What Is COP26?

What does COP26 mean?

COP26 is a climate change meeting taking place in Glasgow, Scotland.

This is where world leaders such as Joe Biden, Boris Johnson and Emmanuel Macron will meet to talk about our climate and what we need to change to make ourselves more sustainable.

This is important because as a world we should be trying to prevent as much damaging climate change as possible. The world needs to stop using harmful fossil fuels and move towards better ways of eco-friendly living.

The event will take place from October 31st until November 12th in the SEC Hydro in Glasgow. This conference is the first time that parties will be expected to commit to big changes since COP21.

COP26 was supposed to take place in November 2020 but was postponed because of COVID-19. Due to COP26 being postponed, a lot more will be discussed at this year’s event than previously planned.

But what do all these words mean?

Sustainability : When spoken about with the topic of climate change, this means to leave enough resources for the future generations (You!) to live life near enough the same as ours.

Renewable Energy : Is a source of energy that doesn’t run out after being used, or runs out very, very, very slowly. For example, solar panels that you might see on your neighbour’s house or big wind turbines that you see everywhere are good examples of renewable energy sources.

COP26 : This stands for ‘Conference of the Parties’ and the 26 stands for the number of years it has gone on for, meaning that COP started all the way back in 1995 in Berlin, Germany.
