Happy New Year from P2e

Happy New Year! We all had a great time over the Christmas holidays. We have been working very hard since coming back to school. This week we have been learning all about Scotland. We made our own Scottish flags and weaved our own tartan patterns. We have also been practising some Scottish poems for the Burns poetry competition. Miss Elliot thinks it is going to be very hard to choose a winner!

We have also started rehearsing our class assembly which will be on the 24th of January. We are all excited about our parts in the assembly and are very good at performing our songs.

We look forward to learning more about Scotland over the next few weeks!

Our thoughts:

Evie: “I really enjoyed p.e this week with Mr Jeffires.”

Charlie: “I enjoyed the Big Balbardie Blether today.”

Rachael:”I like learning about money.”

Great Scot!

This week in P3W we have been learning about famous Scots! We have learned a lot about Sir James Young Simpson and Robert Burns.

Samantha – We have been learning about Robert Burns and Sir James Young Simpson in class. Sir James Young Simpson was born in Bathgate! Robert Burns was born in Alloway in Ayr.

Sophie – Sir James Young Simpson was born in 1811 and died in 1870. Robert Burns was born in 1759 and he died in 1796. He was 37 when he died.

Noah – I liked it when we played Auld Lang Syne. This is a song written by Robert Burns and usually played at New Years.

Jennie – Sir James Young Simpson was knighted by the queen! Just like Sir Gary Barlow!! (says Miss Wilson!)

Caitlin – Sir James Young Simpson was famous because he made a medicine called chloroform which helps with pain relief. Robert Burns was famous because he made funny poems.

Tom – Sir James Young Simpson was famous because he invented chloroform and people weren’t sure of the medicine to start with – until Queen Victoria used it when she had her son, Leopold.

Eva – Robert Burns wrote poems like ‘A Red, Red Rose’, ‘Up im the early morning’ and ‘John Anderson, my Jo’. We are all learning these poems in class.

Ty – We have been learning about tartan this week too! We have looked at different types of tartans. Different types of tartans were for different clans. We have been making our own patterns!

Samantha – We’ve been making our own Scotland flags also!

Brooklyn – Something fun we have done today is make our own washing line full of ‘claes’!

All of our ‘claes’ on the washing line are types of clothing that we had to work with partner to figure out the meaning of the Old Scottish word.

Happy New Year from P1m!

We have enjoyed being back at school and everybody has been excited to share all of their holiday news.

We are working hard to learn new sounds and tell the time on digital and analogue clocks.

We have started a new topic all about Mairi Hedderwick’s Katie Morag, which will help us to learn more about the country that we live in.

Today we enjoyed reading about island life in Katie Morag and the New Pier.  We are very glad that Bathgate isn’t quite as stormy as the island of Struay!

We are looking forward to welcoming our parents into the classroom for Shared Start tomorrow.

Merry Christmas!

Many thanks to everyone who joined us at the Bathgate High Church this morning for our Christmas Service, Bells Ring Out.  We were very pleased with how well all of our children did in the church.  They are all Christmas stars!

We would like to wish all of our children, families and friends a very Happy Christmas and all the very best for the New Year.  Have a lovely holiday, everyone.

Miss Henderson & Mr Welsh:)

Two Weeks in P1b

Last week we had our Nativity performances.  We worked extremely hard to learn our lines, sing our songs and remember our actions etc.  We looked super in our costumes and loved performing for our family and friends.

Last Thursday, we went to the theatre to watch the panto Alladin.  We thought it was really good and gave it a big thumbs up.  Isabella liked it when the dragon was hiding from Wishy Washy.  Isaac thought it was funny when the Super heros came out and Ailah said it was scary when the baddie appeared!

This week, in class, we made penguin figures to eat.   We made them with olives, cheese and carrots and used cocktail sticks to hold the peguin in place.  Most of us enjoyed tasting the treats! We also tasted some of the gingerbread house that Jaime-Lee made-it was yummy.

Yesterday we had our Christmas party.  We played games including; pass the parcel, musical bumps, corners and had a dancing competition.  We enjoyed party food and even had a visit from Santa!

Have a lovely Christmas,

P1b

p5d

It’s the last blog of 2013!

We have had a good week in p5d learning about solids, liquids and gasses. We carried out lots of fun experiments. We are now able to identify and categorise solids, liquids and gasses using our knowledge of matter to help us. We did a fun activity where the class split into three groups and each group had to be a solid, liquid or gas and they had to travel around the room in their group. This really helped us to understand the properties of each state.

We made a potion using bicarbonate of soda, water and vinegar. Adding vinegar to bicarbonate of soda causes a chemical reaction to take place and produce carbon dioxide which made the mixture fizz up and over the container.

We had great fun learning in science!

We have finished our class novel, Billionaire Boy and eagerly await the choices for our next novel starting in January 2014.

We have used Christmas as a theme for our symmetry work in maths and everyone agrees it’s much more fun.

Well that’s it for our last week of term. I would like to say a huge thankyou to all the pupils for their hard work and I look forward to hearing all their stories of Christmas when they return in January.

Merry Christmas everyone !!

Mrs D

Festive Fun

We have been having lots of Festive Fun!

At the Christmas Party Santa came to visit us.  We each got a present, Mark received a football themed book which he thought was great….thanks Santa.  Michelle enjoyed getting her dancing shoes on!

Colin enjoyed making his reindeer puppet to sell at the school fayre.  Miss holwill thought we all did an excellent job and didn’t get too m any grey hairs J

We have been busy decorating our classroom.  We were lucky enough to have family and friends come in and visit, together we made robins, reindeers, snowmen or puddings.  They make our classroom look fabulous.  We have also been making lots of crafts.  Robyn liked making an angel…will it appear on the top of her tree next year?  Archie liked making a calendar for next year.  We painted using our hands.  We had a chicken for Spring, a sunflower for Summer, a tree for Autumn and a snowman for Winter….I wonder who will be lucky enough to receive Archie’s calendar as a present?  Aidan enjoyed making his 3d Christmas tree card, I really liked all the stars.  Lewis liked making a Santa character.

We had a very yummy Christmas lunch!

We have even been having Christmas themed French.  We decorated stockings, Gary liked added all the sparkles.  Joyeux Noel everyone!

We had a big treat and went to the panto.  It was Aladin.  Harry thought it was very funny.  Stacey liked it when the genie was freed from his lamp.  We would all like to say a huge well done to Kamron and Zoe who were members of the cast, we are very proud of you both!

We would like to wish you all a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.

We made melting snowman biscuits!

We’ve had a busy final week this term in Primary 3W! We are very excited about the Christmas holidays, but we would like to share with you some of the things we have been learning this week!!

Brooklyn – We made a melting snowman biscuit!

Megan – I liked making the melting snowman biscuits this morning. It was fun to make them.

Jennie – First, we washed our hands. Then we each got a digestive biscuit and a paper towel to put it on.

Sophie – Then we poured a bit of icing onto the biscuit and spread it around the biscuit. The last thing we did was then decorate our biscuits with icing writing tubes!

Noah – I really liked making the melting snowman biscuits.

Ross – It was really fun and I put some icing on its head.

Ty – I think it was really fun because I put eyes on the face and stuck on the marshmallow for its head. I can’t wait to eat mine when I get home!

Festive Fun in P1m

This morning in Primary One we were very busy. A group of children set themselves the challenge of making a paper chain that was taller than them! They succeeded!

All of the children had to listen very carefully to instructions to make a penguin table decoration. They all did very well and our penguins look super.

Miss McAllister and Mrs Mooney would like to wish everyone a Merry Christmas.

P3/2 Party fun!

P3/2 have had lots of fun at the Christmas parties. Everyone looked wonderful in their lovely smart outfits and danced their socks off and even enjoyed a visit from a special person. It was lovely to see all the children so happy and full of fun. Mrs Laidlaw and Mrs Mitchell wish you all a wonderful happy and healthy Christmas. Enjoy the holidays!

Bells Ring Out

We have all been working really hard on learning the songs and parts for our church service, Bells Ring Out and we hope that you will all be able to join us to celebrate the Christmas story on Friday 20th December 2013 at 9.30am in Bathgate High Church.  There’s also a special performance by the pupil/staff choir.  We are sure you will all enjoy the service.

Class 2 Out and About

Class 2 have been learning in different places this week. We were very successful in transferring our learning from Class 2 to new places. On Tuesday Aiden, Dylan and Mrs Clark joined some of the people from Class 3 to learn in the Cafe. Liam was able to share his musical talents with the children in Class 1. On Thursday we joined lots of children from Balbardie at the Regal Theatre and we were a quality audience at the Aladdin pantomime. On Tuesday Caitlin joined Class 2 and 3 for breakfast. Mr Welsh also joined in the meal.

Dylan- I went to my Christmas party in the hall on Monday. I won the corners game. I felt very pleased.

My favourite part in Aladdin was when the police were chasing Wishy Washy and Aladdin.

Aiden- Aladdin was awesome. Wishy Washy went next to Miss Robertson and he thinks she is beautiful.

Cody -At my party on Wednesday I got a present from a special visitor.

Liam- I had music with Mrs Inness. It was good.

Caitlin – I am feeling fine. I am looking forward to returning to school.

P5m Rock!

This week we have been finding out about the different types of rocks. There are three types of rocks – igneous, sedimentary and metamorphic. Sounds tricky but we have our secret weapon to help us remember them – chocolate! The holes in a Crunchie bar remind us of the lava cooling and leaving gas bubbles in igneous rocks. The layers of the Caramel Wafer remind us of the layers of sediment building up in sedimentary rocks. The Curly Wurly (which we held in our hand throughout our Chocolate Geology lesson) reminds us how metamorphic rocks are formed by heat and pressure.
We studied the characteristics found in the different types of rocks and are becoming quite good at identifying them. Many of us have been quite surprised by how interesting rocks can be. A few of us are keen to start building our very own collections.
From the Blog Post Box:

This week I discovered…..

…that there is a rock cycle where rocks can change from one type of rock to another.        Cameron
…how to add Thousands, Hundreds, Tens and Units.       Erin M
…that if I concentrate hard I get my work done quicker.       Craig
…how to recognise the different rocks.      Liam
…that obsidian is an igneous rock.      Robbie

Santa’s Little Helpers

Santa’s Little Helpers

Thank you everyone for completing your home learning.  You drew and listed lots of things that you thought should be included in our Santa’s Workshop!  Now we have a fantastic Santa’s Workshop in class 1.  We can wrap presents, design new toys and build wooden toys!  Cameron’s favourite thing about Santa’s Workshop is everything!  Joe’s favourite thing to do in our workshop is wrapping up presents.

Toys Toys Toys

We have been learning about toys.  This week we went to the Bennie Museum.  At the Bennie Museum we saw lots of old toys.  We saw a rocking horse, a pram, old dolls and old train sets.  We learned about a toy called a boggie, which is a bit like a go-kart, except it is made from wood and you have to pull it with a piece of rope.  Jayden really enjoyed looking at the toy trains.

We sang some songs at the museum and took lots of photographs of the old toys.  Miss Barrie and Miss Cameron are very proud of everyone in class 1.  Everyone listened carefully and took care not to touch the old toys.

Story Time

We enjoy taking turns to read to our classmates at Story Time.  Joe read ‘The Gruffalo’ this week.  He used fantastic expression when he was reading.  Thank you Joe.

Art and Design

We created beautiful Winter scene paintings.  We looked at the colours of the winter sky and selected colours for our paintings.  We used masking tape to make a tree.  We know that trees lose their leaves in Winter, so we used the masking tape to make the tree trunk and branches.  We painted over the masking tape, and when our pictures were dry, we peeled off the tape.  We will upload a picture of our finished work  next week.

I am Brilliant

Everyone in class 1 has an ‘I am Brilliant’ book.  We think, talk and write about the things that we are brilliant at. Sometimes we draw pictures in our books and sometimes we stick photographs in.

‘I am brilliant at wrapping.’ Cameron
