What Is Being Vegan And How Does It Affect Climate Change?
By Emma Ballantyne
Vegans are people who have an entirely plant based diet, meaning that they do not eat any products which are made from, or have come, from animals.
This includes meat, poultry, fish, dairy and eggs. There are plenty of good foods left that they can eat though!
Many people are vegan because they have a love for animals and don’t want to harm them. However, veganism has many other benefits, especially for the environment.
Eating a vegan diet can reduce your carbon footprint by 50%, meaning the amount of greenhouse gases that are produced by your actions are halved.
Not consuming animal products will help stop deforestation, pollution, and animal extinction.
We interviewed a few people who were out to promote veganism and this is what they had to say:
-
Going vegan is the ‘single biggest thing’ you can do for the planet (University of Oxford study)
-
Anything is better than nothing, even cutting out some foods or only eating things on some days, every step towards it makes a difference
Overall, going vegan is a simple lifestyle change that you can make, but it will have a big positive impact on the planet.
