Pet Crazy in P4l

Hello Everyone

P4l were very pleased to welcome Emma from the SSPCA in to class on Monday.  Emma talked to us about caring for pets and how important it is for people to be prepared before they get a pet.  She also spoke to us about some sad cases where animals had not been looked after but thankfully the SSPCA stepped in and rescued the animals nursing them back to health.

Well done to Mhairi for her excellent performance at Balbardies Got Stars in Their Eyes.

Comments from our Review Jotters

This week we were reviewing things that we found tricky.

I found handwriting tricky because it was hard to join the letters neatly. Lily

Handwriting was tricky because the joins were new to me. Eve

This week we found our reading task tricky because we were writing diary entries as characters from our books and it was hard because we did’t know what it is like being someone else. Ava and Rachel

I found maths tricky as it was hard working out the right change from £1. Anais

P.E was tricky because we were climbing and the wall had very little hand and foot grips. Catherine

This week l found it tricky in maths to give change from £1 and £2. Lucy

Bye for now P4l

Making Bread in Primary2/1

What a busy week we have had in class!  We were very excited to see that our beans started to grow over the weekend and we will keep you posted…

This week our story was The Little Red Hen so on Monday morning we made our own bread.  We were very proud of ourselves.

We tried really hard to spread the butter and jam by ourselves.

“I loved it,” said Kelsey.  “It was delicious,” said Sam.  “I was astonished when I saw how good it was,” said Tom.

In art, we painted pictures of the cat, rat, pig and the hen.  We then made models of pigs out of pink play-do with a partner.

We all agree that it is better when we help each other and work together like the Little Red Hen had tried to do!

SSPCA Workshop

This week p3lm started their Farm topic. We decided to make our own farm characters to help “Farmer Jim”  on the farm. We have had great fun  discussing who would help on the farm, how they would help and what they would wear while working on a muddy, dirty farm.  It was great as this tied in with our SSPCA workshop where we learned about looking after and protecting animals and who to call if we needed help with an animal! Mrs Mitchell hopes that the parents and children in p3lm are enjoying the talk talk homework. Let me know your thoughts!

P1b’s Pirate Party!

Last week, to conclude our Treasure island topic, we had a pirate party! During this we used icing pens to make bug biscuits and had the opportunity to taste a pirate drink.  We also dressed up and played pin the eye patch on the pirate.  Aaron and Arran both won ten points for their house!  In the gym hall, we played corners, completed a pirate obstacle course and played port and starboard. We really enjoyed our topic this term and look forward to beginning our Gardener’s World topic.

Big Balbardie Blether 3

This morning we all took part in Big Balbardie Blether 3 where we discussed learning out of school and homework.  All of the teachers shared the learning which they do out of school with their groups.  Miss Henderson showed the children about what she learns at Zumba and everyone got a chance to do a Zumba dance to a Little Mix song, Miss Goff showed everyone how she learns badminton out of school and Mr Jeffries shared his learning in baseball with everyone.  We then had the chance to see the Draft Home Learning Policy and feedback on what our thoughts were on this.  The feedback so far has been very positive and the Home Learning Group are already putting into action some of the points raised.  We really did enjoy hearing about our teachers learning out of school.

Stop the Clock!

We have started our new maths topic and have enjoyed learning about time this week.

The boys in class 1 are already fantastic at checking their class and individual timetables.  We can all explain what is first, what is next and what is last on our timetables.

Every morning we say what day it was yesterday, what day it is today and what day it will be tomorrow.  We enjoy taking turns to write the date on the class calendar.  We like to look at our weekly and monthly timetable.  We can explain and show when key events are taking place.  We have noticed that it is Jayden’s birthday soon; we can’t wait to have a party in class 1!  We also enjoy singing our days of the week song and can sequence the days of the week into the correct order.

The boys in class 1 use a range of devices to help keep track of time such as sand timers and time timers.  This week we have been looking at analogue clocks.

“The class clock is a circle shape.”  Cameron

“Tick, tick, tick, tick, tick.”  Jayden

We can demonstrate the direction that the clock hands turn, and are beginning to recognise the minute, hour and second hand.  We made our own clocks by sticking the numbers in the correct order.

We have used our clocks to play fun time games in class 1.  We can set our clocks to ‘on the hour’ times and say ‘o’clock’ when telling the time.

Our favourite time game is called ‘Stop the Clock’.  We have to be very fast to match the time to the correct clock face and then press stop the clock.  We like to shout out ‘STOP THE CLOCK!’ when we have finished the game.  We are very good at praising our friends when they have completed the game.  Lewis even chose to play this game for Golden Time!

Cody has investigated how many seconds are in 1 minute.  Cody completed some 1 minute time challenges this week.

“I can make a cube tower with 33 cubes in 1 minute!”  Cody

“I can write my name 7 times in 1 minute!” Cody

P2lg news

We have had a very busy first week back. We started our new topic of Houses and Homes. We listened to the story of  The Three Little Pigs and then we had the Big Bad Wolf challenge of making a house with a partner that the wolf couldn’t blow down. We had a choice of 4 different materials to use to build the house with.  Some groups did manage to make houses that could not be blown down by the wolf (or Mrs Waddell’s hairdyrer as it really was!). Mrs Gallagher was impressed with our efforts. We also learned about the different types of houses and we are busy preparing for some talking and writing activities about our own houses.

On Wednesday we had our class trip to Craigmillar castle. Despite the weather we had a great day. We loved being shown round the castle by our guides from Castleview Primary school. Lots of us enjoyed the game they played with us but the best part for most of the class was hearing the story of the mysterious skeleton that was discovered bricked up inside the castle walls 200 years ago. The guides asked us to think about what could have happened to the skeleton and we wrote letters back to them explaining what we thought. Some of our ideas were very imaginative.

First week back for P2pg!

We had a great week this week.  On Monday we took time to draw holiday pictures and share our news with each other!  Some of us had been away, some of us had been ill and some of us stayed at home – but still had lots of fun and a good break.

Wednesday was our castle trip and we all had a great time.  We liked everything about the castle, from the curtain walls, round lookout towers, tower house (keep), Great Hall, staircases, murder holes, battlements and even the dungeon!  We saw where the people lived and got a better good idea of how the people lived in the castle from the guides that took us round – they were great!

Here we are outside the castle meeting the guides.  Then inside the castle, listening to them tell us about the people who lived in the castle, just before we played a game!

It was a really great day.

Well done P2pg.

P4a

This week we have started our new Math topic. We looked at time and the different dimensions of time! In writing we are going to be looking at comics and how they work. We have already started this and Erin H brought in comics for us to look at. (Thank you Erin!) We are loving our Health and Wellbeing topic and this week we looked at ‘Cool Body Language’. This is helping us to realise how we can and should act. It is also helping us to realise how other people are feeling and how we can help them. A busy week already ended.

Have a great weekend

Being Cool in P4l

This week in P4l   in our Being Cool in School work we looked at body language.  We learned about what it is and how people show weak, cool and aggressive types of body language.  We are really enjoying using this resource and it is helping us to think of ‘cool’ responses in our behaviour.  In maths we have all been learning about money, looking at calculating amounts and change. We all got new reading books and lots of us have read some already.  In writing we wrote about our personal thoughts on either ‘The Best Day Ever’ or ‘My Dream Day’.  Mrs Leamy is very pround of the progress everyone is making.

Hope everyone has a good weekend.

Bye for now.

Our week in P7b – Fri 19th April

What have we been learning this week?

Kyle – I enjoyed learning to sketch. I had to make my animal as realistic as possible and go step by step. My animal was a red eyed tree frog.

Ramie -In our elective the drama group were learning how to put our own make-up on. It’s really difficult to do on your own so get someone to help.

Sian – I was in the drama group as well and we learned how to put face paint on and my tip would be to really concentrate when doing it.

Aisha – In the Masterchef elective I learned how to make banoffee pie. We put banana on top of ours but you could actually put any fruit on top.

Murray – I learned about the three different types of fraction which are proper, improper and mixed fraction.

Ross – I enjoyed learning how to convert from one type of fraction to another and how to add fractions this week.

Billie – During Keeping Myself Safe, I learned that if someone you don’t know does something to make you uncomfortable you should try and make sharp exit.

Who has impressed?

Lyndsay – Amber has impressed me by working hard and completing the Amazon Challenge.

Kirstie – Kyle and Ramie have done really well to reach the final of Stars in their Eyes.

Connor – John has impressed me with his animal sketching. He created a sketch of a wolf spider.

John – Craig C has impressed me by  working hard to catch up on the fractions work he had missed.

Ramie – Abbie Madden has impressed by trying really hard with her audition  and getting the part of the Artful Dodger.

Kyle – John has impressed me by beating everybody else at the Fractions Table Toppers game.

Murray – Amber impressed at swimming by being the only person to get moved up a group.

Mr Berginis – A special well done to Amber on being the second person to complete the Amazon Challenge. Well done! 🙂

Primary 5a

This week we took part in an art lesson with Mrs Clark. We looked at a cross-section of fruit and vegetables and then used chalk and crayon to create an effect.

The whole school took part in the third Big Balbardie Blether, which was on the topic of Home Learning. Most of us had a good time and came up with lots of great comments.

Earlier in the week six pupils from Primary 5a delivered a lesson to parents! At the AAL evening Lewis, Melissa, Andrew, Caitlin, Jason and Nathan taught a group of parents about extinction. Everyone who took part had a great time!

Have a nice weekend,

Miss Anderson and P5a

We’re Sailing Down the River Nile!

P3LM have been working hard this week preparing for our ‘Ancient Egypt’ assembly on Friday 26th April 2013.
We have been learning a new song to perform with cool dance moves, thanks to Polina!
We have also been working hard to learn our lines and be clear, loud and confident for our audience.
We can’t wait to share our learning, we hope you can make it along to see us.
From, P3LM

Once upon a time…in Primary 2/1

This week we received some wonderful surprises from Miss Henderson!  We now have a rainbow coloured rug in our library and a magic cusion.  The magic cushion looks like a gigantic ladybird but it has a special secret… If you look inside there are lots and lots of baby ladybird cushions.  We love the new things for our library – thank you Miss Henderson!

Logan brought in a Buzz Lightyear cushion from home for us to use in our library so we’d like to say a big thank you to Logan’s family too!

We love reading books in our new library area!

At the end of last term Ziggy and Zaggy gave us lots of traditional tales and this week we read Jack and the Beanstalk.  We have been very busy in class and have made a giant beanstalk for our library corner which goes all the way to the ceiling.  We also planted beans and we are having a competition in class to see whose beanstalk will grow the tallest.  We also planted a bean to look after at home.  Please remember to water your beans every day and put them near sunlight.

Easter Praise!

Thank you to everyone who joined us at the High Church this afternoon to celebrate Easter with us.  The children all took part in, Easter Praise which told the story of Easter.  Well done to our strings performers and to all of the actors in the play.

Everyone at Balbardie would like to wish all of our families and friends a very Happy Easter and wonderful holiday.  We hope that the sun will come out for at least some part of it!

Easter Crafts

The boys in class 1 have had a fun filled week.  We have been busy creating some lovely Easter crafts to take home as a gift for our parents.  Miss Barrie and Mr Marsden are very happy as the boys have been listening carefully to the instructions for how to make the Easter gifts.  The careful listening is evident in these beautiful Easter Bunnies.

At maths time we have been working on Pattern. We can copy, continue and create our own repeated patterns.  We even went outside to see if we could spot some patterns.  Cody noticed that the pencil fence has a colour pattern.  Cameron noticed the basketball which has a repeated pattern of white, blue and red and Jayden spotted some curtains with red and white stripes.

On Wednesday we went on an Easter egg hunt in the Sensory Room!  The Sensory Room looked like a beautiful spring day.  We hunted through the grass and giant flowers to find the eggs.  We had to find all of the Easter eggs then sort them into matching pairs.  It was great fun!

We made some Happy Easter cards using a repeated colour pattern.

“Bend a straight line for the card.  Cut a big circle shape like an egg shape.  Then you glue the patterns inside the card.”  Cody

“You choose the colours that you like.  You give it to someone to say thank you or happy Easter.”  Cameron

Here we are with our special Easter gifts.  We hope that our parents enjoy looking at our wonderful work.

Included in the gift basket is an April calendar and some paper to note down some of the things you have been doing over the holidays.   Miss Barrie and Mr Marsden are looking forward to hearing all about your Easter activities!  Have a lovely Holiday!

Primary 2/1 The Final Clue!

Our final clue arrived on Monday morning. There were 25 pieces of jigsaw that we had to join together to make a giant egg. On the egg was 6 numbers and the box had a combination lock on it. We had to figure out the code to open the box. Abbie guessed the right code – well done Abbie!

Inside the box was a collection of fairy tales for us to enjoy next term.

We were all happy to hear that Ziggy and Zaggy will be staying with us in class.

Red Nose Day Success!

On Friday 15th March 2013 we organised events for Red Nose Day 2013, including a Bake Sale, Dress Up/Down or Wear Something Red and selling Red Noses.  Everyone entered into the spirit of the day and had a lots of fun raising money for people who don’t have as much as we do.  We would like to say a massive thank you to everyone who made cakes, helped to run the Bake Sale, sold Red Noses and who took part in the day.  We are very proud and pleased to say that we raised an incredible £1079.19.

Alice reviews

We were all very proud of our Alice performances; we hope you enjoyed coming to watch too.  In class we have written a review of the show, please come and see all of them.  This is the review by Nathan and Kenneth.

Alice the Musical – “Come and swap seats with the Mad Hatter” Balbardie Primary School is proud to present the Primary 6 production of Alice the Musical.  With record sales it is the best show ever.

Alice falls down a rabbit hole into a hall.  She must get through a tiny door to a beautiful garden.  Things get curiouser as she travels through Wonderland meeting lots of different characters.

They thought:

*Excellent acting from Alice supported by a fantastic cast.

*Tricky dance routines added excitement to the show.

*The costumes were good and made the show colourful.

For both of them, they felt that their confidence increased and they would encourage younger children to have a go!
