Term 4 Week 8

🌟 Primary 3/4 Weekly Round-Up – Term 4, Week Eight

✏️ Literacy

This week, our spelling focus was the ‘ou’ sound, and in grammar we explored contractions. The children enjoyed working with partners to identify and create contractions before building their own contraction bricks using Lego and word cards. This practical approach helped reinforce how two words can be combined to make a contraction.

Our Magical Door adventure continued as we travelled to Future World, linking to Global Goal 7: Affordable and Clean Energy. The children imagined meeting Aila, a child from the future, and wrote conversations between Aila and a planet protector, discussing energy challenges and possible solutions. This gave the children a chance to apply both their speech mark and contraction skills in meaningful writing.

To complement this learning, we created shoebox worlds. Using small wooden doors, the children designed and decorated magical entrances before creating a world inside their shoebox. Some chose worlds we had already discovered through the magical door, while others invented entirely new worlds of their own.

🔢 Maths

This week our maths learning took the form of a Dragon Academy, with a different challenge each day!

On Monday, the children became Dragon Potion Masters, learning about volume and capacity by carefully measuring ingredients to create a range of dragon potions. After successfully completing five potions, they earned their very own Potion Master Certificate. There was great excitement as we mixed colourful potions while learning to measure accurately.

Tuesday’s Dragon Academy focused on measure. The children explored grams, kilograms, length and size through a variety of dragon-themed activities. They created dragon eggs from Play-Doh to specific measurements, measured dragon tails, and worked out the sizes of objects needed for a dragon habitat.

On Wednesday, we introduced division through an edible maths lesson. The children practised sharing sweets equally into groups and quickly discovered that division can be both fun and tasty!

On Friday, we combined maths with teacher-led PE during our Frog Olympics. Using clicker frogs, we investigated distance and measurement by comparing how far the frogs could jump and then measuring whether we could jump further ourselves.

🌍 Topic – Building a Business

This week, we worked alongside Primary 1/2 as part of our café enterprise project. The children took part in café interviews, discussing the different roles available and helping allocate jobs across the various café teams.

This was a fantastic opportunity to practise communication, teamwork, confidence and decision-making skills while continuing to develop our understanding of how a business operates. The children showed great maturity when discussing which roles would best suit their skills and interests.

🌱 Wider Learning

This week also marked our final visit to the polytunnel, with the last group enjoying the opportunity to help with planting and visit the animals. The children have thoroughly enjoyed taking part in these sessions over the past few weeks and have learned a great deal about growing plants and caring for living things.

It has been another busy and creative week, filled with dragons, future worlds, enterprise activities and plenty of practical learning!
