Strive to survive with P3!

In P3 over the last two weeks, we have been learning about the features of a brochure/leaflet. We are going to write a leaflet all about ‘How to Survive on a Deserted Island’ which links well with our IDL topic.

We now know that a brochure has to have a front cover with a title, some paragraphs, bright colours to stand out and context appropriate words/adjectives. We looked at some examples of brochures and discussed the features with our talking partners. Then, using this knowledge, we started to plan ideas for our first section, ‘How to make a shelter’ by looking at these 3 questions;

Why would you need a shelter?

What materials would you use?

Where would you build it and when would you build it?

To help us get some advice on how to build a good shelter, we watched a video from top survival expert, Bear Grylls.

From watching this video, we were then able to plan and create a context appropriate word bank with some words like venomous, dangerous, hypothermia, as black as…, torrential and terrified.  Some materials that we could use are Moho bark, Bayleaf palm leaves, Kahuna palm and thatching palm. We had some great discussion of the meaning of these words when creating this word bank.

“I was practising using  capital letters and full stops at the beginning and end of my sentences”- Hana C.

“I learned that Bear Grylls can teach us a lot about surviving on a deserted island”- Teagan.

“First I didn’t know what brochures were, but now I do. I also wasn’t sure who Bear Grylls was, but now I know a little bit about him and I enjoyed it”- Theo.

“At the start of writing I found it quite tricky, but after using the word bank I was more confident with my writing and it turned out pretty good”- Rebekah.

Have you been Making Maths Meaningful?

In P3 this year, we decided to do our class assembly on Maths and in particular focus on how we make maths meaningful within class and in our own lives at home.

Over the last term in Maths, we have been learning about multiplication and division. Through grouping and sharing activities, making and finding arrays and then looking at multiplication and division calculations, we have been developing our knowledge and understanding of the links between these operations.

To make it real within our own lives, we went on an array search within our homes to find different array patterns. Some of us went on an array search within school. It was great fun!

In order to help us develop our mathematical language and talk about different strategies we use to solve calculations and worded problems, we have loved doing number talks. We get to share with our peers ‘what we see’ and ‘how we see it’. Sometimes Miss Kerr visualises what we see and sometimes we do. We also get to apply what we talk about in number talks to solve mild, spicy and hot calculations within mental maths.

So we continue to make maths meaningful in our lives, currently learning about analogue and digital clock times and using time in school and at home.

How are you making your maths meaningful in your lives right now?

Enjoy our video and Maths song to remind you why maths is fun and meaningful!

Reading and Writing Non-Fiction Books with P3/2

What an exciting few weeks the children have had in P3/2 – We have been researching and writing our own non-fiction books LI. We are learning to write a non-fiction book.

In Reading – We were learning over a six week period;

  • About the features of a non-fiction book.
  • To consider how non-fiction books differ from fiction books.
  • To discuss the difference between fact and fiction

How – lots of different opportunities were experienced to ‘hook’ us in e.g.

  • I can share two new facts/information I have learned from my non-fiction book
  • I can make questions to find the answers
  • I can find the answers to others questions

Activity;

In reading groups appoint facilitator and resource manager

Give out white boards and pens

In groups the facilitator chose people in turn to share two facts they had learned and then invited questions from the group.

What are good question starters? What, where when how who is etc…

Next they had to generate three questions that you might find the answer to in their text. Mrs Allsopp modelled outloud her thinking giving an example from each text.

They then gave their questions to another group to find the answers!

In writing we were able to then generate our own success criteria having thoroughly researched the ‘common’ features of non-fiction texts.

  • I can identify the success criteria for my book
  • I can write three chapters – each chapter must share three new facts.
  • I can include a picture, and/or diagram
  • I can include an index , contents, glossary
  • I can include a Front and back cover with a title and blurb

Now that we had completed the research we were ready to make our own books.

The success criteria were referred to throughout the process.

When the books were complete the children had to write a book review on each other’s…a lot of feedback and discussion was had.

Finally our books have been displayed for anyone to have a read and learn!

Using ICT to enhance learning in Mid Calder

We are living in a constantly evolving digital world and technology has an impact on nearly every aspect of our lives. And, we are very lucky to be able to use this technology in school to develop skills that will help us in the world of work and in our journey as lifelong learners in our ever advancing world.

Here are some of the ways that we use ICT to enhance our teaching and learning in Mid Calder Primary School:

Great Edinburgh Run – Playground Fundraising

Liam (P3) and Alivia (nursery) are running in the Great Edinburgh run next Sunday and are hoping to raise funds towards the playground fund which the school and PSA are raising money for.

Below is a link to their Crowdfunding page, if you are able to spare anything, no matter how small – they would be very thankful.

Curriculum Evening: Maths

On Thursday night we invited parents and carers along to find out about our world of Maths at Mid Calder Primary. As you know Maths is on our school improvement plan for the second year, we began in the hall discussing with parents our journey with maths so far. Then the Numeracy shared with us some information about SEAL (stage of early arithmetical learning) and how parents can support at home.  This was followed by workshops in classes demonstrating what a typical maths lesson looks like and how parents can support their child at home. A big thank you to everyone who supported the event and to our house and vice captains who helped with the smooth running of the event.

Feedback from parents included:

  • ‘These evenings are great to get ideas as to how to help my child at home’.
  • ‘Our daughter talks a lot about the strategies she is learning about’.
  • ‘My child is very enthusiastic when doing Maths homework’.
  • ‘This was a good insight into how my child is learning and developing within Maths’.
  • ‘We can see the improvements being made, keep up the good work’.

  • I can take part in the Nativity/ concert.

By P7 it might include:

  • I can use my own device in school safely.
  • I can take part in a residential.
  • I can apply for House Captain.

Look out for our finished achievement lists!

Stay Safe, Be Smart!

Last week, P3 and P3/2 joined together to think about how we could be safe on the internet for Safer Internet Day 2016. As a group, we looked into Hector’s World and discussed and shared some of the main ideas of internet safety such as;

  • Keep safe and keep your personal information private
  • Read the terms and conditions
  • Ask an adult you trust for permission before going on any website/putting in any details
  • Always check if information on a website is safe and true

Please follow the link to access more about Hector’s world-

Challenge set: How can you be SMART on the internet?

We challenge you to come up with 5 top tips or create a poster on how to be safe when using the internet.
