Myths Around the World

Primary 4/5 have been very busy this past few weeks researching myths and legends around the world. Once they gathered all of their research they created a presentation. They had the choice of how they wished to present their information – most groups chose Power Point, although there were a few groups that chose to have a poster alongside their Power Point. We looked at presentation skills before they presented their work to the rest of the class. There were lots of questions asked after each presentation which sparked great discussion within the class.  A lot of hard work was put into their presentation and it showed! Well done P4/5!

Kanchana’s Imaginative Story!

One sunny morning I woke up in my lovely cottage. I was walking to the kitchen but before I reached it I saw a door I had never seen before. I was curious so I opened it and behind it was the beach. It was so sunny, the sea was looking yellow.I went along the sand and I found a cave. Inside it was pitch black and then suddenly the cave lit up and I could see a woman. She had a long black dress trailing behind her, black and red sparkly shoes, a glowing staff, a black crown with particles floating around it and burning red eyes. She said her name was Cerca. She laughed an evil laugh and asked me what my name was and I said “Kanchana”. She came closer to me and very weirdly touched me and I fell into a porthole but just as I was going to go down in to it I heard Cerca saying “good luck in the time of myths and legends, ha ha ha”. I wondered what she meant because it looked like I was going to find out. At first it looked like I was in a desert but it turned out to be an arena. and I heard someone saying “little girl verses Hercules” and I was l was like “what or more like when”. Now I know what Cerca time of myth and legends because that’s what this place is, a place where myths and legends LIVE! I still have to battle Hercules. I heard he killed a three headed dog! I thought about weapons to kill him and it came to life. I had a shield as gold as all the riches in the world. I had a sword that looked as sharp as a machete. I used it like a dart and it cut right through his head, it was disgusting sight, blood spread everywhere. then I had to keep teleporting to different placesand having to defeat different myths and legends like medusa, pegasus and even a cyclops. the last teleport place was at a dark forest and there, on  the top of a rock stood cerca and next to her was a person that I regonized. It was a friend from school but there was something different about her. She had BUTTERFLY WINGS!  I said “hi” to Emily. Emily flew to me and said she was half butterfly-half human! It was a big shock. Cerca said the only way to go home was if I killed her. So I thought of a boy and Cerca burst into flames. Emily asked how I knew to do that? I said because girls in my class hate boys. THE END! Teacher that’s what I did this weekend!

Myths and Legends around the world

Today we got into groups of 3 and 4 to begin researching different myths and legends around the world. We are gong to present our findings to the rest of the class next week. Each group was given a different country to look at and we have to find at least 3 different myths/legends that belong to that country. We decided in our groups how we were going to present our findings, most of the groups decided to make Power-points but there are a few posters being made. We have been looking through books and searching the internet to find our information. We discussed copyright and now know how to narrow our search on Google images to know which photos we can use and which ones we cannot.

Tingwall Times

We have been looking at newspapers and the features of a newspaper during literacy. We learned about:

  • Headlines,
  • Orientation,
  • Pictures and captions
  • The main text – has paragraphs, written in past tense and in columns
  • Reorientation

After spending time looking through newspapers and identifying the different features we planned our own newspaper reports. First we had to agree on a name for our newspaper! We came up with lots of ideas to begin with, before having a secret vote to decide on one. We all closed our eyes and put our hand up for which name we wanted. Tingwall Times was the winner!

Our report was about a Mythological creature being spotted in Tingwall/Shetland, we got to choose which creature we wanted to write about. Then after we had written our plan Miss Nicholson showed us how to use Microsoft Word to write a newspaper, using columns, adding a heading, making the font bold and adding a box for our picture and caption. Half the class used the laptops to type their reports whilst the other half wrote them on paper. We are creating a front cover for our Tingwall Times just now.

Topic – Legends

Along with the mythological creatures we read and discussed these legends as a class;

  • Pandoras box,
  • Theseus and the Minotaur,
  • Hercules,
  • King Midas,
  • Romulus and Remus,
  • Orpheus and Eurydice,
  • The story of Annigan – We created our own myth as to why there are different moon phases after reading this.
  • The Hero Twins and Atalanta and the Wild Boar – We created our own heroes/heroines after reading these legends. We thought about a name, their special skills, any weaknesses, a quest they had to go on and any difficult tasks they had to perform. Some of us drew a picture of what we thought our Hero/Heroine would look like.

Mythological Creatures

Our topic this term is Myths and Legends.

We paired up and researched mythological creatures using different sources (books and the internet – although some pairs couldn’t find any information they were looking for in the books) The creatures we researched/discussed were:

  • gorgon
  • Cyclops
  • Phoenix
  • Trolls
  • Hydra
  • Griffon
  • Quetzacoatl
  • Medusa
  • Minotaur
  • Cerberus
  • Scylla
  • Harpies
  • Chimaera
  • Mermaids
  • Fairies
  • Leprechauns

After looking at all the different creatures and what they looked like, special features and weaknesses, we created our own. We drew a picture of what they looked like and wrote a little bit about them. They are currently on our wall for all to see.
