Online Safety

As we head into the long weekend, we would urge all parents and carers to remain aware of online activity among your children. Online learning has massively increased the use of cameras – in particular your child’s ability to use them. With this inevitably comes risks and dangers from people taking advantage of the situation.

There is a TikTok viral going around today encouraging children to visit the website omegle.com

This is a website where anyone is randomly matched to someone else and they are instantly connected via webcam. This of course is dangerous and could easily expose your children to the worst of the internet, so please remain vigilant.

We would strongly encourage everyone to use the long weekend to –

  1. Speak to the children about remaining safe online
  2. Review your parental settings on your wifi/devices
  3. Check in with your child’s device in terms of apps and people they have ‘added’ on these apps.

In school we always state if they do not physically know the person, they should not be their contact in an app and should not be able to contact them.

Jotter Collections

A reminder that tomorrow and Thursday (3rd & 4th of February) we invite you to attend the school if your child is running low on space and needs any new jotters to support their online learning.

Time slots for jotter collection on these days are between 10-11am and 1-2pm. Please attend the main school office and observe social distancing.

Primary 7 Transition

In the Primary 7 Google Classroom today they will find a form asking if they have any questions whatsoever about heading up to high school. On the form there is also a section for parents/carers to ask any questions.

This is a great chance to find out anything that may be on your mind. The forms will be sent back to LHS next Friday, so if you could make sure your child ‘hands in’ the form on Google Classroom before 10am next Friday (5th February) it would be appreciated.

You can also visit the high school transition page by clicking this link.

Emergency Childcare Provision Monday 8th February – Wednesday 10th February

The offer of emergency childcare provision will be reinstated across the mid-February holiday and In-service day – Monday 8th, Tuesday 9th and Wednesday 10th February. This provision will be a similar model to the previous summer emergency childcare hubs and will operate in a small number of establishments across South Lanarkshire. Opening hours and the details of locations as well as the enrolment form are included in the information below. Please note transport will not be provided. The deadline for applications is Monday 1st February 9.30am and notifications will be given by close of business on Thursday 4th February – all allocations are centrally granted.

15 January 2021 Newsletter

Dear Parents/Carers

I wish you all a Happy New Year, even though this is, of course, a very different start to the year than we would have hoped for.

I am delighted to see so many of our children have engaged with learning through our Google Classrooms as they returned to ‘school’ this week, and I thank you for the support you are giving your children. We realise how challenging it can be to balance home life, work and remote learning so we are very grateful for all you are doing, thank you! You can contact us on our dedicated email address wp@glow.sch.uk if you are having any difficulties accessing Google Classroom.  Our website also has information to help you.  Almost all of the resource packs have now been collected – thank you!

We will hold a weekly Google Meet assembly on a Friday, and at times teachers may organise Google Meets with their class.  Please take time to read the document ‘Video Conferencing for Learners and Parents’ – you can find this on our website and the school app.  Please ensure your child is aware of the guidance within this.

Chromebooks and tablets were distributed earlier this session to help families with remote learning, as well as dongles giving internet access.  If you do not have the equipment you need to enable your child to access Google Classrooms please contact the school as soon as possible, thank you.

We will continue to track pupil engagement with online learning each week and from next week will be in touch with parents of children who have not engaged regularly to see how we can help support you and your child to participate in online learning.  During this period of remote learning we will continue to progress children’s learning, aspiring to provide an experience as close to a school day as is possible.  It is not a period of revision or consolidation of work, so it is really important that children participate daily.

Look out for a parent/carer survey coming soon to seek your views on our remote learning offer. We welcome your feedback to identify areas for improvement.

The closing date for deferred entry applications is 31st January 2021. You should still enrol your child for P1 even if applying for deferment.

A high volume of applications is expected so please be patient and continue to try to complete the online form should it not be successful on the first occasion.

Thereafter the school will be in touch to discuss your P1 registration application.
