Numeracy and Maths at BEYC

Nursery staff participated in a numeracy and maths Bathgate cluster training session last week.  One of our next steps is to share and swap ideas with our children, parents/carers around early numeracy and maths development.

We have uploaded a file with descriptions and photographs of some of the activities at nursery but would love to discover what children do at home and give these a try at nursery.

Please chat to any of the nursery staff, bring in photographs or email your ideas/photos/videos to Miss Wilkinson eva.wilkinson@westlothian.org.uk for staff to collate them all together and share, with your permission.

Harvest Learning Story so far……..

Last month in nursery in both morning and afternoon sessions, children observed apples falling from the apple trees in the orchard……  produce in the orchard and greenhouse was ready to harvest…… In small groups children visit the orchard to  look, touch, smell and water the fruit trees/plants and vegetables…….. There was lots of interest in ‘The Giant Turnip’ story and ‘Oliver’s Vegetables’ story.

Have a look at our Harvest Learning Story to find out where the children’s interest and ideas have taken us………

Life Cycle Learning – Venus Fly Traps.

Some of the afternoon children were talking about a plant that “eats flies”.  After doing some online research, together we discovered this plant is called a Venus Fly Trap.  As part of our ongoing New Life/planting topic the group of children asked if we could look after a Venus Fly Trap in nursery.  Together we looked on Amazon and found seeds and agreed we could plant the them in nursery and grow one ourselves.  After only one week the plants are starting to grow up through the soil.  We must not water them with tap water but only bottled water or rain water instead.  Tap water contains chemicals that are harmful to this type of plant.  Please come into nursery to have a look at our learning story and at our Venus Fly Traps.

If you would like to try and grow one yourself at home, this is the pack we purchased in nursery Grow Your Own Venus Fly Trap.

Learning Stories

Please remember you can come into nursery to have a look at what the children are learning and how we are supporting their interests.  The New Life topic continues to be very popular, now focusing more on the life cycle of butterflies and plants.  If you are able to help further the children’s learning by sharing your knowledge please speak to any of the staff.  Remember we welcome pieces of work/photographs from home too and will add this to our learning stories.  You can also email information to Miss Wilkinson at eva.wilkinson@westlothian.org.uk

New Life in the Pond.

We spotted frogspawn in our pond yesterday and today we saw three frogs swimming around!  It is hard to see the frogspawn unless the sun is shining on the pond so you need to look very carefully.

Over the next few weeks we will learn about the life cycle of a frog as we see it develop right before our eyes.

Transition PEEP.

Well done to all the boys and girls and their parents/grandparents who are working very hard at our Transition PEEP groups with Miss Gardner this year.  The Transition PEEP group aims to help prepare children for Primary One by focusing on a variety of literacy and numeracy activities, while building confidence and developing concentration and listening skills. This group will continue into the end of the summer term.
