productive week in Primary 4B!

In maths/numeracy, we have moved on from Place Value and are now looking at time.  We have started off with understanding hours, days, months, years and seasons.  Next week we will be moving on to reading the time.  Any practice the children can do at home, starting with o’clock, quarter past, half past and quarter to, before reading to the nearest five minutes, will be invaluable.

In literacy, we have continued with our procedure work.  We looked at verbs and adverbs and understood their purpose.  We then found these in a procedure and identified how they were used in there.

We had a brilliant time at the hockey festival on Thursday.  We showed our super skills and worked well within our teams.

Matteo: I really enjoyed choosing some different friends to sit with inside during lunch and break.  (Matteo’s ankle is in a cast so we are taking extra special care of him!).

Aiden:  I really liked going to the hockey festival and learning Spanish.  Some of the hockey festival was really funny.

Ishani M: I really enjoyed doing maths (seasons and time).  My favourite out was seasons because it was fun writing them down. My personal favourite is summer.

Ishani S and Millie: I liked doing the kindness calendars.

Khael:  I liked doing handwriting (it and ck).

Markuss: I liked doing hockey.

Very well done to Jonah, who is our hot chocolate winner this week.  Jonah has been engaging really well with his learning in a very respectful manner.

Well done to the children who are remembering to bring in their reading books on a Thursday.  Please can anybody who forgot bring theirs on Monday.

Have a great weekend and I look forward to seeing you on Monday!

Hi Families of P2a

We have had another super week. Lots of hard work, awesome learning and fun!

Some of our highlights:

It was Maths Week Scotland and we had lots of fun doing maths challenges. One of our favourite activities was working in teams to make symmetrical pictures, using loose materials.

Linda – Me and Deveena made a beautiful symmetrical butterfly and flowers.

Grace, Caleb and Vivien – We loved making a symmetrical picture with loose parts. We made a face.

Shay – I made an eagle Mickey Mouse.

In topic we learned about Concord and super sonic speed!

Jack – It travels really far in short times.

Ollie – It doesn’t fly anymore.

If you could fly anywhere in the World where would you go? The children loved talking about this and drawing pictures of the lovely places.

Chimamanda – I choose Antarctica. I drew me and my mum there with the penguins and the snow.

Angel – I drew the pyramids because I want to go to Egypt.

Diana – I drew the Northern Lights in Iceland.

We had lots of fun learning the days of the week in Spanish. We learned some cool songs and dances to help us remember these.

Huge Congratulations to Angel, our Hot Chocolate Winner!

Primary 3B – Week Beginning 21/09/22

We have had a short, but busy week in Primary 3B!

This week, children have enjoyed playing Banana Tig and learning basketball skills during P.E. In art, we made our own sketches of The Queen, with Paddington Bear and her Corgi.

In Numeracy, we have been counting backwards and forwards in twos and tens; and in Maths we have been reading, writing and showing the time by drawing hands on the clocks.

Children particular enjoyed our house activities this week, which focused on bullying.

During Music, the children have been learning notes with Mrs Morrison and were very enthusiastic!

Furthermore, within our Vikings topic we have researched runes (the alphabet). Children wrote their names in runes and also used these to illustrate Viking shields. Children also engaged in map work, by colouring and labelling the countries to show Viking Settlements and Homelands

As part of our work in Spanish, we revised greetings and responses to how are you and added and you? (Como estas? y tu?).

This week our star tables were Table Uno (1) and Table Cuatro (4), both earning 11 marballs each! Well done!

Finally, I would like to congratulate Kacper this week on winning The Hot Chocolate Award! Kacper always gives his best and displays wonderful manners!

P2B Week Beginning 19th September 2022

Hello P2B families!

Here are the learning highlights of the week (however short) from the Blue Table:

Blair said the highlight of his week was when we went into the nursery garden with our whiteboards and markers and made tally marks when we saw any blue and red cars travel past our school.  We listened to a story called ‘Tally O’Malley’ and wanted to make tally marks like the characters in the story.  So just like them, we did this when we spotted red and blue cars.  Some children were the blue team and some the red team.  Ask your child which colour of car did we see the most!

Karina also loved our learning about tally marks only she has picked when we surveyed the class to find out their favourite food.

Ressa liked our House Group activity on Friday.  The whole school met in House Groups to complete activities surrounding the topic of bullying.  It was so exciting to be with other fellow House members and go into different classrooms around the school (unless you were St Margaret’s as that was Mrs Devlin’s House).

Sofia was so excited to recount that the best part of her week was being a Star Writer!  This week we wrote about our favourite toy as we compared them to toys that our grandparents may have played with.  Sofia met the success criteria of writing what was her favourite toy, what it looked like and how it felt.  She also wrote a further sentence about when she plays with it.  Impressive!

Lilly said her best part of the week was PE where she played Ninja Tig!

Mrs Devlin’s highlight was our writing lesson as mentioned above. Everyone worked very hard to meet the success criteria and there was a lot of detail in the pictures of their toys too!  Well done P2B!

Congratulations to Lewis, our Hot Chocolate award winner this week!

I hope you all continue to have a great weekend and hope you can make our ‘Sharing the Learning’ event on Wednesday, an opportunity to view your child’s work so far this year and talk to them about the learning that was taking place.  Just a reminder that the two time slots are 2-3pm or 6-7pm.

Primary 1A Learning Highlights 23rd September

This week we have been learning the ‘k’ sound. We made our own kites but it was too wet to fly them so we are looking forward to doing this on Monday.  We also wrote a sentence about what we can do and we tried our best to write the sounds we could hear.

In maths, we have been learning about shapes. We played a game where we had to feed the shape monsters the correct shape.

We have been learning about our sense of sight this week and we made our very own glasses. Do you know that our eyes see things upside down and our brain turns it the correct way?  We have set up an Opticians in our classroom and we have enjoyed wearing the glasses.

We also had a chance to learn with our friends in P1B and got a chance to visit their classroom. We spent some time with them in the Woodland where we were exploring the area and then we looked for shapes in the clouds.

Some of our personal highlights this week are:

Vedansh – I enjoyed playing with the glasses.

Connor – I liked being the Lead Learner this week.

Alexander – I liked making the glasses.

Darragh – I liked playing with the Numberblocks.

Tiya – I enjoyed playing with my friends.

Miss Stebbing

I was very proud of everyone for trying to write the words in their sentences. I also enjoyed spending time in the Woodland and sampling some chocolate ice cream made in our mud kitchen.

Congratulations to Lillian who is our Hot Choc winner this week.
