Drawing characters using Paint

We are learning to use software to create pictures and words.

I can use Paint software on my own (independently).

I can use Paint software to create a picture of my story character.

I can use Paint software to type the name of my story character.

Last week we were exploring how to use Paint software on the netbooks. We were not allowed to ask Miss Burton any questions about Paint, instead we explored the software, making some mistakes along the way. We realised it was okay to make mistakes as we learned from our mistakes and our peers could help us if needed help.

This week we progressed in our learning by using Paint to create a character from our Three Little Pigs story and to write their name. We also learned  how to save our work onto Pupil Shared, and realised this is an important skill for life as it means we can find our work again and can make changes to it at another time. you will see some examples of our characters below.

Making Sushi – P6

We are learning to make sushi in a safe and correct way.

We can wash hands before we prepare food.

We can prepare are bamboo mats with clingfilm and nori.

We can lay the rice and toppings evenly.

We can put our hands in the right position to roll the sushi.

Here are some comments from our class: “It was fun, tasty and disgusting to feel”; “when it was done it looked yummy.”; “It was a very unusual experience.”

Kapla Ships Ahoy!

We are learning to create a ship from construction materials by using and following a design plan.

I can use Kapla to create my pirate ship design.

P2/1 had lots of fun last week when we had the opportunity to design and construct our own pirate ships.

We have been learning all about the key features of a pirate ship and we were able to apply this knowledge when we made a design plan for our own ship.

Working in small groups, we were sure to include a bow and stern, deck, rigging, sails and a crows nest as well as a captains cabin, store room and a galley.

Our finished creations were very impressive and we enjoyed showing and sharing them with other groups. Many team skills were demonstrated including perseverance, communication, collaboration and contribution.

Finlay Fe said ”I needed to have steady hands to make sure it didn’t fall down.”

Oliver commented ”My team had to stay calm and not get frustrated. If it fell down we understood and built it back up.”

Eilidh made the point –  ”We had to work together to build the ship.”

Take a look at our pictures and see our designs for yourself!

P6-5 and P5 Hat Workshops

Hat- Tastic IDL

Learning Intention

1. We are learning to create 3D sculptures which represent hat design for a purpose

2. We are learnng to use a variety of media and techniques to create our hat designs

Success Criteria
A successful design will have,
-a style
-a chosen base colour
-represent your personality
-2 elements in your design from the hat workshop

During the last two weeks, Primary 5 and Primary 6-5 have been very busy designing hats and learning about the design process. This will all come together in a final hat showcase at Howden Park Centre on the 17th June.

We first all had to read our design brief/challenge and then start thinking about how our hats would represent our personalities and be bright and colourful. During the design process, we recorded our ideas and thinking in our design journals. These entried included illustrations, sketches, labels, dates and an evaluation of each day.

We were lucky enough to have a professional Milliner visit us, Sally- Anne Provan, and she provided two hat workshops. These were fantastic experiences, allowing us to learn new skills from an expert and express our own creativity at the same time. We were measuring, cutting, gluing and working co-operatively during both of these workshops. In the end, the results were some amazing and individually styled hats!! We can’t wait to show them off next week to our parents. All parents are welcome to this event.

P6 are Launching Ahead in Art

Learning Intention:

We are learning to use recycled materials to design and make a space related object.

Success Criteria:

Our models must-

– be 3D

– resemble a real life space object

– be made from recycled materials

This week, the Primary 6s from P7/6 joined with the Primary 6 class and were given the challenge to design and make an object that you might find in space using recycled materials.

First, we sketched a design of our object then , when our plan was complete, we started to build. We had to use a real life picture of our object to help us. Michael, Ellie, Craig, Jamie, Lachlan and Kasse all made a space rockets, William made a space shuttle, Abby made the Hubble Telescope and Neve made a moon buggy. We had to use our knowledge of space from our learning in science, as well our craft, design and art skills to make our final objects. We  haven’t finished them yet, but we are sure they are going to look great.

“I really enjoyed painting and gluing my Hubble telescope to try and make it stand up on a tilt,” commented Abby.

“I thought it was one of the best things I’ve ever made and I really enjoyed it,” said Michael.

“Considering there were a few disasters, I liked getting messy with the paint,” added Neve.

P5’s are the chefs

Great fun and learning was had with P5 and our P7 helpers in the cooking classroom this week. Following on from our healthy product challenge we had the opportunity to apply the following skills, knowledge and understanding.

When planning to cook, we need to select the most suitable ingredients, equipment and food skills for successful results.

  • a) To be able to write and follow recipes.
  • b) To be able to weigh and measure accurately.
  • c) To be able to select and use the most appropriate ingredients and equipment to plan and cook a range of dishes.
  • d) To be able to modify existing recipes.

There is a range of additional food skills which enable us to cook.

  • a) To be able to demonstrate an extended range of food skills and techniques.

Buying, storing, preparing and cooking food safely and hygienically are vital for health.

  • a) To know that food can spoil and decay due to the action of microbes, insects and other pests.
  • b) To understand and use date marks and food storage instructions on food packaging.
  • c) To demonstrate good personal hygiene when cooking
  • d) To demonstrate good food safety and hygiene when cooking

In our plenary we discussed

  • A recipe is a set of instructions for preparing/cooking a food dish, e.g. how to bake a bread.
  • To ensure that a recipe works, it is important to weigh and measure ingredients accurately.
  • It is important to select and use the most appropriate ingredients and equipment to plan and cook a range of dishes.
  • Many recipes can be modified to produce exciting and original alternatives.
  • Good personal hygiene is vital when cooking to avoid the risk of food poisoning.
  • Good food safety and hygiene is vital when cooking to avoid accidents and risk of food poisoning.

P6-5 Dessert Mania

IDL/Food Technology Project

TCH 1-11a,TCH 2-11a, TCH 1-11b, TCH 2-11b

LI; We are learning to apply our knowledge and understanding of healthy choices to design a new health product.

SC;
I can design a new healthy food or drink product that incorporates two or more food groups.

I can make my product using the correct ingredients.

Last week we had fun making our fruity desserts. We used our recipes from the ‘Apprentice challenge’ and our recipe writing project in class. After looking at our recipes closely we had to write a shopping list with all ingredients we would require and list all equipment needed for this session.
We were all very excited about our creations and the excitement of eating/drinking them afterwards! Firstly we talked about hygiene in the kitchen and safety rules when using sharp knives. We all washed our hands and prepared the surface area we were going to work on.

Desserts detailed below:
Caitlin N and Anna made Healthy fruit boats
Laura and Olivia made Berry Boo smoothie
Charlie, Louis and Euan made a Raspberry crush smoothie
Zach, Reece and Harry made Blueberry Bananza smoothie
Ayla and Louis made Fruit cocktail
Holly and Caitlin N made Mr Pears
Rudi, Reno and Ben made a Cloudy smoothie
Connor and Ellis made Berryblue smoothie
Trystan, Chiaro and Jacob made an Orange delight smoothie

Ayla and Holly commented, “We really enjoyed making our own product come to life and the best bit was eating it with a little fresh cream!!”

Internet Safety: Advice for Parents

Technology is great and offers fantastic opportunities for children. However, the technology can be misused, and this can be very painful for those who are the targets of cyberbullying. Adults need to help children and young people prepare for the hazards whilst promoting the many learning and social opportunities available. Please find some useful websites below.
