STEM Competition Preparation!

As part of our Junior Leadership Team, the STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths) group decided that they would like to learn about the construction of the new Queensferry Crossing. We spent some time in our sessions researching and watching videos around the construction of the bridge.

The children then decided that they would like to organise and run a STEM competition for the whole school as part of the upcoming British Science Week from the 9th to the 18th of March 2018.

Over the past few weeks we have been designing posters and experimenting with different ways and materials to construct bridges. We will now arrange a timetable for each class during British Science week to run the competition with each class, taking on a leadership role.

Primary 4 learn to use strategies for multiplication!

This week primary 4 have been looking at effective strategies for multiplication. The children have enjoyed sharing their strategies and deciding which methods they find the most efficient for different multiplication sums.

We even made learning posters to show which strategies we have learned. When multiplying 1 digit by 1 digit we can use:

-Arrays

-A bar model

-Repeated addition

-Equal grouping

-Empty number lines

Burns Celebration

We had a lovely afternoon on Thursday at our Burns Celebration.  Pupils from P1 to P7 recited Scots poems and the Nursery shared a brilliant rendition of the ‘Shoogly Woogly’.  Our judges (Mrs McKenzie, Mrs Bokhari and Mrs Tempany) had a very difficult job.  They chose five pupils to represent us at the West Lothian event on 7th March – Cailin  P7, Leah  P6, Kaylie  P5, Oliver P1 and Adam P2.  Very well deserved!  Everyone joined together to sing ‘O Flower of Scotland’ and ‘Caledonia’.

Duruma Dolls

P6 made Duruma dolls that are traditional talismans from Japan. They made them by moulding clay into the shape of a doll and when they clay dried they painted them loads of different colours. When you paint the doll you don’t paint the eyes because when you have a wish you colour in one eye and when it comes true you colour in the other eye. The main colors of a Duruma doll are white and red because the Japanese flag is white and red.     This Is a Duruma doll

P7’s Fantastic Visit to West Calder High School

This afternoon Primary 7 were able to finally make a spatula that they had been working on during Dr Cherry’s visits. Dr Cherry is Craft, Design and Technology Teacher from WCHS .

Dr Cherry has been working with the children for 4 weeks. This and next week, Primary 7 will be visiting the high school to experience a lesson. The children really enjoyed making their spatulas from wood. They handled the equipment really carefully and listened well to instructions.  We look forward to next weeks lesson.

Competition winner

To celebrate Burns Night, Morrisons (Livingston) organised a Scots poetry competition for local p7 pupils.  We handed in lots of entries and were delighted to hear today that Katie has won.  Katie wrote a funny poem ‘I want a dug’.  Well done Katie.  We will find out soon what Katie has won and there is also a prize for the school.
