5B

An eventful week in 5B this week and lots of quality learning taking place also.

English

In our language work this week we rewrote our pitch ideas for our Dragons Den inventions. In our writing we focused on using persuasive language to make the Dragons want to invest in our Victorian inventions. It was also important that we listed the key facts such as special features, price and why our product was unique.

Maths

Maths this week we have been continuing our learning on fractions. The Pyramid and Spheres group have been investigating simplifying fractions and how to produce equivalent fractions using multiplication. These groups also completed work for DidBook this week which will be posted soon that shows everything we have learned about fractions.

The Cubes and Cylinders focused on fractions of a whole and how to tell if one fraction is greater than another. The Cubes then started working on their simplifying and equivalent fractions also.

LAC

This week has been a jam packed week of Victorian activities. In class we have created our own versions of William Morris prints.  All of the class produced wonderful examples which will form a display in our classroom. As well as this we have been inundated with entrepreneurs pitching their fantastic Victorian inventions to the Dragons Den. So far only two products have received investment, (Sophie for her Stomach Slimmer and Mya for her sweets that make children behave) however I am sure that lots more budding inventors could get money out of the Dragons next week.

Our Thoughts

Caitlin: I enjoyed the parachute games and dragons den.

Our Victorian inventions are looking good and some pupils have brought in their models already – remember they have to be for next Wednesday!

5B

This has been a busy week in primary 5. We have been practising hard for our assembly; on the 27th in which we will share with you some interesting stories about the Vile Victorians; in maths we have had the pleasure of welcoming in some parents during the PATPAL where primary 5 shared our excellent strategies for the 4 operations and in language we have continued our block on righting instructions and created a ‘The Bedroom Tidier’.

Maths

Thanks for all that came along on Wednesday morning it was good to see so many happy faces and for the pupils to share their learning with you. We hope that you learned something new and that it gives you an insight into how we are learning maths in class. We have continue applying what we have learnt by working hard on our division skills the rest of the week.

English

As mentioned above we continued to write instructions about inventions.  Last week we created teacher pleaser machines and this week we have created bedroom tidiers (this must be useful for most of the class). The writing produced has been fantastic and star writers this week are Ellis, Lotte, Leia and Annabelle.

LAC

Our journey back in time to the Victorian era has led us to learning about the differences between poor and rich children this week. We learned how hard life was for poor Victorian children and how they did not have many toys. Most of us thought that working for a living sounded like a bad idea.  As well as this we have continued to work hard on our assembly and it is starting to sound really good! All pupils who need one have been given a costume and the girls thought they looked a little silly. All pupils should wear dark shoes and sensible clothing to wear under their costume (t shirt and tights for girls, white shirt, polo or t-shirt for boys with dark trousers, hat optional).

Finally…

Primary 5 got the opertuntity to take part in street dance on Wednesday morning below are some pictures of us busting a move!img_1467 img_1468 img_1469 img_1471 img_1472 img_1473 img_1474 img_1475 img_1476 img_1477 img_1478 img_1479 img_1480 img_1481 img_1482

Junior Choir

Just another reminder that choir permission letters need to be returned by this Friday to either Miss Owens or myself.

We are really looking forward to another term of fun with P4 and P5!    If you have any suggestions for choir songs, please let us know and we will try to make them work (even if just for a bit of fun one week!)

Mrs Mansfield

P5A

We have learned this week just how lucky we are to be living just now and not during the Victorian times.  Children then did not have rights and were often put out to work instead of going to school.  Thankfully Queen Victoria’s Government passed some legislation (these are rules) to support children and stop them being sent down mines, and working as chimney sweeps.

In maths we have been learning about division and have been using thinking boards to help us come up with different strategies.

Liam – awesome because it helped us understand the times tables and division.

Sam – thumbs up because it helped me learn different strategies.

Ava – they helped me work out tricky maths problems.

We enjoyed our Big Balbardie Blether this morning which was all about our playground. We came up with lots of ways to make our playground better and are excited about this!

PATPALS is on Wednesday morning for any of you who can make it – don’t forget to return your opinion wheels!

Junior Choir

Another huge well done to the members of the Junior Choir, and another proud moment as teachers for both myself and Miss Owens.

On Thursday we were recorded for West Lothian Council and did a superb job singing in two part harmony for both ‘It was on a Starry Night” and ‘Away in a Manger”.

Remember: Choir is ON after school on Tuesday for the last session of the year – new letters will be issued the first week back informing parents/carers of future rehearsals.

Thank you for your continued support!

Learning in P5B this week

This is the last full week of school before the man with the sleigh and reindeers comes to visit us. We have had a very busy week with our party, Christmas lunch and Breakfast with Santa for some of us.

Despite all this though we have still managed to work incredibly hard. In maths we completed our work on Data Handling by looking at how to read information from different types of charts. In English we have looked at parenthesis using brackets and written fantastic stories about ‘Sprout Boy’ and in our context for learning ‘The Caribbean Island’ we completed our model islands and investigated how Christmas is celebrated throughout the Caribbean. It was interesting to see how something were the same as us and others were different.

As well as this Mr Cunningham set us a challenges using infinity tiles to test our growth mindset and ability to get out of the ‘Dip’. It was good to see how some pupils have improved their growth mindset and how others still need to take some time and effort to grow their mind when they are faced with a challenge.

P5A

We have had a lovely week with lots of fun learning going on. We started making papier mache Caribbean Islands and what a fabulous mess we made!  At one point we couldn’t see our carpet for the newspaper on the floor! We loved putting our hands in the gloop and making our islands smooth.  Once the balloons have dried out we are going to pop and cut them then we can start creating our dream island.

We have also been busy with our assembly which is all about Christmas traditions. We have some amazing facts to share and some good old singing too.  Our Assembly is on the 9th December at 9.15 and is the hottest Christmas show in town! Everyone is welcome and you can even have a wee cuppa after it with us.

P5a

We had a very adventurous week!  For our writing we got stranded on a deserted caribbean island and found a treasure chest.  We are busy writing about and cant wait to share them with you on didbook.

We are trying hard to learn out times tables and really need your help!  The next time we are in the car can you test us?  We have agreed that we need to learn them and every opportunity is a learning one – so please help us!

We finished off the week getting into the Christmas spirit by preparing for our Christmas enterprise – which we hope you will enjoy at the Fayre.

Have a good weekend!

P5a

We are having great fun learning about the Caribbean Islands and this week we learned about the different climates and landscapes.  We are also progressing with our leaflets and are looking forward to bringing them home and sharing them with everyone.

We played very well and won lots of games at our Handball Festival – we really enjoyed it and would like to say a big thanks to Active Schools for inviting us.  we learned lots of new skills and developed our team work.

A big well done to everyone who receive golden club stickers this week – we are all aiming to get into the golden club event at Christmas.

P5A

In P5a this week w e have been learning our times tables. We have been playing lots of different games and singing lots of songs to try and remember them.

We also started off our virtual trip to the Caribbean!  We have learned where the islands are, what their climate is like and started our research for our leaflets – did you know the Bahamas national creature is the Flamingo? Cuba has Tarantulas? That Jamaica’s national anthem is called ‘Land We Love?  Or that Jamaica uses Dollars as their currency? Yip we have been busy!!

We have been learning about Handball as we have a Handball Tournament next Tuesday – this is our first time and we are all excited about it!
