BEYC on the Glow Gallery!

At Bathgate Early Years Centre we use Glow to develop and extend children’s learning through participating in Glow TV events and hosting Glow meets and events of our own in the Early Years Meeting Room.  We were contacted from Education Scotland to share our good practice with education staff from all over Scotland on the Glow Gallery.

National Spring Clean 2015

Children and staff at Bathgate Early Years Centre took part in National Spring Clean 2015 in conjunction with West Lothian Council and Keep Scotland Beautiful this week.  The Environmental Warden team provided appropriate Litter Picks and Bags as well as also removing all of the rubbish collected afterwards. As part of their ongoing eco schools work, the children have been learning about caring for and helping the environment by putting their litter in the bin and also the importance of recycling litter.  Well done everyone, the garden looks fantastic.

Happy Easter from everyone at BEYC

It was nice to end our term with some lovely Spring weather and have our Easter egg hunt outside in the garden.

The staff at Bathgate Early Years Centre would like to wish all our children and families a happy Easter holiday.  We look forward to seeing you  all again and welcoming our new children and families in the Summer term.

Returning children start back nursery on Monday 20th April.

Goodbye Miss Gardner and welcome Miss McLeary

Today we said goodbye to Miss Gardner, who is leaving us to have another baby.  While she is gone Miss Mcleary will be looking after the morning Purple group and also the new Orange afternoon group.  We will all miss Miss Gardner but look forward to learning lots and having fun with Miss McLeary.   The morning children are all very excited about Miss Gardner’s new baby and keen to help choose a name for the him/her!

BEYC Space Station

We have enjoyed learning all about Space and the Solar System this term.  Our house corner transformed into a ‘space station’, we have been investigating ‘space goo’ and we were also lucky enough to be at nursery during a solar eclipse!

On the 24th of March the afternoon group took part in a Glow meet (video conferencing) with a real astronaut.  Over 100 schools from all over Scotland took part to ask Commander Chris Hadfield questions about his time as a commander of the International Space Station and his two shuttle missions in space.  We were extremely lucky to be selected to ask a question live on the webcam in front of all the other schools.  We all sat at the Smartboard (some of us dressed up in astronaut costumes!) to listen to Commander Hadfield, who called all the way from Mexico.  Our very important question was “Are there aliens in Space?” by Ava aged 3.  Ruby aged 3, very bravely stepped up to the webcam and asked the question on behalf on the nursery.

Thanks again to Jennifer McDougall form Education Scotland who organized another fantastic Glow meet.

Stay Play and Learn

Thank you to all who got involved and supported the children’s learning at Stay, Play and Learn this month.  Have a look at the gallery to see what a fun, busy week we had…..

Fairtrade Fortnight and Comic Relief.

We recently celebrated Fairtrade Fortnight in nursery. A small group of children enjoyed a visit to Scotmid to search for Fairtrade items in the store. We used our vouchers that were kindly donated by Scotmid to buy Fairtrade bananas to use for snack as well as buying Fairtade ingredients to use for baking and smoothies and to make banana splits on our firepit. We also bought a selection of Fairtrade products for prizes for our Fairtrade raffle for parents and staff.  Tom the Manager was very helpful and spoke to the children about Fairtrade and shared Fairtrade chocolate and bananas with them.

Thank you to everyone who bought raffle tickets.  Proceeds will go to Comic Relief. Thanks also to everyone who took part in our Fairtrade competition. We collected lots of Fairtrade packaging which we used in our Fairtrade cafe and shop and also in our art and craft area.

Well done to everyone who dressed in red, wore a ‘funny face’ red nose and donated to Comic Relief 2015.  The total amount raised this year was £73.
