P5 Trip to Bannockburn

Primary 5 visited  Bannockburn Visitor Centre to learn more about their topic on the Scottish Wars of Independence.  They had a very interactive session to begin with where we headed to the battle room to learn more about the Scottish and English armies: where they camped and where they attacked from.  Our very own Bruce and Edward were cheered on by their armies.  After this we headed into the main battle where we felt like part of the army.   We then headed outside to visit Bruce’s monument and find out more about the schiltron and how the Scottish army used this in battle.

After lunch, we finished with a weapons handling workshop where we also tried on various replicas of the uniform that the soldiers would have worn. We dressed our very own knight, infantry soldier and archer ready for battle.

We had a fantastic day and the curator was really impressed with the learning we shared.

What a fabulous last week of term 1 in P3!

In Primary three we have worked our socks off this week and have had masses of fun incorporated!

We started off our week joining the primary sevens, actively listening to their fabulous rainforest presentations and we all did a fantastic job of meeting targets in both listening and talking.

A huge well done to all of the primary sevens and a great big thank you to Miss Lynch and Mrs Doohan for letting us join them!

We also had a fabulous fun filled day on Thursday, when we focused the learning around Disney’s A Bug’s Life movie as a themed day for the end of our IDL habitats topic.

We made symmetrical bugs, used IPads for research and recorded our facts, answered questions relating to an ant comprehension, built new ant colonies, designed new minibeast mansions, made tessellation patterns, created a new gadget that would help the ants and we even became ants ourselves following a map to get through the colony and deliver food to the Queen 👸. It was great fun and we all loved it!

We now can’t wait for term 2 to begin but first we need a well earned rest!

Enjoy the October break and stay posted for more P3 highlights on our return 😀

Term 1 in P2-1

What a fantastic first term we have had in P2/1!

We have been learning lots of new sounds, learning how to form our letters and blend sounds we know together to read words. In our writing lessons, we have been learning how to write a recount and how to write a persuasive text, arguing one side of an argument. We have been trying really hard to use our sight words and our new sounds in all of our writing. Sid the monkey was helping us with our writing, he thought we were fantastic!

We have been focussing on friendships and kindness this term in our Health and Wellbeing. We discussed what makes a good friend and what we can do to show our friends kindness. We have also been learning how to recognise, name and show our emotions, describe what triggers different emotions and how we react to various situations. We learned our bodies are like cogs and they all need to work together for us to be healthy and safe. We created our own ‘coggles’ to use when we are reading books so we can spot emotion words.

Mrs Howley is extremely proud of all our hard work this term and said we deserve a lovely October break.

What a year P1G!

And just like that, it’s June…and we have finished Primary one!

Look what we have been getting up to this term!

Numeracy- This term in numeracy, we focused on practicing all that we had learnt this year and pushing ourselves to try even trickier sums!

Literacy- In literacy this term, we finished off learning all of our sounds and put these into practice during our writing lessons.

Beyond Number- In maths this term, we learnt about lines of symmetry. We painted our butterflies, folded them in half and watched how the prints were symmetrical. We also used mirrors to show lines of symmetry. We also learnt all about directions and I thought it was the best time to teach the children one of my school disco classics ‘The Cha Cha slide’. They absolutely loved it!

In technologies, Ms Jamieson was teaching us all about designing and building a village so we spent some time building a bridge to go over our river!

Our topic this term was Kings, Queens and Castles (we also looked at dragons!). We planned our own royal banquet, we learnt about all the features of a castle and used the wooden blocks to build our own!

Our topic in science was all about our senses. We went on a hearing walk to see what we could hear all throughout the school. We completed an obstacle course to show how important our eyesight is.

We spent a lot of time outside practicing our basketball skills in PE, completing a school litter pick and learning how to keep ourselves safe in Health and wellbeing.

I am so proud of all your achievements this year Primary one. I hope you all have a lovely well-deserved summer holiday! I would also like to say a huge ‘Thank You’ for all the lovely cards and gifts.

Term 3 in P1!

Another fantastic term in P1!

Numeracy – We have been working on our addition and subtraction strategies. We have been using number lines to help us find the answers to a calculation and practiced writing our own number sentences. We had lots of fun pretending we were frogs jumping forwards and backwards on the lily pads and counting the jumps. We have also been learning to tell the time on an analogue clock using o’clock and half past the hour.

Literacy – We have been learning some new sounds and new sight words, which has helped us recognise and read new words. We have been discussing how we make our writing more interesting by adding adjectives. We focussed on writing imaginative stories using descriptive words to describe a character. Mrs Howley and Miss Gorman were very impressed with our work.

Science – This term we learned about forces. We identified things you can push and pull in our classrooms and had great fun making ramps at various heights to determine if this made a difference to the distance when we pushed our cars down them. We also looked discussed what ‘prediction’ means and enjoyed carrying out an experiment and predicting what items we thought would float and what items would sink.

Topic –Our topic this term was The Village. We learnt all about our village and then learnt about Scotland! We found out about Nessie- Look at our lovely artwork! We  found out all about the Scottish wildlife like red squirrels. We also spoke about our favourite Scottish food and whether there was any Scottish food we hadn’t tried that sounded yummy!

PE – This term in PE, we were practicing our football skills. We were learning all about controlling the ball, dribbling and passing. We also had a go at shooting the ball for Miss Gorman and Mrs Howley to try and save!

RME- In RME this term, we have been learning about birth customs in different religions. We also were learning about the Easter story. We made some fantastic bunny hats and Easter cards for our people at home!

We hope you have a lovely Easter holiday!

Mrs Howley and Miss Gorman

Primary one learning!

We have had a great first week back in person in P1! It was so good to see all our friends and teachers again.

In Numeracy, We enjoyed making our own pizzas in our fractions lesson and picking our favourite toppings. We were identifying halves and quarters of an amount and sharing items equally. Miss Gorman’s class enjoyed creating paper plate cakes and practicing sharing.

In literacy, we enjoyed lots of activities using our new sounds ‘ee’, ‘oo’, ‘l’ and ‘r’. We identified these sounds in words, made our own words using the new sounds and enjoyed working with a partner to play the literacy games.

In Health and Wellbeing, we discussed the food groups and identified healthy and not so healthy foods. We worked in groups to create plates of the foods we should eat all the time, sometimes, and only a little of the time. This activity made us all very hungry!

Mrs Howley’s class enjoyed a ‘Senses Scavenger Hunt’. We discussed our five senses and used this to find things we could see, hear, touch, taste and smell in our playground and in the classroom.

We learned all about Fairtrade on Friday and how we can help the farmers get a fair price for their goods. We looked at the Fairtrade symbol and the foods that we might find in our supermarkets that support this. We made our own Fairtrade lunch boxes.

Hope you have a lovely weekend and can’t wait to see you all on Monday!

Mrs Howley and Miss Gorman.

P2 Snowflakes, Reindeer and Signing!

We’ve had a busy last week in P2!

We watched an excerpt of The Snawman, read by Matthew Fitt who translated the original Raymond Brigg’s story into Scots and then took part in a draw-a-long with author/illustrator Benji Davies. The illustration was taken from his book The Snowflake and was really quite challenging. However, the finished illustrations turned out beautifully! It’s well worth zooming in to see the detail.

We also made some fantastic Rudolph hats to watch our Christmas movie in.

And finally, P2 have been learning to sign We Wish You a Merry Christmas. Click on the link to watch us in action!

Wishing you all a merry Christmas and very best wishes for 2021!
