The Royal Highland Show 2015

On Thursday the wraparound children had a fantastic time at the Royal Highland Show.  They enjoyed getting up close with the animals and trying new experiences such a milking a cow, making a candle, tasting fresh honey and yummy treats and milk.  Everyone was very tired when they got back to nursery after having such a busy day and walking so far.  Thank you to our parent/grandparent helpers for making this trip possible.

On Friday in nursery, we tuned into Glow TV to discover even more about the animals on show at Ingliston.

Have a look at our photographs to find out more……

Working hard at Transition PEEP

Well done to all the boys and girls and their parents/grandparents who worked very hard at our Transition PEEP groups this year.  The Transition PEEP group aims to help prepare children for Primary One by focussing on a variety of literacy and numeracy activities, while building confidence and developing concentration and listening skills.

The groups ran on Friday mornings from March to June with sessions focussing on;

  • Getting to know each other
  • Following instructions
  • Working together
  • Playing with stories
  • Having fun with letter sounds
  • Rhyming sounds
  • Environmental print
  • Handling money
  • Recognising progress, praise and PARTY.

Children and parents/grandparents worked very well together through every day and ordinary learning experiences, where children’s efforts and achievements were recognised and valued by giving them praise and encouragement.  The noted increase in the children’s confidence was very noticeable over the months.

Thank you to everyone for the very positive evaluation comments and suggestions for ways to improve future sessions.

BEYC Space Station

We have enjoyed learning all about Space and the Solar System this term.  Our house corner transformed into a ‘space station’, we have been investigating ‘space goo’ and we were also lucky enough to be at nursery during a solar eclipse!

On the 24th of March the afternoon group took part in a Glow meet (video conferencing) with a real astronaut.  Over 100 schools from all over Scotland took part to ask Commander Chris Hadfield questions about his time as a commander of the International Space Station and his two shuttle missions in space.  We were extremely lucky to be selected to ask a question live on the webcam in front of all the other schools.  We all sat at the Smartboard (some of us dressed up in astronaut costumes!) to listen to Commander Hadfield, who called all the way from Mexico.  Our very important question was “Are there aliens in Space?” by Ava aged 3.  Ruby aged 3, very bravely stepped up to the webcam and asked the question on behalf on the nursery.

Thanks again to Jennifer McDougall form Education Scotland who organized another fantastic Glow meet.

Stay Play and Learn

Thank you to all who got involved and supported the children’s learning at Stay, Play and Learn this month.  Have a look at the gallery to see what a fun, busy week we had…..

Fairtrade Fortnight and Comic Relief.

We recently celebrated Fairtrade Fortnight in nursery. A small group of children enjoyed a visit to Scotmid to search for Fairtrade items in the store. We used our vouchers that were kindly donated by Scotmid to buy Fairtrade bananas to use for snack as well as buying Fairtade ingredients to use for baking and smoothies and to make banana splits on our firepit. We also bought a selection of Fairtrade products for prizes for our Fairtrade raffle for parents and staff.  Tom the Manager was very helpful and spoke to the children about Fairtrade and shared Fairtrade chocolate and bananas with them.

Thank you to everyone who bought raffle tickets.  Proceeds will go to Comic Relief. Thanks also to everyone who took part in our Fairtrade competition. We collected lots of Fairtrade packaging which we used in our Fairtrade cafe and shop and also in our art and craft area.

Well done to everyone who dressed in red, wore a ‘funny face’ red nose and donated to Comic Relief 2015.  The total amount raised this year was £73.

Dinosaur Discoveries on Glow TV

On Tuesday, the afternoon group tuned into a live stream on Glow TV to learn about dinosaurs from the Triassic, Jurassic and Cretaceous periods. It was fascinating to look at artefacts from National Museums Scotland, such as dinosaur foot prints, poo and fossils on the Smartboard. We discovered that some dinosaurs walked on two legs and some walked on four legs and did you know a new species of dinosaur with feathers has recently been discovered? How interesting! We had fun taking part in the quizzes, guessing which part of the dinosaur the bones belonged to.  Thank you to Jennifer McDougall from Education Scotland and Sara from National Museums Scotland for organising such an enjoyable event.

Chinese New Year Celebrations

The children have been learning about Chinese  New Year over the last few weeks at nursery and wraparound through a variety of multi-sensory activities. We think everyone will agree tasting Chinese food for a special group snack was the most enjoyable experience!

The wraparound children worked extremely hard to plan and create a fabulous Chinese dragon.  They searched the internet to learn about Chinese dragon dances and put on a super show while we ate our noodles and prawn crackers!

Have  a look at our photos to find out what else we have been doing to learn about  Chinese New Year and celebrate the year of the Sheep ………
