The Smatboard has been very popular this week in nursery and has encouraged lots of children to practice their writing. Can you see why? There is a special piece of digital technology connected to the Smartboard called an ‘Easi-View Primary Visualiser’, which works a little like a projector. The visualiser has many features but this week we are using it to capture live video (of the children writing on whiteboards with marker pens) projected onto the Smartboard.

As promised here is a video recorded and edited by some of the afternoon children all about safely working at the fire pit. We used our GoPro camera to record footage of how we safely make fire on the the fire pit to cook marshmallows (on this particular day) and then how to safely put the fire out. The firepit sessions last around 30 minutes however this video has been cropped to ensure it is interesting for our viewers and so there is not lots of repetition of information.
After lots of discussion with children when watching this video in nursery we have now replaced the rope circle (advised at initial staff training) with a painted circle on the grass to make it even safer.

Yesterday Mrs Lynch, Miss Wilkinson and Miss Kelly traveled to Wormit Primary School in New Port on Tay to receive our Digital Schools Award. As mentioned in a previous blog post, we are one of the first schools in Scotland to be named as a Digital School through this award!
The Digital Schools Award recognizes best practice and builds on the progress already made, by providing a pathway and resources for schools seeking to do more with digital technology. The programme also recognises those who achieve excellence and supports the efforts of schools, teachers and learners in making the best use of digital technology in the classroom.
Schools that achieve excellence will be awarded ‘Digital Schools’ status recognised by Education Scotland.
Bathgate Early Years Centre will now become a mentor school to support other schools on their journey to becoming a Digital School and we are looking forward to the next few years and the exciting innovations ahead!

Today, local Councilors John McGinty and Lawrence Fitzpatrick visited BEYC to meet children and staff to congratulate them on the Award. Look out for a photograph of the Councillors, members of staff and children in the West Lothian Courier over the next few weeks.

Nursery staff participated in a numeracy and maths Bathgate cluster training session last week. One of our next steps is to share and swap ideas with our children, parents/carers around early numeracy and maths development.
We have uploaded a file with descriptions and photographs of some of the activities at nursery but would love to discover what children do at home and give these a try at nursery.
Please chat to any of the nursery staff, bring in photographs or email your ideas/photos/videos to Miss Wilkinson eva.wilkinson@westlothian.org.uk for staff to collate them all together and share, with your permission.
As you are aware we use the internet in nursery to support children’s interests. We also continually reinforce the message of online safety using resources from CeOp, NSPCC and the Safer Internet Centre (see previous posts below). We have recently purchased a copy of Penguinpig, a story aimed for children aged 5-7 years with a strong underlying message that we need to think carefully before we trust what we read online. It enforces the message that some people use the Internet to trick others and that, in the event of being uncertain, children should check wit h a trusted adult. If you would like to have a look or borrow this book to read with your older children at home please see Miss Wilkinson.
Have you wondered what we used all our ‘treasures’ that we collected from our outings to Beecraigs Country Park for? After lots of exploratory play with them in nursery we took all the natural resources outside to make pictures with them on the ground. Just like the artist Andy Goldsworthy, we used our natural resources as material to create pieces of art. We used iPads to look on the internet to find out how Andy Goldsworthy uses nature to create his exhibitions. We saved our favorite pieces of his work to the camera roll and used them to help us plan our own natural art.
We then photographed our pieces of work just like he does on the iPads. Our next steps are to share our photographs with our friends and discuss our ideas.
Do you like our giant? We worked together as a team, shared our ideas and designed our giant together.
This is one of the reasons we have no spare socks left but splashing in the puddles is just so much fun!!
