Fairtrade Fortnight

Fairtrade Fortnight takes place from 27th February-12th March 2017.  We have been talking about this in nursery and how farmers around the world deserve a fair price for the hard work they do and that Fairtrade products help ensure this happens.  This will mean the farmers and their children won’t go hungry, can go to school, can pay for medical care if needed and also have better living conditions.  We have started to look out for the Fairtrade logo on our products at snack and baking as well as at the art and craft area. If you are out and about shopping and buy a Fairtrade product please bring in 1 wrapper/package with a note where you bought it to help add to our Fairtrade nursery activities. (eg.coffee, tea, bananas, chocolate, bubble bath.) Please also look out for our Fairtrade raffle on Wednesday 8th March! (supported by Scotmid,Tesco and Morrisons)  Proceeds from this raffle will go to Comic Relief.  If you wish, please bring your child to nursery with a different hair do on Wednesday 22nd March for Comic Relief when we also be  selling red noses.          Thank you for your support.

Severe Weather

Schools and severe weather

In the event of closures schools will contact parents/carers in the normal way via Groupcall. Parents/carers should ensure that their school/nursery has up to date contact information.

In addition changes will be notified via Facebook , Twitter and local media.

School closures

The Head Teacher has responsibility for undertaking a risk assessment in the event of severe weather or building difficulties. There are several factors which may impact on this decision including: the building itself and whether there is water and power, access to the school and decisions of school transport operators; and whether there are enough staff available to ensure that the school can open safely; and whether it is safe to send children home during severe weather. The Head Teacher takes the decision to close a school to pupils in consultation with a member of the senior management team in Education Services.

Travelling to school

In extreme weather conditions such as snow, parents/carers should carry out a risk assessment as to whether they consider it safe for their child to travel or walk to school. Parents/carers should then inform the school of their decision at the earliest opportunity.

Wood Shavings Request

We are looking for donations of natural wood shavings for our fire pit.  If anyone can help please speak to Mrs Todd.

We use wood shavings and cotton wool to catch the sparks from the flint to light fires in our fire pit.

Video coming soon.

Numeracy and Maths at BEYC

Nursery staff participated in a numeracy and maths Bathgate cluster training session last week.  One of our next steps is to share and swap ideas with our children, parents/carers around early numeracy and maths development.

We have uploaded a file with descriptions and photographs of some of the activities at nursery but would love to discover what children do at home and give these a try at nursery.

Please chat to any of the nursery staff, bring in photographs or email your ideas/photos/videos to Miss Wilkinson eva.wilkinson@westlothian.org.uk for staff to collate them all together and share, with your permission.
