Term 4 Week 1

🌟 Primary 3/4 Weekly Round-Up – Term 4, Week One

✏️ Literacy

This week in literacy, we have been focusing on grammar, specifically proper and common nouns, and continuing to build our understanding of how these are used in our writing.

In comprehension, we began using Ninja Comprehension, with a focus on sequencing skills, helping us to order events clearly and understand the structure of texts.

Our writing focus this week has been introduced through a mysterious magical door that appeared in our classroom! The children have been full of excitement, imagining where the door could lead and what might be behind it. We have linked this to the Global Goals, encouraging the children to think about different places in the world and how we can help people and protect our planet. This has led to some very creative ideas and discussions, which we will continue to develop in our writing.

We have also continued working with the Highland Literacy approach to spelling, focusing on syllables, rhyme, parts of speech, prefixes and suffixes. This week we introduced Sumdog spelling practice, as well as more targeted worksheets, to support and challenge the children in their learning. The children can also continue practising their spelling on Sumdog at home as part of their homework, helping to reinforce what we have been learning in class.

🔢 Maths

In maths, we have continued our work on column subtraction, building on our previous learning and developing confidence in setting out our calculations clearly.

We also introduced fractions using practical resources such as pom-poms in bags to explore different parts of a whole. The children learned about numerators and denominators and began to understand where fractions are used in real-life contexts.

💻 ICT

This week in ICT, we learned about safe searching online and how to use key words effectively when researching information. Each child chose a topic to research and used Kiddle to create their own research paper. These will be used to create PowerPoint presentations, which the children will share with the class.

🌍 Topic – Building a Business

We have started our new topic, “Building a Business Together.” Firstly, we started looking at hygiene and our baking skills by making chocolate crispies. We discussed the difference in making it for ourselves and the extra steps required for making for others or to sell.

We also discussed what we already know about cafés and shared our ideas as a class. We created a class mind map titled “What do we need for a café?”, thinking about elements such as food, drinks, staff, menus, money, customers and safety.

They all came up with some amazing ideas and I think they are all future business entrepreneurs!

🚢 Wider Learning

As part of our wider learning, Mrs Smith led a session on the anniversary of the Titanic sinking. The children explored Morse code and created detailed drawings of the Titanic, linking history with creativity.

🎨 Play Projects

Our play project this week was inspired by the Titanic, linking to our wider learning. The children showed fantastic creativity, creating:

  • Games and quizzes
  • PowerPoints and digital images
  • Spot the difference activities
  • Junk models and block constructions of the Titanic

It was wonderful to see the children working collaboratively, sharing ideas, and applying their learning through play.

🎨 Wider Life of the School

We have also been busy creating a bright and welcoming classroom door display to start the new term. The display is based on crayons, representing a colourful and positive term ahead.

Each child designed their own unique crayon, including a self-portrait and their own personal goals for the term. This has helped set a positive tone for the term and encouraged the children to think about what they would like to achieve.
