Primary 1

Primary 1 are enjoying their new school environment and learning new things. Keep an eye on our school Twitter feed to see some of the exciting learning experiences we have in Primary 1.

In our class we are lucky to have lots of adults here to help us on a daily basis: Mrs Finlay, Ms Hunt, Mrs Taylor (Thursday only) and Mrs Neilson.

This term (August – December) we will be exploring:

In literacy…

  • Beginning to identify and generate rhymes through exploring different nursery rhymes and rhyming stories
  • Developing our ability to read, write and use the phonemes we have learned. We will focus on:  s, a, t, i, p, n, c, k , e, r, m, d, g, o, u, l, f  and b.
  • Beginning to use the phonemes above to build VC (vowel-consonant words e.g. in) and CVC (consonant- vowel – consonant words e.g. cat) with our magnetic boards.
  • Beginning to use the phonemes above by blending them together to read and identify new words. (Please access the Active Literacy section of our website for more information about blending and word building)
  • Sharing our likes and dislikes of different stories
  • Using our drawings to share our own experiences and tall our own stories

In Numeracy…

  • Begin to develop our confidence in reading, sequencing, ordering and using numbers within 10
  • Begin to learn strategies to help us add quantities together
  • Develop our mental methods to solve addition problems such as counting on
  • Exploring 2D shape, pattern & symmetry
  • Exploring some basic data handling

In Social Studies…

This term we are exploring different people who help us and will be learning about the different seasons and exploring our local areas through our Percy the Park Keeper topic.

Other information:

  • Gym days: Tuesday and Wednesday
  • Homework is set on a Monday and due to be returned on a Friday morning.
  • Stay, Play and Learn – all parents/carers are invited to join your child at weekly Stay, Play and Learn sessions. Please let us know if we should expect you in the homework diary. These sessions are held every Tuesday 1:30-3:30pm , the last session will be Tuesday 15th November.
  • Please send homelink folders to school with your child each day.
