A SUMMARY OF THE DAY SO FAR

  • A draft of the COP26 negotiation outcome has been published overnight. Although the reaction has been largely negative, but there are some areas where progress has been made.
  • On transport day, protesters have been pushing for better public transport and a greater focus on sustainable transport modes, such as cycling and walking.

  • A new poll has found that concern for the environment among the UK public has hit an all time high with more than 40% of the UK population putting it in their top three issues facing the country.

  • UK PM Boris Johnson has arrived in Glasgow ahead of his speech at 4:30pm.

  • More than 40 countries are dedicated to move away from coal – however the worlds biggest users like the USA and China did not sign up.

  • PM Boris Johnson said “Negotiating teams are doing the hard yards in these final days of COP26 to turn promises into action on climate change. There’s still much to do”.

  • The document also calls on countries to speed up their transition out of using coal, however there is no clear dates for when this should be achieved.
  • Despite the promises made at COP26, the planet is still heading for 2.4C of warming- according to a Climate Action Tracker.

  • Scientists have warned that keeping temperature rises to 1.5C requires global emissions to be cut by 45% by 2030 and to zero overall by mid-century.

  • A first draft of an agreement setting out how countries will cut emissions to avoid temperature rises above 1.5C has been published.
  • The document says meeting the goal to limit global warming to 1.5C needs meaningful and effective action in “this critical decade”
