On Wednesday 26th November 2025, Provisionally Registered Teachers (PRTs) took part in an Outdoor Learning professional learning session at Chatelherault Country Park—the first time we have delivered this type of training. The event was led by Gillian Reilly, SLC STEM and LfS Development Officer, supported by colleagues from the development team, with an additional workshop delivered by Emma Brown from Learning Through Landscapes.
Throughout the session, teachers engaged in a range of practical outdoor workshops, including loose parts play, outdoor literacy, outdoor numeracy, seasonal science, and health and wellbeing. They were also introduced to the concept of a “grab box”—a small collection of everyday materials that can be used to support simple, effective outdoor activities with minimal planning.
Despite the less-than-perfect weather, it provided a useful reminder that outdoor learning is an all-year-round approach, and can be successfully delivered in a variety of conditions. Feedback from the PRTs was very positive, with many commenting that they left with practical ideas and activities they felt confident to implement immediately in their own classrooms.
