Primary 1 Snow Day Activities

Literacy

  • Letter formation – have a go at writing the sounds we have learned in the snow
  • Letter hunt – have a look around the house for items that begin with each sound
  • Draw and write – choose a letter and draw 4 things that begin with this sound
  • CVC word making – make flashcards of your sounds and have a go at making words which you can blend eg: cat, rat, mat, hat, pen, ten, hen.
  • Watch a Bedtime Story: https://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episodes/b00jdlm2/cbeebies-bedtime-stories
  • Read a story with someone at home, can you guess what the story might be about by looking at the front cover? Can you find any words you know in the story?
  • Common words challenge – Use materials in the house such as pasta, shaving foam, play-doh, flour or pencils to practise these.
  • Draw a picture of your ‘Snow Day.’ You could even try to write a sentence underneath.

Numeracy

  • Write your numbers in the snow – use your finger or a stick if your hands are too chilly!
  • Practise counting, matching and ordering: https://www.topmarks.co.uk/learning-to-count/gingerbread-man-game
  • Make a number line to 10.
  • Make 10 – use objects around the house to mix and match bundles to 10 eg: 10 pegs, 10 shoes, 10 forks, etc. Have a go at writing/making these sums eg: 5 +5 = 10
  •  2D Shape Hunt: Can you find items in your house that are the shape of a circle, square, rectangle, triangle, oval, pentagon or hexagon? Can you make a list of these items?

Other activities

  • Build a model using Lego or junk and take a picture of it to share with your class on Google Classroom.
  • Make a cake or prepare lunch with an adult in your house and talk about the process.

The activities above are free choice, pick and choose which activities you would like to do but make sure you have fun and play in the snow!!!
