Primary 1g Illustrators

On Tuesday, Primary 1g worked with Miss Henderson on extending their skills in being book illustrators.  They started with a discussion about the Percy the Park Keeper stories and what the front cover picture told you about the title of each of the books.  They were given a blank book front cover with the title, The Hedgehog’s Balloon by Nick Bitterworth and had to become the illustrator of the front cover.  Everyone did really well and produced some lovely front covers.  Here are some examples of our work:

Outdoor fun in the sun!

P3lm have been learning about Division in maths this week. They have been learning the basic concept and enjoying learning the Division rap which goes with the x tables raps we have been learning. It has been such lovely weather, we took our Division lesson outdoors and enjoyed some fun in the sun. We were playing the Division game which meant we had to apply the taught strategies very quickly to get the answer and then run and find the hoop with the correct answer in it! Everyone did really well and enjoyed the fresh air and the Division competition. Well done everyone!

Buddies!

We have had a busy afternoon with the Primary 1 to make models and masks of mini-beasts for their assembly.  Some of the models using junk, plasticine and drew pictures.  We used lots of different to decorate out models.  We helped the primary 1 to use non-fiction books to find out facts, we read and the primary 1’s had to summarise.  This is what they said….

  • We learned how many legs a spider has.
  • Butterflies have lots of colours.
  • Caterpillars turn into butterflies.
  • We wrote questions about mini-beasts on a big leaf.
  • We learned facts about the mini-beasts so we can tell people at our assembly.  Our P6 buddies helped us.

Daniel M and Jessica were very impressed with Jake’s bumble bee.

BATHGATE PROCESSION POTTED SPORTS 2013

On Monday evening, a team of primary 7 pupils represented the school at the annual Potted Sports competition at Bathgate Sports Centre.

They took part in a range of different challenges such as dribbling, shooting, and passing across twelve different events.

The girls team was: Aisha Adam, Amber Jackson, Abbie Megaughin, Abbie Madden, Shannon Butler and Sophie McMichael.

The boys team was: Cameron Arnott, Cameron Bowsfield. Craig Cherry, Adam Cherry, Henry Forehand and Kyle Morrison.

Mr Welsh, Miss McDougall and I all attended the event and were very proud of the excellent teamwork, effort and behaviour shown by all of our team members. Well done!

Congratulations go to Windyknowe Primary who were the winning school.

The Case of the Toad Teacher and Others

This week in Class 3 we had planned to go to the library. Unfortunately  we could not go because Miss Waddell was ill. We hope to go next week instead. We all like to go to the library and to choose our own books. Geordie likes books about cars and Josh likes books about dinosaurs and dragons. We hope there are lots of books on these subjects when we visit the library next week. We have started filling out the correct forms so we can have our own library card. On the form we need to fill in our names, address and school.

We made more fun food  pictures this week  using different fruits including a pineapple. We made a character called Pretty Pineapple  and an eggplant which we named Exhausted Eggplant (eggplants can also be called aubergines). In our picture Exhausted Eggplant had just finished a running  race. The race was won by Proud Plum who was given a medal!

This week  our Star Writer slot was a little bit different as we didn’t write instructions to make anything. Instead we had to think of a creative way of getting rid of our teacher or school! The ideas included freezing the school, locking the teacher in a dungeon and turning the teacher into a toad. Mrs Stewart enjoyed reading them and they made her laugh so much 🙂

The Lighthouse Keeper’s Lunch

We have enjoyed our new story ‘The Lighthouse Keeper’s Lunch’.  During story time, we discussed the different ways that the lighthouse keeper could travel from his cottage to the lighthouse.  “It’s way too far for him to swim!” said Cody.  We also thought about some ideas for getting his lunch from the cottage to the lighthouse, without those naughty seagulls eating it!  We enjoyed acting out the story using props.

At the start of the week, we received a letter from our friends in Primary 6!  Our friends had heard all about our topic and wanted to show us the lighthouse models that they had made.   On Friday, Jessica, Becky and Ben brought a lighthouse to class 1.  We listened very carefully as they explained how it was made.  It even had a working light and we were able to learn a little bit about electrical circuits.  After the visit, we were desperate to make our own lighthouses!  We made red and white lighthouses, with a little door and window.   Next week we will add a light and a roof.

We have been thinking about fun activities to do at the seaside and different things to see.  Cody and Joe brought in some lovely shells from their Holidays.  We used the shells during maths to sort into groups of big, small, rough and smooth.   Cody was able to sort the shells onto a four box Carroll diagram!

We looked closely at the shells, noticing different patterns and colours.  We chose our favourite shell and created lovely line drawings for our seaside display.   We learned about creating texture using sponge painting techniques and we used this to create the sand and water for our display.   We also made colourful fish for our display using a range of materials including pencils, sequins, glitter and mosaic tiles to represent the fish scales.   Cody drew a great picture of a Red Snapper fish, which we have added to our wonderful display!   We will upload a picture of our display next week.

Finally, a big congratulations to Cody!  PC Arnott presented Cody with a goody bag for designing a fantastic road safety t-shirt.  Callum was such a great friend to Cody when he heard the news!

Food Fight!

Don’t worry – it wasn’t as messy as it sounds!

P5ms participated in a great game where we had to create a food web which would support our chosen species. We played in teams and had to try and sabotage our opponents species while at the same time keeping our animal population healthy. We found several ways to cut down the population of our opponents. One team hunted for python skin to turn them into handbags while the others began a fur trade which reduced the size of the lion population. How cruel! Both teams were affected when a deadly virus swept the landscape, destroying our food sources.

The game really demonstrated to us how dangerous and exciting the circle of life can be.

Who’s raving about reading this week?

This week at our Reading Rave Kai and Kyra enjoyed reading an e-book. It had lots of interactive features which they think will really help them develop their key skills for reading.

Happy reading Kai and Kyra!

From the Blog Post Box:

Something I am going to put extra effort into next week is...

…the story I am working on with Flyn and Jay. Jack

…practising my 2, 5 and 10 times tables. Ellie

…my handwriting and presentation. Isla

New topic for P2pg

Our new topic is The Three Little Pigs, with the children learning about all different houses and homes.  We started by reading the story and the children were really excited.  They got involved in the story by being the big, bad wolf trying to blow the houses down.  Then we made some of the houses and found how these stood up to the ‘wolf’!  The children have lots of ideas, some of these include making the different areas in the classroom into the three pig’s houses.  Well we’ll give it a go.

The children enjoyed writing the story of The Three Little Pigs in their own words and using lots of adjectives.  Well done to Holly who is our Pupil of the Week for her super Three Little Pigs story.

We also used adjectives, nouns and verbs this week to make some silly sentences, including:

‘The clever pig met a frog in the supermarket.’  Harry.

‘A fat, pink pig thought about his green and white pants.’  Ciaran.

‘A witch fought a fat, angry giant.’ Jack.

‘A pink wolf wanted a bouncy trampoline he could jump on.’ Jennie.

‘The grumpy witch chased the angry wolf.’ Zoe.

Well done P2pg!

Let’s Get Blogging P4l

Hello Everyone

First of all a big well done to Becky Houston who was our class winner for the in school Park Smart t-shirt design competition. Becky created a fabulous design and we were very proud of her  when PC Arnott and Mrs Madden came in to award her with a goodie bag.

Lots going on this week.  In maths we have all been focusing on division and it  has been great to see so many people using their excellent times tables knowledge to help them.  In writing we tried something a bit different and worked with a partner to create a playscript based on a picture.  We were focusing on question making  in reading and watched a short film called the Happy Duckling to practise our prediciting and questioning skills before moving onto working on our group novels.

Now it is over to you at home.  It would be great if people could add to our blog at home.  At some point over the weekend or next week please can you add a comment to our blog.  You click on the box at the top of the post that says responses and type away.  It could be something you have enjoyed in school, something you have learned or something that went really well.  It would be great to see lots of people commenting on our blog.

We look forward to seeing some comments soon.

Bye P4l

What a hectic week for P5a

What a week! We have been very busy this week and a few of us have been busy learning on our own devices!

On Wednesday we were joined by two teachers from Eastertoun Primary, who were very impressed with our use of iPads to support our learning. We learned more about the Earth and created lessons to show to the rest of the class. Here are a few photos of us at work.

In preparation for our Sky Community Games day next week, we created teams and banners. Miss Anderson and Mrs Mackenzie decided to split the classes so half P5ms joined half of P5a in our classroom. Some of us made pompoms.

Miss Anderson and P5a 🙂

P4a

We have been learning about ‘onomatopoeia’ and its use in comics. This is how we ‘hear’ sound on a page, in a book or comic. We have found lots of different ones and have created an art version of onomatopoeia! We have also created ‘frames’ for a comic using our reading books.

In maths we have been learning about time and it is tricky! We are also trying to do our times tables very quickly for Big Maths.

This week we learnt about our heart – the cardiovascular system. We learnt how to take our pulse and then checked it after different activities to see if that made an impact on our heart rate. The more we excercise and run around, the faster our heart beats. We could hear it thumping after running around!

 Have a great weekend

P.S next week we go bowling on Wednesday, so remeber to bring a waterproof jacket. (Just in case it rains!)

New Learning in P1g

What a busy week we have had! We have been learning about the weather. We discussed wind direction and ways to record its movements and made fabulous wind socks. We then experimented with our wind socks out in the playground.

We also were pretending to be illustrators and illustrated our story predictions. We had to draw in the style of the book’s illustrator and make our picture look eye catching and detailed.

Have a lovely weekend!

An outstanding week for P3b!

We have had another excellent week in primary 3! Our art was topic linked and we made a farming picture with moving parts. We were allowed to use anything we wanted and we used our creative skills – said Gemma. Isla said this was the best part of her week.

The best part of the week for many of 3b was our visit to Almond Valley Heritage Centre. We saw and did lots of interesting things like saw pigs, stroked  a cow and touched a goose egg. We learned that a baby turkey is a poult and we know a baby goose is a gosling. We are enjoying our farming topic.

We have learned that there are different kinds of triangles like isosceles, right-angled and equilateral. We talked about lines of symmetry and discovered how many each of these triangles had. We also discovered a parallelogram has no lines of symmetry!

We were all reading and trying to work out words that filled in the blanks but fitted in the story. We have to think carefully about this but we are becoming proficent!

This week’s book recommendations:

Jessie is looking forward to reading Rusty.

Sarah is enjoying Never Kiss Frogs.

Cameron Brown says Rusty is very worth while to read.

Lexis has read a Laura book before and is looking forward to reading another in the series.

Fun at the Farm

Primary three had a brilliant time at Almond Valley Heritage Centre today.  We got to see lots of different animals; the massive pig and donkeys were definite favourites!  We also got to touch a gosling which was only three days old.  Different words used to describe it were; soft, fluffy, bony, tickly and cuddly.  It made lovely cheep cheep noises and we learned a lot about it.  Aaron McNicol asked if it was a boy or girl and interestingly it was too early to tell.  It depends on the shape of the wings and they were too small and fluffy to work it out.

We had fun on the tractor ride and playing in the Adventure Zone with our friends.  Luckily the weather stayed dry so we got to burn off all our energy on the trampolines!

It was a wonderful day out, Primary three would definitely recommend it!

In the Air Rade Shelter.

An Author in Residence

Lewis Gemmell in Primary 5a has had his own book published.  The book called, “The Shrinking Boy” is all about the adventures of a boy who finds himself shrinking.  We are very proud of his achievement.  Lewis commented, “It was great fun writing the book and I hope you all enjoy reading it”.

The book is available to order for £3 with profits going to the school fund.  If you would like to order a copy then please send £3 with your child to Miss Henderson who will order the book for you.  Lewis will personally sign all copies, if requested.

Goldilocks and The Three Bears

Primary 2/1 girls and boys have been reading the story of Goldilocks in class and are looking forward to performing the story at our assembly on Friday 31st of May.  Check school bags for invitations!

For home learning this week children have been asked to think about the story:

  • Do you think Goldilocks should have gone into the cottage?  Why?
  • How did the bears feel when they came home and found someone in their house?
  • Do you think Goldilocks will go into a stranger’s house ever again?

Another busy week!

This week we did many interesting things!

On Tuesday we all took part on ‘building’ our own tent, creating our own space and feeling we have an active role in forming our school environment.

Also we really enjoyed Celebrating Success on Thursday and we were very happy for all our good friends who got a distinction.

And P.E. was fantastic! We run, had fun and worked on coordinating skills!

More news coming next week.
