COP26 LIVE BLOG – 1st November
13:25-13:35- The Prime Minister of Jamaica, Mia Mottley’s speech.
- We need to make a choice whether we truly want to make a change.
- Why is it that 1/3 of the world prospers, while the rest do not?
- Richest countries engaged in 25 trillion dollars of spending and 9 trillion of that was recent for COVID. Why can’t they be that urgent with climate change?
- They need 500 billion dollars a year for 20 years.
13:15-13:25- David Attenborough’s speech.
- The fact that the people affected by climate change are young people should inspire change.
- Nature is a key ally: when we restore nature, we reduce carbon dioxide.
- The people alive now, and the generations to come, will look back on COP26 and see what’s to come.
13:00-13:15- The Speech of His Royal Highness, Charles The Prince of Wales.
- Climate change is a global emergency and can have a greater impact than COVID-19.
- Growing population is posing ever greater threats.
- We are running out of time. We must come together, countries must come together.
- The private sector could be a crucial asset in successful progress.
- Priority should be major investments in green energy in order to move away from coal.
- Agreement is key, common goals to ensure countries stick to targets.
- All forms of industry must change.
- All world leaders must help in the fight to end climate change in order to ensure the lives of future generations
12:45-13:00 – The Speech of The Secretary General of the UN, Antonio Guterres.
- We must stop climate change before it stops us.
- We aren’t on track to success. At the current rate, even if the best case scenario happens, we will still rise above 2 degrees.
- Everyone must contribute. We know what we must do. We must reduce carbon emissions by 45% by 2030.
- If commitments fall short after COP26, countries must revisit their plans every year.
- Developing countries need finance urgently. 100 billion dollars climate finance must be a reality.
- We must listen, act and choose ambition, choose solidarity, choose to safe guard humanity and the future.
12:35-12:45 – The Prime Minister of the UK, Boris Johnson’s speech.
- Keep the average global temperature at maximum 1.5 degrees.
- He wants to help fund developing countries to help get closer to greener solutions.
- End of use of coal and end of deforestation in richer countries 2030 and in developing countries 2040.
- The technology is there, we have the resources we need to fix this problem.
- We are “one minute to midnight. We are already close to the tipping point, the problems will just keep getting worse. If we do not act now, future generations will suffer the consequences.”
- This needs to be the start of a new era and not the beginning of the end.
