Primary 6 Snow Day Activities

In the event of a school closure due to snow or other unforeseen circumstances, below are a range of activities you and your child could engage in at home to consolidate previous learning:

Literacy

Reading: Pick a movie or factual programme from the television. Complete our classroom activities on this programme. 

  • Prior Knowledge – What do I already know (before you watch)?
  • Visualisation – What picture is in my mind when I read?
  • Metalinguistic – Note down any tricky words, then look up the meaning online/in a dictionary.
  • Inference – Draw conclusions/make predictions/reflect.
  • Main Ideas – Finding the thread throughout the text.
  • Summarising – Gather the main ideas in your own words.

Spelling:

  1. Using your weekly spelling words, carry out an active spelling strategy such as:
  • Pyramid writing
  • Alphabetical order
  • Rainbow writing
  • Coloured vowels
  • Write a silly story using all of your spelling words.
  • If you’re really brave go outside and write them in the snow!!!

Your spelling words are updated in your Google Classroom each week. If you do not have access to these do Sumdog Spelling. 

Writing:

    • Write a biography about someone you know or someone famous
    • Write a recount of a special day or the day you have just had in the snow – Remember to write in past tense, in order and try to add in those sequential words!
    • Make up a silly story with your spelling words

Numeracy

  • Log into Sumdog and play 30 minutes of a maths game of your choice.

  • Write out your times tables – ask someone at home to test you.
  • Create your own maths themed game in the style of a classic game (e.g. snakes and ladders with multiplication questions or snap)
