Maths Week Scotland 27th September – 3rd October

Falla Hill Primary had great fun exploring different mathematical concepts and linking this with other cross-curricular areas during Maths Week Scotland from 27th September until 3rd October 2021. Here is a short summary of some activities that the children took part in across the school.

Primary Two/One – a note from Mrs Howley

During Maths Week Scotland, Primary Two/One took part in a number of different activities linking maths and numeracy.

In data analysis, the children observed the traffic outside and recorded their findings using tally marks.

Focusing on symmetry, the children created their own colourful bugs making sure both sides were symmetrical.

Investigating time, the children had great fun timing each other with the stopwatches doing various activities.

Primary Two/Three – A note from Ms Rainey

During Maths Week Scotland, Primary Two/Three took part in a number of different activities linking maths to other curricular areas.

In numeracy, the children made place value robots.

Linking to literacy, the children read the story of ‘The Very Hungry Caterpillar’ by Eric Carle, focusing on capital letters and the ay sound. They then linked numeracy/maths by ordering the days of the week.

In our topic, the children read ‘What the Ladybird Heard’ by Julia Donaldson and used the robbers’ map as inspiration to make a map of their journey to school. They used the maps to describe what they saw, using positional language.

Primary Three – A note from Mrs Hunter

Primary Three had a great time in numeracy and maths during Maths Week Scotland, taking part in lots of different activities and using different skills.

Linking maths to our IDL topic focusing on habitats, the children produced fantastic symmetrical scorpions from their desert habitat work.

We took part in the WL Sumdog competition and had great fun playing the games and learning how to navigate around this platform.

Using ICT games on the Smartboard during our rotation work, allowed us to play collaboratively, to complete a number of different games focusing on lots of addition and subtraction skills.

Place value ice cream parlour – We created a fabulous ice cream cone focusing on place value matching the numeral to the number of hundreds, tens and ones, the word and the abstract calculation.

Addition fill – We had a fabulous time filling the playground with addition sums and running around trying to add in the answer to each other’s questions. It was exhausting but we had a great time!

Primary Seven – A note from Miss Lynch

Primary seven incorporated Maths Week Scotland into their smart start and in lessons. Their class discussion each day was math themed – one riddle attached and one weird fact. They also discussed the strategies they would use and what the probability of the lottery win might have been.

Attached are some of the children’s artwork focusing on pattern and number. Some of the daily slides are attached too.

As you can see, everyone had a fabulous week with lots of learning taking place across many numeracy and mathematics outcomes. Great work from all!

What a fabulous last week of term 1 in P3!

In Primary three we have worked our socks off this week and have had masses of fun incorporated!

We started off our week joining the primary sevens, actively listening to their fabulous rainforest presentations and we all did a fantastic job of meeting targets in both listening and talking.

A huge well done to all of the primary sevens and a great big thank you to Miss Lynch and Mrs Doohan for letting us join them!

We also had a fabulous fun filled day on Thursday, when we focused the learning around Disney’s A Bug’s Life movie as a themed day for the end of our IDL habitats topic.

We made symmetrical bugs, used IPads for research and recorded our facts, answered questions relating to an ant comprehension, built new ant colonies, designed new minibeast mansions, made tessellation patterns, created a new gadget that would help the ants and we even became ants ourselves following a map to get through the colony and deliver food to the Queen 👸. It was great fun and we all loved it!

We now can’t wait for term 2 to begin but first we need a well earned rest!

Enjoy the October break and stay posted for more P3 highlights on our return 😀

Busy, busy, busy in P3!

Over the last six weeks, primary three have made a super start to the new term.

In the first two weeks, they started off the new session looking at the story of The Little Iceberg by Nicky Murray and explored many different cross curricular areas to really understand the themes of hope, friendship and belonging. Lots of fantastic work was produced and a fabulous display in the main corridor of the school was created.

In numeracy, along with SEAL activities, they have been focusing on place value and in maths they have been looking at collecting, sorting and displaying information. The children have all worked exceptionally hard to understand the value of digits within two and three digit numbers and have used concrete, pictorial and abstract forms to show their understanding in different ways. Graphs have been produced for both favourite colours and their favourite Julia Donaldson books and independent work was very impressive.

In science, everyone had great fun showing the different phases of the moon with Oreo cookies and it was an added bonus when everyone got an extra snack when they were finished 😀 The children all did a fabulous job and were very proud of their work within their teams.

In IDL, habitats has been our focus since our return and the children have been outside looking at our local environment identifying habitats within and out-with the school grounds. They have also explored the polar regions and the rainforest habitats, identifying animals found in each while discussing similarities and differences. A challenge was also given to produce a habitat for a selected animal and each group gave fabulous results using a shoebox as their prop. We even ended up with a fairytale castle as a habitat for a dragon!

Their writing has focused on the recount genre so far and a wonderful recount of the Three Little Pigs was turned into a newspaper report. The children are now working on a persuasive piece of writing, trying to encourage others to stop plastic pollution in our ocean habitats. So far I have been very impressed with their knowledge and great ideas 💡

It is now only two weeks until term 1 is over and I cannot believe how many wonderful things the children have produced in such a short time. We look forward to sharing other learning with you soon! Stay posted for more.

P7 Term 2: Sharing the Learning

Well I cannot believe that we are already in November and the speed at which Christmas is approaching while the weeks disappear is scaring me a little!

The children however, do not seem phased and are all working their socks off having made a fantastic start to the work that we are focusing on this term already. 🙂

For example they have already written fabulous persuasive pieces of writing and they have all been providing detailed answers to calculations involving addition, subtraction, multiplication and division.

I am sure they will continue to work hard for the remaining time in term two and we are lucky this term that we have Miss Thorpe working with us, allowing the children to have double input.

Here is an overview of what term two will look like in P7.

Stay safe

Maths Week Scotland 2020

28 September 2020 – 4 October 2020

During Maths Week Scotland we were all very busy with a variety of different maths and numeracy activities. The children all had fun expanding on their mathematical knowledge and they enjoyed the challenge and the fun of learning both indoors and outdoors.

Primary One went hunting outdoors for natural materials to make a Gruffalo Pie and Owl Ice-cream. They used their fabulous counting skills to collect all of the ingredients and mixed them together to make their creations. What fantastic links to both Literacy and Numeracy in one activity 🙂

In primary six, they focused on an assortment of numeracy activities every morning in their Smart Start time and Miss Lynch really gave their brains a workout with questions of the day focused on Maths and Numeracy.

All of the P6 children  also took part in the Maths Week Scotland Sumdog competition and were very pleased with their knowledge, efforts and positive attitude.

In primary seven, they have been researching and comparing Scotland with Japan in their interdisciplinary topic this term, so they were excited when they had the opportunity to take part in a Maths Week Scotland origami session focusing on 3D shapes and their properties. Lots of other schools joined in with this live session and all of the children had a great time trying to create their own Jackson Cubes using the Japanese art of paper folding. Some of the children also tried a hexahedron.

If you would like to try it for yourself then you can copy the link below:

Each year the main aim of Maths Week Scotland is to celebrate the importance of maths in our everyday lives.

Over the week, lots of maths related themes and activities were shared across all levels from nursery to primary seven and we hope that by engaging the children in these activities, we can inspire a more positive attitude towards maths!

Future mathematicians in the making………. we will wait and see 🙂

What will we be learning this term in P7?

Primary Seven have made a fantastic start to the new session and all of the children have settled in well to new routines. They have been very busy working on several Health and Wellbeing topics already and I am sure they will continue to shine whilst working on all areas of the curriculum.

Attached is a copy of what we will be focusing on in term 1 and I’m sure they will love sharing their learning with you.
