Active Literacy – Reading

Woodpark Primary has introduced a style of reading that supports your child from their very first attempt at letter recognition all the way through to reading complex novels.

Sometimes a child can be an excellent reader but not necessarily understand everything they have read. This approach targets not just your child’s ability to read but also their understanding of what they read.

This year your child has been tested on a variety of factors and every child in the school has now been placed on the International Book Banding scale (more info in ‘Where is my child?‘). This scale will carry your child through their reading journey from Primary 1 up to Primary 7 and beyond, all the time giving them exactly the support and challenge they need at their stage of development.

Alongside this, the school has recently invested heavily in our resources and we now have a collection of over 5000 books, each one ‘banded’ to be perfectly appropriate to your child’s current reading and comprehension ability. We are no longer tied to a particular book scheme, but instead we have collections from hundreds of authors from David Walliams to Michael Morpurgo.

We are very grateful for all the work you do at home with your children in helping them on their reading journey as it makes a huge difference to their learning and retention!
