Belgian band

This weekend it is the Shetland folk festival. One of the bands performing came to the Tingwall Hall to perform for the school and Little Tikes. The band were from Belgium and were called WOR. They spoke Dutch. One of them played saxophone, one of them played fiddle, one of them played guitar, one of them played Flemish bagpipes and one  of  them  played accordion. They played some songs for us then they taught us some Dutch. Dutch is quite similar to English. Hello is Hallo and taxi is just taxi. After that we got to ask them questions. Me and Ashleigh got  to give them a present. I enjoyed it.P1010340P1010347P1010334

Folk Festival

It is the folk festival this weekend in Shetland. We were lucky to have a band from Belgium come to the Tingwall hall to play to us. They are called WÖR and are a quintet. Fabio Di Meo was on saxophone, Pieterjan Van Kerckhoven on the Flemish bagpipes, Oscar Beerten on fiddle, Bert Ruymbeek on accordion and Ward Dhoore on guitar.

They played a short and lively before interacting with the classes and providing them with information about Belgium. Di Meo taught the children a few words in Dutch. Hello is Hallo, thank you is dank je, he told them it is a really easy language to learn, taxi is just taxi.

We learnt that the saxophone, chocolate and fries (apparently) were invented in Belgium!

They also had us up on our feet dancing – we had to clap our hands and stamp our feet along with the music. We also got to sing along with one song.

They were very nice and funny too. We showed our appreciation by giving them cards we made and a few gifts from Shetland. They were very kind and gave us a CD of theirs.

We really enjoyed it, they were great to listen to.

Instrumental Concert

We had an instrumental concert this morning. The whole school gathered in the dinning hall to hear them.  There were a lot of pupils from P5-7 performing songs for us, there were a lot of Christmas songs that we could sing along with. There were people playing the fiddles, a flute, a recorder, the piano and the guitar.

They all did a fantastic job of performing in front of the whole school! Well done to everyone who took part.

Art, Music and P.E

We had Art with Mrs Hoseason on Thursday. First we were looking at other people’s  work from different schools. Then we were doing Mind Maps about Myths and Legends because Mrs Hoseason wanted to see what we knew. Our Mind Maps had to be very colourful and exciting. I did a lot on my one and I think it was quite good. We also had Music with Mr Bennett on Thursday. We sang a song  and then we played Categories.  Categories is a game. I like playing Categories. After that Mr Bennett let us get the xylophones out. We played One Man went to Mow on the xylophones and then Merrily We Roll Along. On Monday we had PE with Mr McNiven. We were using bats and balls and we had to try and bounce the balls on the bats.

Miss Nicholson’s Accordion

Miss Nicholson took in her accordion for us to see today. She let us have a go and even played a couple of tunes for us. We really enjoyed this and clapped for her. Some of us had never seen one before so we were excited to have a go ourselves. We asked to have another shot at golden time and primary 6 even came to see what the noise was about and had a go. We know where the ‘C’ button is on the bass as it feels funny. The accordion can make funny noises and can be very loud!
