Mid Calder Reading Challenge

To celebrate Book Week Scotland,  MCPS were set a reading challenge- to take a photo of ourselves reading for pleasure in an unusual place. We were inundated with weird and wonderful pictures of some very unusual places, and it looks like everyone had lots of fun taking part in the challenge. A big well done to all those who tweeted us their photos, or brought them into school on paper or on their own device.

Even some of the staff got involved…

Primary 7 Book Week

In Primary Seven, we have celebrated Book Week by focusing our work on comparing and contrasting the modern and older adaptations of Alice in Wonderland, with the original Lewis Carroll novel.

We have found some challenges when reading the novel – the language used when the book was originally written in 1865, has been difficult to follow at times whilst reading.  We have also found that Lewis Carroll is a less descriptive author, compared to some modern day authors, therefore we have found visualising Wonderland quite challenging.  We have had to refer back to the 1951 Disney version to help us to think about setting.

We are currently working on developing our knowledge of what a synopsis is and how to write one, within the context of a film review.  We’re looking forward to being able to give our “Star Ratings” to each of the versions we have studied.

Reading Open Afternoon

As part of Scottish Book Week Primary 1 to 7 invited their family and relatives to teach them all about reading. Parents got to experience what a reading lesson is like in their child’s class and the range of activities and resources available. They were also given tips on how to support their child at home.

Thank you to everyone who attended.

School Improvement Plan: Pupil Version

At our Pupil Council Meeting this week we looked at the School Improvement Plan and what this would look like, sound like and feel like in our school. The pupils worked together in small groups to use OneNote to collaborate together using the one document, with the other pupils supporting the younger ones.

Scottish Cup visits MCPS!

Today we hosted the Scottish Cup as part of Hibernian Football Club #Persevered Tour. This tour visits 114 venues across Edinburgh and the surrounding areas, and they shared the story of their victory and shared message of the importance of preserving.

You can view our photos on their Flickr account.

Into Film Festival

The Into Film Festival is a free, annual, nationwide celebration of film & education for 5-19 year olds and as a school we have attended the festival for the past 3 years. After the pupils have watched the film they analyse it in class and complete a film review activity.

Primary 4 watched Ice Age Collision Course, Primary 5 watched Inside Out and P6-7 viewed Alice Through the Looking Glass in 3D.

Primary 3 and 3/2 visited Edinburgh Zoo to view My Neighbour Totoro a Japanese fantasy film. They also took part in a workshop and had a quick tour around the Zoo.

Thank you to all the parent helpers who helped support the cinema visits.

P7/6 Learning Letter Term 2

Dear Parent/Carer,

Welcome to Term 2 in Primary 7/6. Last term, the children were incredibly motivated and enthusiastic whilst learning all about World War Two. They demonstrated that they are successful learners and effective contributors through a variety of learning experiences. Our focus for IDL learning this term is our production of Alice the Musical.  Pupils are currently working very hard to learn songs, lines and dances to create a fantastical and magical production, which we are all excited to share with you! As usual, in the build up to Christmas, the school will be a hive of activity. Particular events are detailed at the bottom of the page.
