Primary 5 John Muir Award & Blog

In P5 we have been working really hard towards our John Muir Award. We have created a blog to share our experiences and learning. Our blog is helping us to meet the ‘share’ aspect of our John Muir Award. Take a look here!

New “Selfie Cop” App

We recently received information about this app from West Lothian’s Child Protection team (see below).  It might be something which our parent body would find useful.  As social media continues to be a major influence on our young people, it may be a useful tool to encourage positive habits around sharing images.

Selfie Cop is an app that can be installed on the phones/tablets of children (targeted at 8-13 year olds) and their parents to help children learn to think more about images they share.  Every time the camera is activated on the phone/tablet, SelfieCop pops up and asks the child if they are sure about sharing this image – the image will also be available for the parent carer to view.  The app is installed with the child’s awareness and permission – it’s not about spying on their activity, it’s about trying to instill good habits around thinking twice before sharing images.

Multiplication Strategies!

Take a look at some of our strategies for multiplication!

Olivia is teaching us how to multiply larger numbers using partitioning. We use partitioning all the time to break up numbers into thousands, hundreds, tens and units to make them easier for us to work with!

Multiplication and Divison Strategies

We have been working with multiplication and division recently in Primary 5. The children have been encouraged to learn different strategies and use whatever works best for them! I will upload some more videos and Vittles made by pupils for everyone to see at home if they need a little reminder or want to show their families what we have been up to in maths!

Here is a good little video explaining what is actually happening when we divide a three digit number using the long division algorithm. Rather than just learning the process by heart we have used diagrams and base ten blocks to really understand how we are using place value and breaking up the number.

P7 Risk Factory Visit

Yesterday P7 visited the Risk Factory in Edinburgh as part of their Health and Wellbeing lessons and everyone had a very enjoyable and educational time.  The Risk Factory is a way to experience scenarios involving danger but in a controlled and risk-free way.

As classes visit every year, we can’t say too much but P7 have hopefully learned from their mistakes at Granny’s Flat and will know the Fire Service’s advice of what to do in a fire when they visit our classes later this year.

We received compliments from the volunteers at the Risk Factory about the pupils excellent behaviour, so once again they have done St. John Ogilvie Primary proud.

P7 January Update

IMG_1362 IMG_1363 IMG_1366 IMG_1367 IMG_1370

January has been a busy month for P7, getting ready for our show and the first visits to St. Margaret’s Academy as part of our transition from Primary to Secondary school!

The theme this year is Rights Respecting Schools and at St. Margaret’s we have enjoyed History lessons which have been on World War Two.

We have learned about life for Jewish people under the Nazi party and how their rights were removed and about incredible people like Anne Frank and Sir Nicholas Winton.

This has only been our first step towards high school but we all did very well and did St. John Ogilvie Primary proud.

There are some pictures to follow.

P1S January 2016

In literacy we have started to learn the new sounds for Block 2, we are showing lots of confidence in making words on our magnetic boards.  In the morning we are all eager to write lots of words on our whiteboards and some of us are even beginning to write sentences.  As part of our literacy work we are putting sentences in the correct order.  We know the word with the capital letter comes at the beginning and the word with the full stop is at the end.  We need to make sure the sentence makes sense!  Sometimes Miss Stebbing gets muddled up and we have to help her.  In writing we are using our sounds and finger spaces correctly.  We have written instructions for putting on a space suit, made a list of ten things we would take to space and we wrote about a scripture reading we heard in RE called The Widow’s Mite.  Miss Stebbing chose some star writers and they got to share their writing with the other classes.  We have been learning Scots words using the Gruffalo and the Graffalo’s Wean to help us.  Ask us all the new words we have learned.

In maths we are still practising our counting to 20 (forwards and backwards) and making sure we are writing the numbers the right way round.  We have been looking at numbers before and after and also using the words more and fewer when comparing two numbers.  We have learned the number words to ten and we will keep practising these to become even more confident.  As part of our work on addition we have been using a special adding machine.  We also know different words for add.

In health and wellbeing we have been learning about the needs of a baby.  We were very lucky to have a visit from Alex’s mum and his baby sister.  We got to ask lots of questions and see what she needs to keep her healthy.  We have enjoyed looking after the dolls in the house corner.  In PE we are learning new skills in gymnastics and we have enjoyed using the ‘big’ equipment to show our new skills.

In science we have been learning about how toys work and we sorted them into groups using the words ‘push’, ‘pull’ and ‘twist’.

Our new topic is all about space and we are all very excited about this topic.  We have a space station in our classroom, complete with astronaut costumes.  We learned all about rocket launches and the different parts of a space suit.  We have watched videos of Tim Peake from his twitter page and made beautiful planet artwork when we had to blend using the chalk pastels.

There are some technical difficulties when uploading photographs so these will be added when it is all sorted out.

P3E January Update

The boys and girls in Primary 3E have been very busy since coming back after Christmas!  We have begun learning about a new topic called “The Swinging Sixties”.  We have learned about the clothes that people wore in the 1960s, and about some important events which took place during the decade.  We made a short powerpoint to share these facts and the children were very keen to add animations! We enjoyed a visit from West Lothian Library Services who brought in some 1960s toys for us to look at.

In Literacy, we looked at some Scottish poems to celebrate Burns Night.  We had great fun trying to say some of the Scots words!  We have been working hard to learn spelling patterns and we have been putting in extra effort to our joined up handwriting to get ready for Primary 4!

In Numeracy, we have been learning about addition and are moving onto 2 digit plus 2 digit sums.  We have also been learning about time.  We will be moving on to learning about quarter past and quarter to in February.

We will keep you updated with what we are learning throughout the term and will include some photographs in our next post!

P1D Learn How to Take Care of a Baby

Primary One have been learning about how to take care of a baby as part of this term’s Health and Well Being curriculum.  The children have engaged in role play to test bath water, feed the baby (doll), sing to it and rock it to sleep.  We were very luck to welcome a real life baby, Alex from P1S little sister and mum, who spoke to us about how she takes care of her baby.  The children asked very interesting questions to learn more.  They were as follows:

‘How do you put a nappy on a baby?’  – Aryaman

‘What type of food do you give the baby?’ –Luke

‘How do you put clothes on the baby?’ – Caoimhe

‘Do you sing songs to get the baby to sleep?’ – Lauren

‘How do you know if the baby is pooping?’ –Niamh

‘Do babies play?’ – Lena

‘How do you feed a baby?’ –Dee

‘How do you put shoes on a baby?’ –Ava

We look forward to continuing this interesting learning, especially as we take part in a ‘Guess the Baby’ game.  Please look out for a baby photo request in your child’s diary next week.  Plus, we are going to make real bottles for ‘capacity’ lessons in maths and take part in a listening and talking opportunity called, ‘When I was a Baby’.  Very exciting!
